Ticked off! @ O-town haters and dingbats in uniform

"Thanks to the dingbat fireman who made the statement "a uniform makes you very important." I work for Disney and also wear a uniform. I dress as Goofy." I think Goofy is very important. :)  (Yesterday | post #15)

Volusia teachers: Fed up with cuts

While I sympathize with my Volusia colleagues, I just want to know where they think the money might come from. Okay, you cut a few administrators, but then what? You need more teachers, but what classrooms will you put them in? You couldn't reopen one of the closed schools; the money put back in from administrative cuts couldn't cover the operating budget. If you spread it around to all the teachers in the district (in the form of a pay raise), wouldn't it be a negligible amount? I think this a problem without solutions.  (Saturday | post #11)

We think: World needs to know if Chinese gymnasts were eligible

The official documents that were provided during the games said they were eligible. But who makes the official documents? The government. So yeah, good luck to the IOC.  (Saturday Sep 27 | post #8)

Fleeing robbery suspect fires on police in Orlando-area Walmart

I think they are going to be charging him with the attempted murder of a police officer.  (Thursday Sep 25 | post #7)

14-year-old dies after walking into path of car while texting o...

It's very sad this family has lost a loved one. And I also feel bad for the driver, because this was clearly an accident, and she will have to live with this for the rest of her life.  (Tuesday Sep 23 | post #124)

14-year-old dies after walking into path of car while texting o...

One of the youngsters I tutor has a special kind of phone. A parent can pre-program up to 5 numbers in it. Now, I think this is a pretty good idea, because what if something happens while a kid is in transit between one place or another? Or one parent thought the other was picking the child up from school, and the poor kid is stuck there? I personally wouldn't want my child going to a stranger's house and asking to use the phone. But yeah, I see ten-year-olds with Razrs, and my reaction is basically "Um, why?"  (Tuesday Sep 23 | post #123)

Vote 'no' on Amendment 2

Actually, I can think of several public schools that allow students to meet before and after school for religious purposes. My across-the-hall neighbor when I taught in public school was the sponsor for the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), and also hosted the before-school Bible study. Since these were student-led clubs meeting during non-instructional hours, the school was okay with it.  (Saturday Sep 20 | post #13)

Palm Bay teen accused of pouring scalding water on girl

Where is the parent's *brain*, leaving a 4-year-old with someone who has a known history of violent behaviour? Oh, and hurting a four-year-old who insulted you? Yeah, you're a real bad- **** .  (Saturday Sep 20 | post #27)

Florida teen faces charge after school dean is hit

This is actually why most school personnel (including teachers) will not get involved in breaking up a fight. If we get injured, there's no way to prove it was intentional. If a student is injured in the course of breaking up a fight, we're the ones suspended, fired, and/or sued.  (Saturday Sep 20 | post #5)

With dire budget cuts, class size is on the table

Oh there's huge profits to be made on selling your textbook to Florida full-stop. (Read _The Language Police_ if you want the dirt on textbook adoption, sensitivity committees, and national testing question banks.) The industry has "USA Today"-ed textbooks, which is why they weigh 8 pounds; slick presentation takes up a lot of room. I'm at a private school and our English classes are starting to move to the Norton Anthologies: cheaper than a hardcover high school text, more challenging literature, and a lack of unnecessary crud.  (Saturday Sep 20 | post #30)

With dire budget cuts, class size is on the table

I find it interesting that, despite this "class size amendment," some of my public school colleagues still have 30-35 students. In academic classes. (We won't even get into my drama teacher friend who has a total enrollment of 160 students...)  (Saturday Sep 20 | post #27)

As families flee Florida, kids vanish from classes

That was pretty much my thought. I realize they moved there for the husband's job, but the cost of living is at least twice what it is around here.  (Tuesday Sep 16 | post #302)

MTV dust-up shows abstinence is in vogue

Yes. Yes it would. However, it's Howard Stern, so it might just be one big chain-yank. Hard to tell with him.  (Sunday Sep 14 | post #44)
