Conservatives roar; GOP trembles

Although he claims an independent streak, I have yet to see any evidence of it. Usually sounds like a Republican who is ashamed to 'fess up to being a Republican. After W, can we blame him?  (5 hrs ago | post #149)

Car kills pedestrian in St. Paul

Peter Paul And Mary Where Have All The Flowers Gone Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing? Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago? Where have all the flowers gone? Gone to young girls, every one! When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn? Where have all the young girls gone, long time passing? Where have all the young girls gone, long time ago? Where have all the young girls gone? Gone to young men, every one! When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn? Where have all the young men gone, long time passing? Where have all the young men gone, long time ago? Where have all the young men gone? Gone to soldiers, every one! When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn? And where have all the soldiers gone, long time passing? Where have all the soldiers gone, a long time ago? Where have all the soldiers gone? Gone to graveyards, every one! When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn? And where have all the graveyards gone, long time passing? Where have all the graveyards gone, long time ago? Where have all the graveyards gone? Gone to flowers, every one! When will they ever learn, oh when will they ever learn? Written by Pete Seeger, also performed by Peter, Paul & Mary.  (6 hrs ago | post #14)

Six are semifinalists in St. Paul schools superintendent search

I request that the School Board be color-blind in their selection process. We have had enough, actually FAR TOO MUCH, Political Correctness in recent Super choices. Make a careful but great choice, and ask for a commitment to both excellence and duration of service!  (6 hrs ago | post #4)

Maine's referendum on gay marriage law is too close to call

1. Two-point reply: A. This argument is clearly nutty, because only the Opponents are making it. If those advocating same-sex marriages were also advocating a dramatic widening of the marriage sacrament (gosh, as long as we are doing this, why not siblings et cetera) then this argument would hold. However, it is just a rhetorical device and a fallacious one at that. B. You must have noticed that Language is itself arbitrary, relying on both context and agreement to function. Words mean what they mean only because we agree upon the definition -- in any language. In the same vein, objects have only the value that social agreement gives them. Go to Africa and offer a Pygmy a roll of $100 bills -- he will put them in his fire to assist cooking his supper. He is not party to our agreement of what those green pieces of paper mean, or what they are worth. To him, they are kindling. You write as if there is some Fundamental Truth contained in the word Marriage -- that mere humans may not modify. 2. This whole paragraph is just another cut at the need to retain the status quo, because it has always been that way. This same argument was used against female suffrage, and against civil rights as well. "Women have NEVER had the right to vote, not even in Europe. Why upset the natural order of things?" I do not impute this canard to you, of course -- it is just how conservatives resist changing what they consider "the natural order of things." The "deep-seated meaning" is just another label for the status quo, which many are reluctant (to understate) to alter -- EVER. Perhaps we should define Liberals as those open to Change, or agents of Change; and Conservatives as those committed to a homeostatic society free from upheavals.  (6 hrs ago | post #449)

Maine's referendum on gay marriage law is too close to call

Thank you! Maybe not you, but someone always raises the "Why not marry my dog?" argument against changing the definition of Marriage. I would like to know about the organized forces who will spring up and demand that Marriage be expanded to include siblings, offspring & parents, adults and babies, et cetera. I await with bated breath.  (Yesterday | post #442)

Irwin Jacobs out at Genmar, turnaround outfit says

Just what is the relevance between a business on the street and a traffic accident on that street near the business? Was either the pedestrian or the driver drunk from consuming alcohol at that bar? If this happened in front of a church, would you still blame the church? Would you say, "Well, you know how those Catholics are?"  (Tuesday | post #13)

I understand your concern. I haven't seen any other groups demanding to be allowed to marry their children, their pets, or barnyard animals. Perhaps you could share the names of such groups against which you are defending Marriage, and any links to them, their mailing addresses, their manifestos, et cetera. I would like to know against what we should be defending. Please enlighten me!  (Tuesday | post #439)

Maine's referendum on gay marriage law is too close to call

Oh, pleez! This is a textbook example of the logical fallacy titled Reductio ad Absurdum. Gosh, when we refined the definition of American Voter to include women, we didn't slide down that so-called slippery slope and enfranchise children, domestic animals, and hummingbirds! We simply included women. Period. We can and will do it again. We will redefine Marriage to include those of the same-sex orientation, and will find the strength not to include immediate family, pets, and livestock. You will notice that proponents are NOT calling for these inclusions -- only the opponents continue to raise this fallacious point. You know better, Thomas!  (Tuesday | post #431)
