Mena for Mayor

Really folks?!?! The TOB is at a crossroads and the best we can do is challenge the strongest mayoral candidate over how he walks his dog? We deserve the mess the TOB is in if that's the crux of our initial vetting of a candidate. Can't wait to hear that Mr. Harmon is a racist because he owns a confederate history store. That's another robust topic for conversation. And Andy Ball's education...who gives?!? If he is the best man for the job based on his track record who cares if he graduated kindergarten or has a PhD...so long as he isn't lying about his achievements. I commend these three men for putting themselves and their families on public display and subjecting themselves to this ridiculousness. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone...Let's focus on the REAL issues people!  (Aug 8, 2013 | post #14)

Springer to run for district attorney

Randy, I have to disagree. The DA is an administrator, a leader. Nathan Miller and Four Eggers both have experience in that role. Like their politics or not, the fact is that the current DA's office is a debacle. Perpetuating a broken office is what Britt brings to the table. We need bold, unfettered and decisive leadership...for a change.  (Aug 8, 2013 | post #5)

Springer to run for district attorney

This is bad news. Britt Springer is a Jerry Wilsin clone and that's bad for all of us. We need someone to come in and shake up the laziness and arrogance of the DA's office. Business as usual would be harmful to our community. I, for one, hope that Nathan Miller or Four Eggers chooses to run for DA. We need leadership, accountability and vision. Britt doesn't offer any of these attributes.  (Aug 5, 2013 | post #1)

Divorce vs. Mediation?

My husband and I are separating and agree that we'd rather not talk to attorneys...too expensive. We heard about some attorneys who are doing mediation in sepapration and divorce. My friend said the office is on King Street, across from the courthouse? Anyone know anything about this group? i think its Appalachian Law? Anyone done mediation in separation and divorce with these people?  (Apr 14, 2013 | post #1)

Sales tax change could boost town coffers

Here's the deal...the Town of Boone, as the largest town in Watauga County, has long dictated policy for all residents of Watauga. Now that we have a County Commission with backbone, the TOB has decided to whine, demagogue Commissioner Miller (a good man) and stomp their feet when things don't go their way. We can hide our heads in the sand and avoid the realities of growth, like the TOB is inclined to do, and suffer the consequences of being a place that people visit or come for school and then leave. Or, we can work together and try to forge a policy that serves all of Watauga County's residents and not just those in the Town of Boone or ETJ. Our county commissioners need to stand strong on the issue of the sales tax distribution and the voters of Boone need to keep in mind that without us county-folk, their riches wouldn't be nearly what they are.  (Apr 14, 2013 | post #4)

superintendent

I wonder how many of you who have posted here have actually met Dr. Kafitz never mind spent time with him to understand his vision and pedagogics? I have had that pleasure and as a result find his leaving to be a real loss to this community. I also find it interesting that some folks here have suggested that our next superintendent be local, whether he/she is qualified or not. Really?!?!?! We have the best high school facility in the state and we want to have our kids led by a good ole boy as opposed to a leader in education? That's sad, backwards and just not right. I hope that the school board has sufficient chutzpah to stand up for our kids and our collective future. Finally, while many are celebrating Dr. Kafitz's demise, let's remember that while we are paying him for the next 17 months, we'll also, at some point, be paying the new superintendent too. So, we have enough free cash in Watauga County that we can afford to pay multiple salaries for the same position? I wish Dr. Kafitz well and have no doubt that he will land squarely on his feet in a place where he is appreciated.  (Apr 10, 2013 | post #70)
