Villaraigosa to launch new anti-truancy initiative

Some parents actually do try to keep their children in school. One family member was driving her son to school--he'd walk in the front gate, slip out a side gate and go home. His mother asked for help to keep her son in school. Nothing happened. Now both of her sons have no diploma. So what's to be done for the parents who actually TRY, but are having trouble keeping their children in school?  (Oct 10, 2010 | post #4)

Molester lures girl at Calabasas pool

Escape, I'll give you a thumbs-up on that! Place the blame where it belongs--on the man who tried to attack this girl.  (Sep 19, 2010 | post #47)

And how would you know that? The man hasn't been arrested yet.  (Sep 19, 2010 | post #72)

You're right, Jack. Most papers don't publish the victim's personal information for her protection. Even the wire services leave the victim's name out.  (Sep 19, 2010 | post #71)

You're blaming the victim, Mav. The young lady could have done everything she was supposed to do. She could have taken every precaution she knew to take. For all we know, she could have been followed home, or she was being watched.  (Sep 19, 2010 | post #70)

Boxer and Feinstein, I can vote out. The state politicians, I can vote out. Hahn and the Mayor, no (I don't live in LA).  (Sep 19, 2010 | post #19)

Loss of film, TV production a 'crisis'

Climate is great. Paperwork/permit situation is crummy. Other cities and states are offering incentives for companies to film there.  (Sep 19, 2010 | post #31)

Lawyers talk next move in Polanski case

IIRC, Polanski's not an American citizen. And the conviction wasn't for rape, it was for a lesser charge (I've forgotten exactly that was). He faced a lesser sentence, had he stayed here to do the time. Under immigration law, however, Polanski might have been deported once his sentence was served. Now his lawyers are trying to get him sentenced in abstentia (which I don't think has been done in this country). Failing that, it's getting him back here for a hearing--and he'd be arrested for skipping his original sentencing as soon as he got here.  (Jan 6, 2010 | post #4)

Loss of film, TV production a 'crisis'

As I see it, the tax and paperwork situations are part of the problem. Some residents are less-than-thrilled about having an entire film crew parked in their neighborhoods. I read once about a Food Network program that is produced in Georgia. The original set was in an actual house, and the neighbors were not happy with a television crew continually parked in the area. The program is now shot in a commercial building. Not only does there have to be some give on the part of government, but if location-shoothing MUST be done, it could be done without aggravating the residents.  (Jan 6, 2010 | post #28)

Ridley-Thomas under fire for $700K office remodel

OK....suppose we compare Ridley-Thomas' office to those of his fellow Supervisors. Think the Supervisors would open the books on their remodeling costs?  (Jan 6, 2010 | post #146)

You'd have to screen them--you don't want violent prisoners or possible flight-risks working out in public. Then there are the guards (which need to be paid for) to supervise. Would the Supervisors approve that?  (Dec 28, 2009 | post #144)

Villaraigosa shouldn't mind L.A.'s business

And (as Doug would most likely know) there's been a considerable chunk of the entertainment industry that isn't working in LA (or the state) at the moment. Production has shifted elsewhere--and other places are giving them incentives to go there. How many times have I seen ads promoting Michigan as a business destination? This was one of the issues for the District 2 Council election. One of the candidates claimed that she worked to keep media production here. And the parking meters...yes, there are parking meters in the beach cities (not far from where I live). And our company has to pay for business licenses for several cities (one office, but we do work in several cities). Four of the cities we deal with--Los Angeles included--base the business tax on revenues.  (Dec 18, 2009 | post #61)

That, Slug, is because there ARE some people who are 'mad as hell' and simply don't see the reasoning behind a $700K office remodel, given the present economic situation. If you had a company that was several million dollars in debt, would you get a $700K remodel? Or would you be working towards getting out of debt?  (Dec 18, 2009 | post #114)
