The figure 51% my friend quoted is due to the lubricants used in the condom. The condom, when properly used, is 98% effective against pregnancy. However, the numbers change drastically when the effective rate of the condom is measured against STD infection. Here's one study that puts the effectiveness of condoms at 80% for HIV infection. For each type of infection, the effectiveness of the condom varies. This means there is a 20% chance of infection from HIV according to Weller & Davis. http://www.scielos p.org/scielo.php?s cript=sci_arttext &pid=S0042-968 62004000600012 Based on the results of the remaining prospective studies, the panel reached three key conclusions. First, consistent condom use (i.e., using condoms during every act of vaginal intercourse) among heterosexual couples in which one partner was infected with HIV reduced the risk of HIV transmission from men to women and vice versa. This finding was based on a meta-analysis of condom effectiveness studies by Davis & Weller (2). They estimated that compared with no condom use, consistent condom use resulted in an overall 87% reduction in risk of HIV transmission, with the best-case and worst-case scenarios ranging from 60% to 96%. In an update of this analysis, Weller & Davis reported a revised estimate of an 80% reduction in risk with a range of 35–94% (3). (Jun 2, 2010 | post #11)
I was speaking with a friend just the other day regarding the safety of condoms. He is a nurse, and stated that the protection from condoms is about 51%. What many people do not realize is: a sperm is much larger than a germ or virus; if it is possible for sperm to get through a condom then it is MORE likely that a disease can get through. Statistics show the more partners a person has, the less likely they are to stay married when they do get married, if they do get married. The percentage of marriage is falling drastically in the US. Children who are raised with their original parents in the home are less likely to engage in risky behavior. They are less likely to drink, do drugs and get into serious trouble, less likely to end up in jail. They are more likely to succeed in life. The pill may cause serious health risk to the user. Other forms of birth control can be harmful to the user as well, resulting in serious complications. Some people develop allergies to latex, and the lubricants used in the condom can result in complications. Protected and unprotected sex outside of marriage is very risky. (Jun 1, 2010 | post #5)
FYI: Mr. Smith from Broadway street has passed away; he was 98 years old. Funeral services will be at Balheim funeral home on Jefferson today, Monday April 20 at 11 am. Mr. Smith was a retired firefighter. Good man he was. Just thought I'd let you know in case anyone knew him or his family. (Apr 20, 2009 | post #2543)
I just spoke with the president of the boosters today. There is a lot of misinformation in regards to the boosters and the money. The boosters do have a bank account, they have a treasurer and a whole team of people that work on this. There was some money stolen from a break in, but it was only a few hundred--not near the 6 thousand the rumor mill is passing around. The kids will be able to play, get uniforms and whatever else they do. There is a raffle for a nice Schwinn bike, tickets are $1.00 each or 6 tickets for $5.00 if you want to help them out. Talk to Jackie in the clerks office for tickets. (Mar 27, 2009 | post #5)
I just read in the Ecorse Newsletter that the police adopted 10 families for Christmas and took the kids shopping. The money came from donations from the officers. Thank you, officers, for giving those families a Merry Christmas. I hope this can be repeated next year, too. I'm sure it meant a great deal to those families, especially the children. The city is sending 4 people to the police academy. That is just wonderful news and I'm so glad to hear of it. Good job to our police officers and the fire department for delivering packages to our needy families and children. Our gals and guys in uniform did a great job this Christmas, volunteering your time and money to help others. That's what makes our police and fire so wonderful! (Dec 30, 2008 | post #4)
I hope everyone in Ecorse and throughout the world has a Merry, happy and healthy Christmas and New Year. (Dec 24, 2008 | post #1)
This is certainly something Ecorse can be proud of. Thank you, officer Mercado. So the guy comes running out of the bank with wads of cash in his hand? He lives only 4 blocks from the bank he robbed twice. This is kind of funny, like a movie or something. (Nov 14, 2008 | post #1)
More than that, sweety. He's been posting under many different names for about a year or so now, has even used other peoples id's to start some trouble. The best we can do is ignore him totally, and report him. (Nov 10, 2008 | post #75)
Can't he be reported for online harassment? Isn't there a law against that now. He has threatened many of us, if not all of us. Maybe someone should sic county on him. Maybe big bubba will help him to cool his heels. Could this be considered a form of online stalking, how he goes from thread to thread on here? (Nov 10, 2008 | post #74)
Yep, they sure do. I will be calling the priest shortly. btw, was followed this am. (Nov 10, 2008 | post #591)
Yes! Great debate. You seem to be pretty knowledgeable about embryos. I want to challenge you on this subject, if you do not mind more debate. Can you name one cure or treatment that has come about from the use of embryonic stem cells? (Oct 30, 2008 | post #32)
Ignore him; all he does is stir trouble here. No sense in paying an iota of attention. Did you hear if they caught the guy yet? (Oct 30, 2008 | post #12)
