Does anyone sympathize with striking teachers?

During my university years - and I attended very good schools - I knew a fair number of education majors. I can only recall one that was a high caliber intellect. The rest were marginal - or worse. For every high quality intellect that chooses teaching as a career, I'll bet there are nine others who would struggle to be average regardless of career choice. Most people never stop to consider that this country is able to provide good resources to its students, and good students are able to learn quite a bit on their own with minimal help from the people standing at the head of the class. It was that way when I was in school, and it still is. Taken as a group, I have now and have always had little use for secondary school teachers. I had a few very good ones, but most of them were clowns. It was exactly the same when my kids went to school, and it will never change.  (Saturday Sep 20 | post #26)

Woman killed in Route 22 crash was pregnant

Another one of Topix's deep thinkers weighs in. Your alias is "rational thinker", but your post is anything but. That's a very childlike and childish view you have of religion. Basically equating God to Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. As you've figured out, it doesn't work that way. You're a little light in the reasoning department.  (Aug 20, 2008 | post #186)

Allentown police find wanted man in bar

Comprehension is apparently not your strong suit. Lehigh Valley Forever made several good points. But he/she did it sarcastically. And very well, I might add. However, dunces like you don't do well with sarcasm. How's this? LVF's point is that many times, our Puerto Rican population, who are American citizens by birth, are a much bigger problem than other Hispanics who arrive here illegally. This country's biggest problem - by far - is "press 2 for Spanish".  (Aug 18, 2008 | post #18)

Allentown sees spike in poverty, study finds

This is a ridiculous, pre-packaged, stereotypical comment that is completely off topic. The article deals with the working poor. Working. Poor. The problem is that many people, and especially those at the bottom, don't have real goals or any kind of a life plan. They may understand they need to work, but they fail to understand that they need skills to earn meaningful wages. This nonsense of keeping jobs here is exactly that. Why? So I can pay $19.99 for a pair of rubber flip-flops (or the like) that cost me $4.99 made in Thailand? That ain't happening, and that's just the way it is. Stay in school. Get an education. Have a plan. Work to get ahead. Those who can do that will have my support and help when I can give it. Those who can't? We can't save them from themselves, and I'm not even interested in trying. I'm with the "put a fence around Allentown" crowd. Or the "I'm outta here" crowd. Definitely not the "let's fix this by throwing money at it" crowd. Because we can't. Period. Personal responsibility that begins early in life. That's the only solution to this problem. A problem that will be with us forever, because it's hard wired into the human condition.  (Aug 14, 2008 | post #2)

Jurors are given instructions regarding the law as relevant to the case. Your points are derived solely from your personal feelings, which are as irrelevant as your mother-in-law insofar as they relate to this discussion. Those jurors were not charged with protecting anybody from anything.  (Aug 8, 2008 | post #187)

And here we have the arbiter of what constitutes "thoughtfully ". The State apparently made it's case about as well as you're making yours. Which is to say, poorly. Your mother-in-law is irrelevant to this discussion  (Aug 8, 2008 | post #128)

I most certainly am a real Doc, and your post is foolish nonsense. There are no time limits on deliberations. The State obviously failed miserably in making it's case.  (Aug 8, 2008 | post #109)

I'm pretty sure TMC got the 15 minutes part right. Give or take. Save me from idiots.  (Aug 8, 2008 | post #105)

I know nothing of this man. What I know is that the article reports it took 15 minutes for him to be acquitted by a duly selected jury of his peers. What I suspect is that the posters here are the usual batch of fools and morons.  (Aug 8, 2008 | post #17)

Food challenge bigger, better

While I'm Festing, I will be eating neither out of my kitchen nor a dumpster. That's how life works. Neither black nor white most of the time. I've been Festing since the beginning. No mishaps yet. Unlike what you claim (and I doubt it), I don't know even one person who's gotten sick at Musikfest. I'll take my chances. By the way, it's "diarrhea ".  (Jul 30, 2008 | post #36)

And I know quite a few people who have gotten ill from food cooked in fine restaurants and in their own homes. You'll pass. Good. About 1.2 million people will choose not to join you. You won't be missed.  (Jul 29, 2008 | post #29)

Gotta be tough maneuvering thru the Fest with that stick up your butt. I'm sure the vendors will be pleased to entertain your questions. As far as references to food borne illness, I suppose that's possible. But after 25 years no reported outbreaks yet. The posters with those worries also are candidates for stick-ectomies.  (Jul 29, 2008 | post #18)

Save me from morons who think they know what they're talking about. I never said anything about rights or legality. That's an inference and an illogical one. Meaning, you cannot deduce that from what I wrote. If I do not appear on your property, there is zero probability I will die there by your hand or any other circumstance.  (Jul 26, 2008 | post #59)

Emmaus man charged after Penn State drinking spree

2002 eh? Wisdom of the ages. I'm the one who said school's don't set a minimum. Let's pick one of your examples. Penn. You say bottom 25% scored an average 650. What about 640? Anyone enrolled with those scores? How about 630? 620? Anyone there with an average score of 600? I could do the same for any of the schools you list. I repeat, there are no minimums. Anywhere. There are admissions boards that decide based on multiple factors including SAT scores. Looks like Penn didn't do such a hot job preparing you for real-world scenarios that are not black or white.  (Jul 25, 2008 | post #62)
