Drinking Age - San Francisco, CA

Responsible enough to knowingly risk your life at war, but not to have a beer? Are you serious?  (Sep 30, 2012 | post #12)

Drinking Age - San Francisco, CA

As someone under 21, I have a very good view of the breakdown with the drinking age. At 18, People are treated as full adults in every way, shape, and form, except with drinking. Despite the illegality, they are even more OK with drinking then they might have been before 18. The problem, though, is this: below 21, there is no tangible second line of defense against underage drinking. The infrastructure is set up so that those who are over 18 can get alcohol just as easily as those over 21. There is, however, nothing stopping this infrastructure to supply those under 18, and it does. As a recent high school graduate, I have witnessed and experienced that it is just as easy for someone 16 years of age to obtain massive amounts of alcohol as someone who is 21 or older, with barely if any increase in price. Finally, it is important to mention that every single one of the members of the Presidential Commission Against Drunk Driving have flipped opinions, saying "the 21 year old drinking age was in experiment, it failed." (that's paraphrased, don't want to look up the exact quote now.)  (Sep 30, 2012 | post #11)
