Fannin County Rec Dept

Looks like what "Concerned Citizen" was trying to tell us all way back in 2010 is finally happening!!! I just hope that Fannin Focus continues reporting the TRUTH & asking the tough questions of our elected officials & then having the courage to print what they find out!! In case you haven't seen the latest edition, I recommend that anyone interested in where/how local taxes & revenues have(or have not) been accounted for in regards to the Recreation Dept pick up a copy of Fannin Focus. Come to find out, the free housing arrangement really has been "free" b/c a 1099 has never been filed as additional compensation above the director's base salary! According to the paper, the rec dept has been in charge of it's own accounting, but in 2011 was required to purchase quickbooks. Since having an accounting system, the revenue that has been reported to the county has increased substantially every year. The Commission Chairman had "no comment", while the 2 post commissioners said they would each look into why such a difference. The sad thing is, that this is only one dept that was allowed free reign without any oversight. There are many more depts within our county that we as taxpayers have been too busy to question how/where/why the money is being spent. The school board is a whole other form of govt/entity in itself & I personally am just learning how much control they have. Almost half of our property taxes go directly to the school system. Just think of all the 2nd home owners who pay property taxes here but don't benefit from our school system. The Revolutionary War was supposedly fought over "taxation w/o representation ". I don't want to get a debate started about our elected officials or the dept heads who have been in charge of spending our tax revenues. I would just like to challenge each person who reads this to start asking questions and becoming more involved in the day-to-day running of our local govts. I personally believe that our Fed govt is too far gone to even try to "save", but if we each start paying more attention to what is going on locally, then I really believe we can all make a difference!  (Dec 22, 2014 | post #49)

Anyone could do what he has accomplished with the budget and revenue that he has! I think you may be giving him just a little too much credit!  (Sep 8, 2014 | post #44)

New football coach is a joke

This ENTIRE thread sickens me...but this comment, probably the worst! "Fed up", I don't know if you are a jealous & disgruntled player or parent whose son sits on the sideline. Either way, your embarrassment should come from telling a kid, whom I know personally, that they "suck"! I plan on informing the parents, because there is such a law as "cyber bullying" & you are crossing that fine line! I feel for these boys who put their body, heart and soul into training on and off the field! The only opinion that I believe or that anyone should believe in this entire thread is "Man in Plaid"! He has obviously followed Rebel football for several years. ..w/o having a kid even on the field! He has given honest opinions about where improvements/adjus tments can & should be made, but always in a positive, degrading manner! I don't know who the guy is, but maybe we should all find out & see if he would be willing to be a part of the coaching staff, if only as a consultant! At least the boys would receive encouragement in a positive manner, as opposed to the immature back-biting that is going on here. Go back and read his comments, even the ones from the past few years when all the whiny parents were complaining about Chambers and his staff. I have been watching this unfold for years and I don't see anything improving until our rec program becomes a feeder program for FCMS & FCMS becomes a feeder program. for FCHS. The only problem I see with that is that you have Mom & Dad's who believe their child is much better than he is & those parents seem to be the ones who coach at the rec level to ensure that their child is the "star"! It is the same way with EVERY sport! I have never understood why our rec league teams continue to play against each other, which causes animosity and division at an early age. There are plenty of teams in the surrounding counties to play against...but that would require a little more effort from our rec director in coordinating schedules, which hasn't happened in the past 30 years since he has been here! Maybe we should be looking to replace him with someone willing to work with FCMS & FCHS coaches for a change! Then again, I believe coaches' egos get in the way & each coach believes their way is best, well obviously that old mentality isn't working! Lighten up on these KIDS & go out and offer encouragement and support, win or lose. I just hate that at least 3 players, that I know very well & who all come from great families and are great kids, had to come on this forum and defend themselves and their coach from immaturity of armchair quarterbacks, who have nothing better to do than to kick the kids while they're down and disappointed already!  (Sep 4, 2014 | post #47)

Best tasting BBQ so far

All these BBQ reviewers need to come out to the Blues & BBQ festival on Sept 20th in downtown BR! Www.facebook.com/B lueRidgeBluesandBB Q I usually end up just getting a bowl of stew and garlic salad from the Pink Pig's booth, it's hard to beat either of those, but I do hear lots of people talking about how great the food is at different booths!  (Aug 19, 2014 | post #18)

Taxes

FC has 3 commissioners, 2 post & and chairman....guess what...the chairman is still the dictator of the county! He belittles the other 2 for even questioning his ethics(trying not to lol) & decision making, so I'm not so sure that is the way to go either. Please come to some of our meetings, the commissioners meet at 5:30 & the BR city council meets at 6:30 on the 1st Tues of the month! Honestly, you could get as much entertainment & probably as much logic as sitting on the park bench at any playground!! It's really starting to get embarrassing when you have grown men pitch tantrums!  (Aug 18, 2014 | post #22)

Andy Hyde - Family Nurse Practitioner

I seriously just got sick at my stomach! I was not going to voice my opinion about what happened with/to his wife....I was there through the entire ordeal...I never trusted him, but gave him the benefit of doubt. However, you have just struck a nerve and I hope and pray that this story isn't true! I have a registered account, so would you mind contacting me to confirm this! I don't have a problem confronting Mr.Hyde personally myself, but I would like to know if there is any truth to this first.  (Aug 18, 2014 | post #21)

Fannin County 2014 Property Tax Assessments

The same reason that the Development Authority hired a kid right out of college to be over bringing jobs and industry to this county and then 2 years later had to move another person over to "help" her do that job! There is so much waste, corruption & nepotism that goes on right under our noses. I believe we have all been so "conditioned " not to question authority, that we have become apathetic! Most people don't even care anymore! Just look at the Union Co forum and see all the corruption that has been exposed by a group up there & their citizens don't seem to care either. Here is a copy of the CAFR for the state of GA from 2002, the person who did this site died mysteriously, so the site isn't kept current. He deciphered CAFRs for each state and some counties within certain states. We all hear about budget " shortfalls" and how taxes will have to be raised, but we never hear about these CAFRs that show the real story! Like I said, this was from 2002, I believe, so there is no telling how much the profits & gains are up to now! It's like owning your own business and having 2 sets of books, one that tells the truth about the business and the other that you want people (IRS, maybe if you have something to hide) to believe! http://www.cafrman .com/Articles/Art- GA-S1.htm  (Jul 19, 2014 | post #20)

Fannin County 2014 Property Tax Assessments

Do your research on CAFRs ( Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports). Each state, county(school system has its own) and municipality has one, but most people have no clue what they are or how to read them. You can go to YouTube & study or here is an informative site: www.cafr1.com here is a link to a blog that will help you understand how to read one: http://realityblog er.wordpress.com/2 011/03/03/cafr-sch ool-a-lesson-in-fi nancial-accounting / It's time that citizens wake up as to what has been going on right under our own noses! I will research and see if I can find the FC school system CAFR anywhere on the web, it could be that it will have to be requested by an open records request, which I don't mind doing. A quick google search found this site, but only has FC CAFR as a PDF download: https://ted.cviog. uga.edu/ted/Defaul t.do Time to wake up the masses and start asking the tough questions to our elected officials!  (Jul 19, 2014 | post #17)

Old 76 detour

The detour is a pain though. Do they detour you all the way to dry branch rd off aska? I was going to the PO & forgot about it, did a u-turn at the co barn & just went down 515, but was just curious if the detour sent people all the way through dry branch.  (Jul 16, 2014 | post #4)

Old 76 detour

Visibility leaving FCMS is terrible. You would think that with all the traffic they would/could figure out a better way to manage parent pick-up! They should make aska connector one way during morning drop-off & afternoon pick up...but that would require using common sense...something that our school system/board seems to be lacking!  (Jul 16, 2014 | post #3)
