Methadone During Pregnancy May Harm Baby 9/29/2005 For women fighting opiate addiction, methadone maintenance during pregnancy helps them stay off drugs -- but it may have adverse effects on the unborn baby, investigators report. "Methadone maintenance offers clear benefits to the pregnant, opiate-dependent woman (decreased use of illicit substances, reduced fetal mortality, etc.), but it is not without adverse consequences for the infant," Dr. Lauren M. Jansson from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, told Reuters Health. "This research has additionally found that methadone used during pregnancy has significant effects on fetal neurobehavior that are independent of maternal effects." Jansson and colleagues studied 40 pregnant women attending a substance abuse treatment facility, simultaneously monitoring indicators of neurologic functioning in the fetus and the mother's physiologic responses during high and low methadone levels. At peak methadone levels, fetuses had significantly slower heart rate and fewer heart rate accelerations than at trough methadone levels -- signs of impaired heartbeat regulation. The duration of fetal movements and the total amount of fetal activity were reduced by half at peak maternal methadone levels, the authors report in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. By contrast, mothers responses were the same at high and low methadone levels. "This raises an ethical question for the care of the pregnant, opiate-dependent woman," Jansson said. "The answer to this question lies in the benefit that can be obtained from the ancillary services that can be provided along with methadone maintenance," she said, referring to services such as prenatal care and parenting training, in addition to substance abuse treatment. "Methadone maintenance should only be provided during pregnancy in combination with these services, and never in their absence to this group," Jansson concluded. Born to mothers who smoke or use drugs. Smoking cigarettes during or after your pregnancy or using drugs such as cocaine, heroin or methadone while you're pregnant puts your baby at considerably higher risk of SIDS. /3au8vu 24. April 2007, Swissinfo Study confirms alcohol risk during pregnancy Women who consume alcohol or drugs during pregnancy could do permanent damage to their unborn child, according to the first:ever long:term study into the issue. Researchers at Zurich University and in Germany have published their findings into fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Nearly 40 individuals with FAS or FASD (fetal alcohol syndrome spectrum disorder) were followed over a 20:year period, from early childhood. The results, published in the Journal of Paediatrics, found while some physical problems such as cranial and facial deformities can improve over time, men whose mothers had consumed alcohol remained underweight while women often stayed overweight. And Professor Hans:Christoph Steinhausen at Zurich University, in collaboration with Berlin paediatrician Hans:Ludwig Spohr, was for the first time able to present evidence that "intellectual and behavioural problems persist and prevent most of the individuals from successfully working or living independently ". Many retained mental disabilities which limited their employment opportunities and therefore kept them dependent on social services for their welfare. The researchers cautioned that it was not yet possible to determine the level of alcohol that caused damage to an unborn child, but recommended that women limit their consumption to no more than one glass a day. Steinhausen and his colleagues also investigated the impact of illicit drug consumption, working with drug addicts taking part in a Swiss treatment programme and their offspring. Intelligence Tests found that the intelligence levels of children of substance:dependen t mothers were significantly lower than the Swiss average and "there was an excess of children with subnormal intellectual functioning". Biological and psychosocial risks were taken into account to see if these were factors in the children's development. These included the mother's social network, characteristics of her addiction, as well as her own intelligence and psychological state. While a lack of a support group, low level of education and mental disorders in the women contributed to their children developing behavioural problems, it was discovered that substance abuse in the prenatal phase, predominately use of heroin or methadone, was the only factor that had a negative effect on IQ. swissinfo with agencies 2007/04/24/eng/art icle7746566.html  (Aug 7, 2008 | post #2805)

Heroin and other opiates, including methadone, can cause significant withdrawal in the baby, with some symptoms lasting as long as four to six months. Seizures may also occur and are more likely in babies born to methadone users. /y9p3nn EFFECT OF CHRONIC METHADONE ADMINISTRATION ON PREGNANT RATS AND THEIR OFFSPRING Doris Buchenauer 1 , Marilyn Turnbow 1 , and Marvin A. Peters 1 1 Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California Chronic administration of methadone to pregnant rats is associated with an increase in mortality compared with either nontreated pregnant rats or treated nonpregnant rats. These observations would suggest some interaction between pregnancy and methadone administration. Treatment of the female during pregancy resulted in a decreased number of live offspring per litter, an increase in the percentage of stillborn pups, an increase in infant mortality and a retardation of growth of the pups nursing treated mothers. There was a dose-response relationship in most parameters at the lower doses used but at higher dose levels the dose-response was not as obvious. The overall effect of methadone on reproduction was seen as an increase in the number of maternal deaths, a decrease in the number of pups born per litter and a decrease in the number of pups weaned. One hundred and forty-eight pups were weaned from 20 control animals while 20 animals in each of the three treated groups, 2.5, 5 and 7.5 mg/kg of methadone, raised 78, 42 and 41 pups, respectively, to weaning age. Do homicide charges deter drug dealers?

Thank you Pain Free and I agree with your thoughts on diversion We can't exclude the need for traning for physicians who do not understand the unique properties of methadone or recklessly prescribing opioids and other drugs for cash. You would be shocked to see how many deaths we have do not have to do with diversion. Melis  (Aug 6, 2008 | post #44)

Hi Everyone I have been really busy lately and haven't had much time to stop by but just wanted to let you all know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I see nothing has changed around here and personally hope that the personal attacks disgusting behavior would end and a civil debate on the efficacy of methadone would resume. melis  (Aug 4, 2008 | post #3126)

A netti pot works great along with inhaling steam from a pot that has thyme and orregano in it!!! Will clear up you sinus problem in less time then drugs and shouldn't cause a positive UA. This will also release the pressure in your head. Just a suggestions that there are things besides drugs to use to heal thyself. melis  (Jul 28, 2008 | post #21)

Berwyn revokes approval of methadone clinic

In 2005 Methadone is indicated in over 4600 deaths nationwide and this number is underestimated due to an error in ICD10 coding and non uniform procedures in reporting and determining causes of death. Methadone is killing more people than any other prescription drug, killing 2 people for every 100 exposed. Methadone KILLS when taken EXACTLY as prescribed!! Most of these deaths are related to methadone prescribed with other medications that react as additives with the methadone. Diversion of methadone is a serious problem because it lands this most deadly drug on streets. Statistics also state that methadone is contributing to more deaths nationwide then heroin and only second to cocaine deaths. The potential of abuse, diversion, and overdose to new patients being prescribed methadone is overwhelming. The unique properties of methadone, it's long half life, and it's negative interaction with numerous drugs make it an optimal choice as a last result treatment for chronic pain and addiction. harmd .org Helping America Reduce Methadone Deaths Please sign the petition here http://www.thepeti ion/472711451  (Jul 23, 2008 | post #31)
