I remembered picking up my papers behind Tony's Pizza on Clarke St every afternoon. Back then you only got the paper delivered Monday - Friday, and the paper was a nickel. So at the end of the week I'd knock on the doors yelling 'Collect' in the hopes of getting paid... 25 cents for the papers and then a tip. I also had to pay for all those papers myself so if someone didn't pay I'd have to take it out of my own pocket. I still earned about 6 to 8 dollars a week which back in 1968 was pretty good. Then I'd go over to the candy store in the Hills shopping center and buy comic books, bazooka gum and red hots. The neighborhood was pretty good.. I never had to worry about getting robbed or anything. I don't know how it is now though.  (Jul 27, 2009 | post #960)

I had a paper route on Morton st from Madison Ave to Chapel Hill Drive. I also delivered on Hale St around Lincoln ave. This was around 1968-69.  (Jul 27, 2009 | post #959)

Hi Kathie, I grew up in Brentwood around the same time you did. I remember the Jack In The Box on the corner of Washington and Suffolk Avenues but I don't think it's there anymore. I also recall the 5 & 10 down the road. I used to buy little toys there when I was a boy. I also worked at Grants as a short order cook around 1972... perhaps it was me that made that terrible liver.  (Jul 26, 2009 | post #955)

Slap Who? I already forgot about him. On to more important things... like what this forum is supposed to be about. Now that it's summertime, who remembers visiting the restaurant counter inside the air conditioned Grants Department Store during those hot summer days? When I was a kid we used to ride our bikes to that place, sit at the counter and order up an ice cream. A few years later one of my first jobs was working behind that very same counter, serving ice cream to the next gang of youngsters.  (Jul 16, 2009 | post #940)

Yes, I remember those rides that came around. One of them was called 'The Whip.' When we were kids we used to sing this little song every time the Bungalow Bar truck came along: "Bungalow Bar, tastes like tar, the more you eat it, the sicker you are." Funny how I remembered that one.  (Jul 14, 2009 | post #934)

HI Candy, Yes, I also remember going to the Sunrise Drive Inn and playing on those rides. Remember how they used to turn the lights on and off as a message that the movie was about to start? And do you remember those funny animated food cartoons enticing folks to spend money at the concessions? Who could forget that 'clock' ticking down the time on the screen until the next feature was about to start.  (Jul 8, 2009 | post #920)

Hi Randy, Yeah, I remember the area you're talking about. However, I don't think we can blame ourselves about leaving the neighborhood.. moving from one's hometown is very common. What becomes of a neighborhood has more to do with the people that live there rather than those who don't.  (Jul 7, 2009 | post #910)

I agree Randy. So... getting back to Brentwood, I was from the North end off of Washington Ave. I lived there from 1958 until the year I graduated in '74. I had a lot of fairly nice memories of the town.  (Jul 7, 2009 | post #905)

I agree. This 'slap chop' character is obviously someone with a chip on his shoulder who craves attention. Unfortunately this person found what he's looking for by spewing bigoted, racist remarks on this forum. Best to ignore him.  (Jul 1, 2009 | post #849)

I'm ashamed that SC claims to be from Brentwood. Since I've moved from Brentwood I've traveled and have lived all over the country and bigots like SC seem to be everywhere. From now on folks let's simply ignore all his posts, or better yet, I'll take it upon myself to report this person to moderator. Nobody needs people like this. Toby  (Jun 30, 2009 | post #840)
