Anti-vaccination movement

http://www.iflscie nce.com/health-and -medicine/spain-s- first-case-diphthe ria-28-years-due-l ack-vaccination A six-year-old boy who had not been vaccinated is Spain’s first case of diphtheria in 28 years. The young boy, from the Catalan city of Olot, is reportedly very ill and is being treated with antitoxin. The parents, who had chosen not to vaccinate their child, are “devastated” and have now had their younger daughter immunized as a result. Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that spreads through coughing or sneezing, according to the World Health Organization. Once infected, sufferers can experience a sore throat, fever and swollen glands in the neck. Diphtheria can lead to serious complications even with treatment, with 10% of cases resulting in death. Spain’s Health Ministry had to scramble to find the drug to treat the child as there had not been a case of diphtheria in Spain for almost 28 years due to the country’s high vaccination coverage (over 95%). The antitoxin was eventually delivered from Moscow to Barcelona by the Russian ambassador. “The family is devastated and admit that they feel tricked, because they were not properly informed,” Catalan public health chief Antoni Mateu told El País. “They have a deep sense of guilt, which we are trying to rid them of.” The child remains in critical condition in Vall d’Hebron hospital’s intensive care unit, but is responding to treatment. Health officials have launched an investigation to find the original carrier, which they admit could be difficult if the carrier isn’t showing any symptoms. All those in contact with the child are under surveillance, and his classmates have been checked to see if they’ve been vaccinated. As a cautionary procedure, they have also given the children preventive medicine. “Vaccination is the best way to prevent diphtheria,” the WHO said in their report. They warn of the risks of parents hesitating or refusing to vaccinate their child, as gaps in coverage can accumulate and result in an outbreak. The WHO is working closely with the Spanish Ministry of Health and calls for increased vigilance to improve monitoring systems, raise awareness of the importance of vaccination and strengthen immunization programs.  (Jun 11, 2015 | post #26)

Anti-vaccination movement

I've read all about herd immunity and tried to explain it to those people who say "why do you care if my kid is vaccinated or not?" I just wish people would take the time to look into actual research instead of placing all their faith in celebrities and Playboy bunnies.  (Apr 22, 2015 | post #25)

Walmart mystery

I loathe Walmart. But, Walmart was a different place, with a different philosophy when Sam Walton was alive and running things.  (Apr 19, 2015 | post #5)

Anti-vaccination movement

Good Lord! The first sign someone has run out of any real sort of argument... Nazis! Seriously? Actually, I DID provide a link chock full of information debunking vaccination myths. Jenny McCarthy is smart? I didn't realize it took a lot of brains to take your clothes off... And seriously, do you know what blasphemy even means? How did this get to be religious? You've been given opportunity after opportunity to back up some of your claims and instead, you talk about Nazis and completely unrelated Bible verses. Jenny McCarthy's uneducated, anecdotes are more valuable than actual scientific data? Come on... use some logic, some reason...  (Apr 15, 2015 | post #21)

I'm not really sure what Jenny McCarthy has to do with any of this either. I wasn't aware she was a doctor, scientist or anything but a Playboy model and actress. That's where bad information like this is born. People are willing to accept a celebrity's opinion on science, but ignore actual scientists, people who have devoted their entire lives to learning about and studying this stuff.  (Apr 13, 2015 | post #18)

Anti-vaccination movement

No vaccine is 100% effective. According to CDC reports, “most routine childhood vaccines are effective for 85% to 95% of recipients. For reasons related to the individual, some will not develop immunity.” So unnecessarily adding to that pool of people with no immunity, you greatly add to the risk of creating an outbreak. One that could be avoided. I really just don't understand how people could be against vaccination, given all the evidence. Remember polio? People don't get that anymore. Wonder why? It's no coincidence that there's been a huge uptick in measles cases since the whole anti-vaccination movement began.  (Apr 13, 2015 | post #16)

If you could provide a name, I could do all kinds of research, including looking for patents. All I'm asking for is a name.  (Apr 13, 2015 | post #15)
