Damn the news about Guru sucks. Anyway, who's looking forward to the Nas/Damian Marley release? I think it's going to be a kick in the face. The most recent rap album that I really loved was Kid Cudi - "Man on the Moon - The End of Day". I have a new list. Masta Ace Common Eminem Nas Lupe Fiasco Ghostface Killah (just got into Supreme Clientele, it's some hot shit) MF DOOM (ill and underrated) Slug Andre 3000 Black Thought My ten favorite rhymesayers right now. Hell yeah. (Mar 19, 2010 | post #3179)
Nas Eminem Lupe Fiasco Immortal Technique Aesop Rock Slug Mos Def Jay-Z, Kanye, T.I., and Wayne are on point sometimes but simply aren't on the same level as these cats. (Feb 27, 2010 | post #3162)
GZA is a titan. Too bad his new shit is not on par with his prime material. (Feb 27, 2010 | post #63)
Let me introduce by saying that I noticed your rap And they way that you've been breaking your back To give us all a sample of your flavor of the week Sorry man, but your future in music's looking bleak If I go too aggressive on ou, you'll become a stain on the floor in the basement of the House of Pain This game is my domain, I mark it territorily There's one of you, there's 64 of me Why'd I pick that number? Cuz my lyrics are that colorful Like a Nintendo, with a brain smothered in endo Making, every single action of mine wonderful You can keep the lyrics as a lasting memento (Feb 13, 2010 | post #6283)
You guys are camping on the mic, so pack your bags and stand aside I'll demostrate the best method to handle it right Long ago a wordsmith was a wizard, now he is a joke Halfway through a mighty statement, you just admit you're broke You're beat, you're burned out, let's see how this cheetah's run will turn out There's many ways to skin a cat, you wanna learn how? First of all, put away the oversized machete You're overcompensating, people know you can't hold it steady Secondly...just get the hell out of my way Rapping is a sacrament for me, not all naivete Like it is for the rest that I address You should be arrested cuz I copped and was not impressed I bet you didn't catch that, the sun was in your eyes Like Japanese, you never deliver but always advertise And if you think I'm talking to someone else, get your sights adjusted I'm calling your ass out, so you better tell your husband (Feb 12, 2010 | post #6259)
Joseph Campbell style, rock the mic, and yes it's been a while But you can't escape bondage to a game that raised you wild Thus, I get grittier than nihilism Or pimps that slap other pimps, and not just their bitches The truth of why it's been a while, I'm spending time learning to fly Up into the mountains, I'm the lone samurai Now I've come back down, with Ten mandates I've learned the art of self-discipline, and now I stand straight People say they're ill But is it cuz they love the music? Or because they run around living out a poor illusion? It's likely just their conscience that is eating at their soul So yeah, they're ill because they touch someone else's mic and catch a cold I know I probably seem bold, but hell I feel bold I want to transmutate water into wine into gold Into something even more valuable, that's love I bet I'm sounding preachy but we've gotta get above The tantalizing bullshit, the televised America Bring it on, I'll show you hell you've never been aware of I take the risk of saying rhymes that are susceptible But shit, I made the effort, so for that, I feel incredible What gives you backseat drivers the right to be so skeptical? If you say a word to me, I'll rule it unacceptable And go judicial on your ass Shoot my pistol, make you dance, and laugh And then I'll kick back, but when I relax, it doesn't last I live by what I say, some day, I'll die by what I know My enemies are destined for a circle of Inferno Inside my land of milk and honey, money's all that curdles Anyone that hears my name will think that I'm something eternal And with my luck, that'll be like five people If you're ignorant, my voice will be a knife that bleeds you And if you're evil I'll wage war on you astride a giant eagle With a tidal wave of lightning You'll wish that bitch never conceived you Fuck this planet, fuck this world, I'm living with the Martians We'll send explosive parcels to your holy house of bargains Sleeping dogs lie about their slumber And if they bark at me, they'll get that glass doghouse torn asunder The next world wonder will be my Colossus To construct it, I'll recycle the other wonders in the process To peole that talk down to me, your words are getting noticed One day I'll sacrifice you for an audience of Romans And with your last breath, you'll say my name and be consumed By Death's bony claw, and not a moment too soon Do you realize now, the force that makes my spirit burn Is way beyond the maximum capacity of words For any language, Latin, Hebrew, Spanish, or English The fact that I can't make them stronger is my only weakness (Feb 12, 2010 | post #6258)
Whether I be high as hell playing Modern Warfare And not giving a flying shit about my day-to-day affairs Or sitting in a classroom acting like I'm aware Pretending I have motivation, when actually I don't care I'm still just a kid that collides with the world Like Nelson Mandela, I'm just a average run of the mill good fella Who by his integral nature is unhealthily mellow But has to make a choice between running for a shelter And standing himself up in a rain of shell toes Without an umbrella Go between the blades of a moving propeller Like Helen Keller blind in face of Hell's Kitchen Satan's Cellar Or am I exagerrating the way the world eats you and expels you Or what sins it tells you to do Don't read it wrong, I not religious But sometimes its in my blood type to be a cynic Cause people are friends for just a minute And then they see you flinch and call you a bitch With words so acidic It could burn through an epidermis like hot glue What the fuck do you care as long as its not you People are Germans, and not shepherds of the Jews But selfish beings that live to keep themselves like new Not everyone is that way But enough to still disgust me Because I know for true it's no country For old men or sickly people, and no one is another's equal Run to the cathedral, but God is on the other side His ears are crowded, and in space no one can hear you cry It's you and I, and just a second of linking between us Because you read this and rekindled akin to a phoenix But if you had no feeling like you're on some Novacaine Then go about your ways with no will to taken away from your haze One day you'll see the error of the path in which you partake One day you'll see you can't just go and steal and eat your cake (Feb 3, 2010 | post #6168)
Masta Ace doesn't write better songs than Em. If he had songs as good as "Stan", "Lose Yourself", etc. and approach music with more variety then he'd be on top of things. But he doesn't. He's just a MC for the most part. That's why Mos Def gets more respect than Talib in the mainstream too. I'd say that Mos and Black Thought and Common are top 10 for me too. But so is Eminem. He's paid his dues and made a name for himself and spit some of, in my mind, the freshest rhymes on "wax" (w/e that means these days). So he's no joke. If he has a broader range than just the boom bap that certain people enjoy...well, nobody's making you like him. But he's his own artist and he does his own thing; you can never say that he's jacking his swagger or plagiarizing with his style. He's not. Ad you *CANNOT* compare Em to fucking Jedi Mind Tricks. If Eminem's fucking producer was Stoupe, you wouldn't be saying that! Vinnie Paz is not a good rapper and it's ridiculous to say he's in a whole other league. "I murder you and laugh", right? Shit, mention Canibus or Apathy or anyone but that guy... (Jan 16, 2010 | post #125)
Nas4Life hit it! In a nutshell thats why Ether is some hellish spray from a true master of the mic. Nas never gets too worked up about any shit. He doesn't even straight-diss anymore, he just backhands 50 and Jim Jones subliminally. A true emcee knows when his bite is more important than his bark. (Jan 16, 2010 | post #227)
My Top Emcees Breathing Now are... Lupe Fiasco Eminem Nas Black Thought Aesop Rock Method Man P.O.S. Shit guys I can't come up with ten...can anyone recommend another really engaging rhymer? (Nov 29, 2009 | post #3082)
I don't see how rappers can be considered corporate slaves. It's obvious enough that recording companies don't necessarily want to make rappers appear stupid (what you are suggesting) so much as they want to make money. And sometimes, they can sell it without really applying that much effort or creativity, as is the case with so many of our Yung Lil Bois and such. If people buy the music, they will continue to make it. You cannot blame the corporations so disproportionately to the target audience that eagerly buys it and doesn't care how informative or afrocentric it is. That being said, Biggie was just wanting to leave the ghetto, so that's what he had a lot of songs about. I honestly doubt that any government or business figures actually had 2Pac murdered; the fact that the circumstances of his death are still not certain makes me think the police were behind it, but you can't present assumptions as the truth. Marijuana is safer, more universally useful, and far easier for the public to produce themselves than a lot of prescribed medications. It's too bad that pharmaceutical companies will have such a hard time profitting from something you can grow yourself in your house! Guess the best solution is to keep it illegal. Taking controlled substances is a personal choice, and to technically turn regular citizens into criminals and force them to have to associate with other (possibly violent) criminals is so stupid and narrow-minded I'm amazed this country hasn't moved on. People that oppose marijuana wish they had the level of self-awareness and contentment that users have. Not that that would mean anything to you, considering you've probably never tried it.
