Obits

Obituaries these days are paid for and written by families -- we have no control over their contents. Marc Charisse editor  (Oct 11, 2011 | post #2)

Part-time hire draws fire

I'm trying to figure out why this has been flagged so many times? If I'm missing something, please email me to explain and I'll consider taking down the post. Marc Charisse [email protected] un.com  (May 27, 2011 | post #27)

Maxon-Dixon loses bid for Adams County casino

I've just shut down the other casino thread because of Gettysburg Mom's personal attacks. While she's by no means the only one, she's one of the most prolific. Please tone down the nastiness or this thread will be next and Mom will find herself banned like bill and have to get a new nickname and post from a new computer.  (Apr 22, 2011 | post #667)

Evening Sun yanks comments for Town Hall

As reluctant as I was to shut down the board, I felt it was better to be safe and not let this get out of hand. I appreciate your understanding. marc  (Mar 30, 2011 | post #29)

Evening Sun yanks comments for Town Hall

Toward the end of the comments there was one that seemed a threat of physical violence and implored people not to bring their children to the meeting. That's when I shut the thread down. Marc Charisse  (Mar 30, 2011 | post #25)

Bill planned to halt G'burg casino

You're right, she's not the only offender, any more than Bill Kearney was. I was only using her as an example. Marc  (Feb 21, 2011 | post #656)

Bill planned to halt G'burg casino

I did shut another thread down this morning and am tempted here as well. It seems Baseball Mom is back on the personal attacks and doesn't have Bill Kearney to blame this time around. Marc Charisse Editor, The Evening Sun  (Feb 21, 2011 | post #653)

Study boosts local slots

I just shut down another of the casino boards and am waiting to see if Bill and the other abusive posters got the message. I plan to discuss this whole issue further in my Sunday column. Marc Charisse Editor, The Evening Sun  (Feb 10, 2011 | post #181)

Gaming board members appointed

I just deleted Bill Kearney's latest post so you know who I say I am. I've been reluctant to wade into this foolishness and figure you deserve each other on these casino threads. However, I've been getting more complaints and the posts have actually gotten worse, if such a thing is possible. If you casino regulars can't tone it down and behave just a bit more civilly, I will be forced to take down all the casino threads. Marc Charisse Editor, The Evening Sun  (Feb 9, 2011 | post #170)

Women's shelter goes 'public'

Common sense: It does appear your post was killed, but by a Topix administrator, not by me. I'm not sure why, because unlike us editors, they don't always list reasons on the deleted posts. You might try reposting it or contacting Topix. Marc Charisse  (Jan 28, 2011 | post #28)

Women's shelter goes 'public'

Anyone who wants to post a list of men's shelters, or discuss the issue of abused men, is free to do so. The previous post was taken down because it didn't provide such information, it only bashed Survivors and told lies about its clients. Marc  (Jan 24, 2011 | post #20)

Hanover councilman's death ruled an overdose

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. We've taken down a few comments, but most are well within bounds, especially when you consider the subject was a public official. In fact, I think this is one of the more productive and intelligent Topix discussions I've seen, and on a matter of legitimate public interest. We'll be editorializing on this later this week. Taking little 'Glee' in GQ spread

Dear Confused, Perhaps I should have said called them my fellow buffs or some such thing. I hope regular readers know that I'm not near as old as I look... Marc  (Nov 1, 2010 | post #2)

Hanover police seek robbers

As a matter of policy, we list race as part of a description of a wanted person when available. In this case, that information was not provided by police. Marc Charisse Editor The Evening Sun  (Sep 21, 2010 | post #16)

Hanover councilman holds community forum

I usually resist the temptation to respond to comments, but feel the need to do so here. It is true that the reporter on this story had to reschedule one meeting and mixed up the time on one the following day. However, he contacted the chief that afternoon, apologized and tried to reschedule. The chief said he had no further time available. As a result, we held the story over last weekend and the reporter again emailed the chief Monday morning to ask if he had any time last week. The chief wrote back his schedule was too full. The reporter then sent the chief a list of questions seeking comment, but he never replied. I don’t believe all that was necessary to the story. The fact is The Evening Sun made repeated efforts to talk to the chief, and since the story deals with law enforcement issues in Hanover, felt it necessary to explain why he wasn’t quoted while other area chiefs were.
