Scott Maxwell: Stop thumping the Bible - start reading it

I guess you are right, the sodomite party won the last two elections as evidenced by how screwed we all are now. Yes indeed, God help us!  (4 hrs ago | post #366)

Not good! Way too judgmental and personal! Isn't it sinful to pass judgment?  (4 hrs ago | post #986)

It also came from St. Augustine who came up with the whole concept of original sin. Even though I am a Christian, I don't believe in the concept of original sin. In my opinion, sin is really overrated. Love is far more important than sin.  (4 hrs ago | post #1364)

Should a Christian accept a non-Christian's interpretation of Scripture?

Christianity is usually connected to a religion. It is unnecessary for a person to believe in a religion to find God.  (4 hrs ago | post #391)

Should a Christian accept a non-Christian's interpretation of Scripture?

I have found that many non-believers actually know a great deal more about scripture than many Christians. The purpose of scripture is to inspire and to reveal a truth. Since both non-believers and those Christians who do not understand this principal often bring an agenda to the table, they find neither truth or inspiration.  (Sunday Oct 12 | post #339)

The reason the law of Moses cannot be written by Moses is because of the number of authors who describe God in their specific way e.g. Yahweh, and Elohim. The Yahwist sect came after the rule of David and were located in the north. Each part of the Torah were written at entirely different times much later than Moses, therefore they could not have been written by Moses. They came from verbal traditions. Furthermore, the "Priest" , who represent the Levitical priestly set, most likely contributed much of the sacrificial and cleanliness codes rather than Moses or Aron. Although Torah is attributed to Moses and Aron, most scholars or Biblical historians agree that it was written over a period of time much later. Some people say it is divinely inspired, others do not.  (Sunday Oct 12 | post #338)

On the other hand, by looking into the twists and turns it has taken, we shed a great deal of light on human prejudice and assumptions based upon one's social position and the position of the church at the time of translation or interpretation.  (Sunday Oct 12 | post #354)

I don't do sin just like I don't do lunch. ;) Interesting concept though.  (Saturday Oct 11 | post #1265)

Then we are both in the ball park for it is the same definition I posted earlier. This is how I used the term with the assumption we are both talking about the "body of myths." *** a body of myths: as a: the myths dealing with the gods, demigods, and legendary heroes of a particular people  (Saturday Oct 11 | post #1264)

I agree with you. The study of the Bible and its impact throughout history teaches us a great deal more than just what is contained in the text.  (Saturday Oct 11 | post #326)

Ah but the so called "Law of Moses" is actually the work of several authors who lived both geographically separated and also separated by several hundred years. How could what is referred to as the "Law of Moses" have been revealed to Moses and Arron and have been recorded faithfully. This is why Jesus chastised the scribes and Pharisees? This was all a verbal tradition and appears to have had a great deal added to it in support of the priests who were called Levites at the time.  (Saturday Oct 11 | post #325)
