Health Care - Greensboro, NC

Since most of this healthcare reform doesn't go into effect until 2014 & no actual monies have been spent, then why not support the principles of the policy. Plenty of time to tweak it so that cost don't increase for healthcare insurance, people are given affordable options, and the healthcare act doesn't add to the national deficit and remain deficit neutral as President Obama with the help of the non-partisan OMB committee has stated it must be. The arguments about "socialized " medicine is another fear & loathing red-herring. Those underinsured or not insured will have options to choose from a pool insurance policies. The one thing I probably against is the mandate that everyone have a healthcare insurance policy, but I don't like the idea that I have to pay for someone without insurance everytime they end up in emergency room because that means I have to pay for that visit! If the government can subsidized the hospital for that visit that would be better, but only as long as they have the money to pay for it! And as an aside note, doctors and physicians should be paid a salary not fee per service basis. How many times have you gone into your doctors office for a routine examination and end up being subjected or at least suggested for tests or referrals for things you don't need? This is some of the reasons why some people's insurance don't fully cover these tests and end up paying more out-of-pocket than they expected! Highly skilled doctors, specialists are exceptions to fee per service, but a general physician should not be getting rich off of you. They are there to do no harm and promote prevention & care, not because being a doctor is a lucrative career.  (Dec 18, 2010 | post #19)

Gay Marriage - Greensboro, NC

The Bible does not say anything about or against same-sex marriage only the Catholic/Christian Church aka the organized religious institutions that sometimes have corporate and government influence affecting all of our lives! The government should not be involved in whether two people of the same gender get married as with the general society. A gay marriage does not impact anyone's life directly or change your beliefs. For those people that say that they wouldn't want their children or children in general being influenced by this "lifestyle choice", then to them I would say "too late!" Have you heard of the internet? Facebook? Twitter? My Space? TV? You Tube? Texting? Unless you live in a cave or in Amish country there really no way to prevent children from being influenced from anything in the 21st Century! They will grow & learn about themselves, just as some of us adults have about who we really are and eventually be true to thine self! If they discover they are gay or lesbian and find someone whom they really care about and want to marry when they are all grown-up then that's special and it's nobody's damn business including the church's. However, if the church wishes to ban it for the sake of it's parishioners faith/beliefs and religious morality than so be it, however the state or government shouldn't deny gay marriage nor should it force the church to change it's position. But don't say the Bible says so! It only refers to homosexual acts not homosexuality. It says nothing about homosexual marriage, therefore that shouldn't be an argument against it. There are plenty things in the Bible that Catholics/Christia ns shouldn't do but they partake in it daily. Let's not parch and parcel what's in the word to fit only certain things that's okay and not others because of fear & loathing. Otherwise every Christian out there that has eaten at a Red Lobster and had shellfish would have sinned! So don't caste stones, look at yourself in the mirror and be truthful, and don't judge for least ye be judge and everybody can live together happily ever after! This is about respect for individuality, not a blaspheme against the Bible, or the morality of the church. Marriage in itself does not necessarily need a spiritual or holy blessing, all it requires is a registration license, a fee, and maybe some taxes paid. Finally, if gay & lesbian want to get married for benefits like healthcare & rights of survivorship, etc. like heterosexuals then why not? Let them also have the experience of getting a divorce too! It's only fair!  (Dec 18, 2010 | post #72)

Immigration - Greensboro, NC

AZ immigration law is too broad and clearly steps over the line into racial profiling. Having said that, I do agree there needs to be a clear immigration policy that includes a pathway to citizenship and it needs to be enforced, but not in the way that the State of Arizona has enacted. I understand they are a border state and our borders need to be protected(especial ly against foreign & domestic threats of terrorism), but not an immigration law that is so absolute it's like living in a "police-state " or under Martial law because you happen to be of Hispanic descent and you look like you might be here illegally! That's the problem I have with this law. So, bottomline is to protect our borders, establish a clear pathway to citizenship, and enforce the current Federal laws on immigration. Stop random profiling and what I believe is a violation of the 4th Amendment of the Constitution. No one enjoys it when your rights and freedoms are being violated whether you are natural or naturalized citizen of the U.S.  (Dec 18, 2010 | post #11)

"Predictable & Consistent" says Richard Burr

I couldn't agree more with what Sen.Richard Burr said after the 1st televised senatorial debate between him and NC Sect. of State Elaine Marshall sponsored by the NC Broadcaster Assoc. He said as his final statement during that debate that he will promise to be the same "predictable and consistent" person his constituents have come to know. Yes, that's right. Sen. Burr is predictable and consistent in saying "No" to every bill that could benefit his constituency in the name of being fiscally conservative. He voted "no" to small business jobs bill. He voted "no" to extending unemployment benefit insurance. But to be fair, he didn't always vote "no", sometimes he voted "yes" with his GOP buddies. He voted "yes" for TARP to help bail out banks to big to fail(the 1st time). But don't forget he called his wife to make sure that she withdrew all the money of their accounts before the financial meltdown hit & affected everyone else. Pure and simple, Sen. Burr has been an obstructionist when policies that would've benefited everyone in his constituency for jobs & growth, and he has force fed the rhetoric of being fiscally responsible to justify it all. He went to Washington DC as a House Representative, but he has done less as a U.S. Senator and he has lost his connection to the people of his district & North Carolinians.  (Oct 16, 2010 | post #1)

I'm a Democrat, and I'm going to support BJ Barnes again. Without his leadership there wouldn't be a new city/county jail facility built to relieve the overcrowded old one we have now. We needed the bond referendum to be approved so that it would be possible, as Greensboro continues to grow.  (Oct 16, 2010 | post #6)

Marshall is a grassroots candidate that didn't receive support from the "establishmen t" DNC or DSCC! They supported Cal Cunningham. Elaine is plain spoken and very candid about the issues, especially if she disagrees with some policies in the Obama administration.  (Oct 16, 2010 | post #326)
