Scabies-There is hope in God

Maryland - Thanks for your post. Have faith that you will get better. Is it possible you now have post scabies. This can look very similar to scabies and can last for 8-12 months. You often need a good dermatologist to help you tell the difference.  (Jan 9, 2015 | post #10)

Post-Scabies Treatment Eczema

Yes, I have had the same experience. It waxes / wanes (some days worse than others) but over time (months and months) the bumps become fewer and fewer. I have made as a general rule, I will no longer go to thrift stores, I rarely shake people's hands, etc. I know it sounds crazy, but scabies is so overwhelming, I pray I never get it again. A couple pieces of advice, slather every bump you see with vaseline or some thick ointment (it keeps kids from feeling as itchy, and if they start scratching it confuses the picture a lot). Try to turn up the heat in the home (scabies doesn't live as long in the heat). I would investigate the school link - it is possible for an untreated child in the classroom to keep infecting everyone. I would ask the school nurse if she knows of other contacts in that classroom with scabies. Is the rash starting to go away again or is it just getting worse and worse. Post scabies should get worse, better, worse, better, etc. Active scabies only gets worse.  (Jan 8, 2015 | post #362)

Post-Scabies Treatment Eczema

This is the really hard thing about scabies that I think a lot of people underestimate. The post scabies is often very hard to distinguish between active scabies and it's very anxiety provoking. In terms of the bumps on your face this is a very common location for post scabies and very uncommon for active scabies so I would not be worried about those. In terms of the bumps on your child's fingers those are more worrisome (esp if in web creases or wrist). You will know within a day whether it is active or not. Active scabies progresses quickly and is extremely itchy. Post scabies bumps come and go. And post scabies is very common on the hand. I found the most helpful thing was to go to a dermatologist - they can do scrapings and look with a high-powered magnifying glass. Do you know where you got the initial infection? Are you around that person anymore?  (Jan 3, 2015 | post #360)

Depressedandanxious, once you have all been treated and are 2 weeks out from treatment, with the amount of cleaning you are doing it's unlikely for you to give it to anyone else. I share your pain - scabies is way more complicated when you have kids. Kids want to touch everything, and it's a constant concerned they are going to pick it up in the community.  (Jan 2, 2015 | post #358)

Giant hives post-scabies?

DesperateinPA are you now better? I have basically had the same exact experience as you. After being treated for scsbies, my skin became hypersensitive and now breaks out all the time. How long until this finally goes away?  (Jan 2, 2015 | post #35)

Treated Twice For Scabies & Have Hives Again! :(

My recommendation would be: 1) find a dermatologist who is academic (doesn't spend all their time doing Botox, cosmetic derm etc). 2) I would trust a dermatologist opinion more than a primary doc or ER doc. Dermatologists are much more likely to give you a definitive diagnosis. 3) Try to use as few creams / medicines as possible. For example, using a steroid may suppress or mask scabies, making it very difficult to diagnose scabies with accuracy. 4) Hives can be from post scabies. It does not mean you have active scabies. You can have a prolonged allergic response after scabies infection. http://www.dermnet nz.org/reactions/d ermographism.html 5) consider seeing an allergist as well?  (Jun 8, 2014 | post #3)

The Emotional Damage- Coping Skills Needed

Thanks nightmarescabies. I need to read that again. I do know that some people get a prolonged allergic type reaction after scabies (called dermatographism) so visiting an allergist may be helpful as well. Here's the link to that info: http://www.acaai.o rg/allergist/Resou rces/ask-allergist /Pages/Hives_from_ Scratching.aspx I hope I just have allergy and not active (reinfection)scabi es.  (Jun 3, 2014 | post #6)

Post Scabies vs. Active Scabies

Yes, my derms have done the same. They have a magnifying glass they use and also have done several swabs/scrapings to look under the microscope. These have been negative but I'm still getting so many bumps and so much itching Im starting to lose faith in their assessment. I don't feel scabies free because it's been several months since treatment and I have not returned to my baseline. I thought post scabies would be gone within a couple months. I guess there are so many of us inI the same boat. Just ready to have my health back!  (Jun 3, 2014 | post #18)

Post-Scabies Treatment Eczema

My bumps went away after treatment but then reappeared (but much fewer). I've been to the derm dozens of times and they say it's no longer active scabies, but it's very hard to convince myself of this, mainly because I never had rashes EVER in my life prior to scabies and i am still somewhat itchy.. The bumps come and go in crops, sometimes they stay longer than other times.  (Jun 1, 2014 | post #346)

Post Scabies vs. Active Scabies

Thanks Melissa. I agree with you - it seems to come and go. Some people describe the pattern as cyclical. Every time it comes though I worry about a new reinfestation and that's the hardest part. Derms don't seem to know a lot about post scabies which is frustrating.  (Jun 1, 2014 | post #15)

I agree. I feel the same way you do. The doctors say I am cured, but I'm not really sure I believe it in my heart bc I still keep getting rashes. Every time I get a new rash I break down and cry. I'm exhausted. I feel like I'm living in hell and will never get a break.  (Jun 1, 2014 | post #4)

Hives on body and blisters on hands long past scabies curing

I have had the same exact symptoms after getting rid of the scabies (which was diagnosed by a dermatologist). I'm in the same boat - the rashes come and go. Sometimes when I go to the dermatologist there is nothing, sometimes there are several bumps. They have told me it's post scabies (which I guess is like a prolonged allergic reaction). Was your scabies diagnosed by a derm?  (May 17, 2014 | post #5)

Scabies

Post Scabies vs. Active Scabies

Yes, it is more than likely post scabies (not active scabies) because with active the itching should be severe (up at night) and with post the bumps will be here and there but they shouldn't markedly progress. The best thing to do is to go to a derm and have them swab the lesions to look for live mites.  (May 16, 2014 | post #8)

Scabies is gone..

Thanks for your helpful post. How long after treatment did you have bumps and itching? I am 5 weeks post ivermectin, still getting bumps but not a lot (usually 4-5 on my hand at a time). It's so unnerving and anxiety provoking, because I panic each time I see a new spot. I've been to the dermatologist 6 or 7 times since treatment and they always say post (not active), but it's becoming hard to believe bc now I'm 5 weeks out still getting new bumps. I've been trying to avoid neem, sulfur etc bc I don't want to mask symptoms either. Any advice?  (May 10, 2014 | post #4)
