Are Musical Abilities a Thing of the Past?

I agree that anything worthwhile requires some effort. I can't, nor do I claim to turn anybody into a virtuoso pianist in three hours! My class is designed for adults who already have a little knowledge of music, and the piano keyboard. Perhaps they tried the traditional method of piano lessons and it didn't work for them, or they may have had a bad experience as a child. I show my students how to have fun playing some popular songs. This is NOT for classical music. If you want to play classical there really is no other way than years of private lessons and study and practice. Pop music works differently, and most (not all) traditional (classical) teachers do not know how to teach it. I have met some excellent pianists who played beautifully from the music, but would be disappointed when they tried to play a pop song from the music. It wouldn't "sound like the record"! I can show someone like that how to do it in a few hours. I have had traditional piano teachers take my class to learn how it's done. Some even go on to become certified to teach this course, and offer it to their students (either as an alternative, or along with the traditional method) I still teach privately, as well, to students who are local (I live in the Conyers area) I offer them a choice between the traditional, note reading (treble and bass clef) and the chord based method. This IS the method used by professional musicians in the popular field. If any of my students want to go further they will know the basic method, plus they will leave my class with the resources to advance to a higher level. Most just want to play for their enjoyment. Weather an adult beginner, or near beginner, sounds like "Mary Had a Little Lamb" forever is up to the student. The more they play, and apply what I show them, the better they will get. The focus of my class is to have fun with music. If its enjoyable to the students, they will want to play more, playing more leads to improvement, which will inspire them to play more  (Jul 19, 2010 | post #7)
