Here's the scanner update: This weekend was tough. Again, just struggled with a loose car. Kasey said the front was good pretty much all night, so they struggled to make it tighter without messing that up. He was flying during the middle part, but Kasey asked for more of what they did and more didn't help! They worked hard, though, no doubt...just a struggle with that car! He yelled for someone to calculate if they were still 10th in points (near the end), when Kenny confirmed that they should be, he seemed to relax a little. The BEST conversation of the night (and one of his best ever!) was when they were discussing the huge hole in his roof from the Montoya accident. I tried to get it down as best I could, here's the convo: Kasey: “Something flew off of one of them, and landed on my roof. It made a hole in the roof about 5 inches long.” Kenny: “Get some tape ready, guys.” Kasey: "I'm fine as long as it doesn't screw the car up. It’s cooler in here already!” Kenny: [something about not thinking it'll hurt the car] Kasey: "We're gonna find out...it’s like a banana that’s been peeled open. Right above where the passenger’s head would be." Kole: “Is the piece in your car?” Kasey: “"No, I looked around but I can't look far enough back. I saw it when it was in the air, it was BIG!” Kole: “Yeah, 10-4!” Kasey: “I’m glad it landed on the passenger and not the driver!” Kenny: “Yeah, that’s for sure!” He also gave his crew a very sweet pep talk before the race, thanking them for all their hard work and not letting the drama affect them all season. He was okay. Every adjustment seemed to help the car, but with the lack of cautions they really didn't have much time to do MORE of that to get it better. His engineer said on Twitter after the race that the car was better than it showed in the result. They really just had a problem with getting it to turn the way he wanted it, but they did get it somewhat better each time. Kasey only swore once, when he said he couldn't get down to the white effin' line! But that's really the only time he lost his temper. They usually struggle at Phoenix, and this race was better than some of their past ones! He also commented to Kenny about how great the engines have been restarting in the last two races, when they've struggled with being able to GO all year. It was a decent day. YES! I AGREE! I'm so tired of Dodge's issues and the lack of power. Bring on the Yates horsepower! I'm looking forward to being able to GO on restarts again! At least we can be confident that they'll make it to the end, too. AJ did good in the Ford (as did Elliott)...ran top 15 most of the day with it. Looking forward to see how he runs in the last two races, so we can see where we stand going into the deal. RK, no problem on the scanner updates! You can count on me. :) (Monday Nov 9 | post #9)
Nah, they weren't really getting into it. Kasey just said he was blowing up and Kenny told him to check his gauges and whatnot, and Kasey said he wasn't going to quit til it gave up on him. When they were talking about fuel mileage at the end, Kasey asked if it would be using less fuel now that it was down on power. Kenny said he really didn't know for sure and told him to save gas just in case. They got a little loud, but I don't think it was in a fighting sort of way, because they weren't arguing. They were going to be 6 laps short before the engine died down, and I can't remember what lap he ran out on but I think he ended up saving a couple of laps anyway. He was pretty good on the scanner yesterday, considering. He didn't really get frustrated at all, even though the car wasn't the best. The only time he got mad was when someone blocked him from getting down to pit road. But otherwise, he was fine. Encouraging his crew and giving a lot of feedback to Kenny. The car was just too loose all day, that's what they were fighting. (Monday Nov 9 | post #6)
Via his Twitter, he says the car should be good tomorrow. Said he had a couple fast cars this weekend, but one was cut short. So, I'm not too concerned with the practice chart anymore! Haha. (Saturday Nov 7 | post #3)
AJ did. That's why he had to pit (and therefore was lapped). The debris didn't have anything to do with the contact though, because AJ had already pitted. (Friday Nov 6 | post #18)
Yeah, people asked his PR about it on her Twitter page and ESPN/ABC told her that they were "short on time" and that their reporters were by the care center and in VL. So Kasey just went straight to the media center. As for the scanner, we've established that he HATES the R5 engine, haha. Kole told him that the 78 was blowing up, to which Kasey replies "must be nice". He also called AJ an inappropriate name when AJ was having problems...pretty sure they don't get along! He also asked Kole to make sure he told him which lines were the longest, and which lines moved the fastest/best so he could figure out where to go. I took down a few of his quotes: Kole: "Whole field single file." Kasey: "That's crazy how that works." Kole: "Yeah, 10-4!" Kasey: "I guess cuz it's cool outside." Kasey: "God, this is boring. I'm trying to learn something out here...don't know what, but I am." When Newman wrecked, Kasey asked if he was okay. At first I don't think anyone knew, so they just told him they think so. After he got out, Kenny reassured Kasey that he was fine and that he had to be cut out. Kasey then made some comments about how high Ryan sits in his car...but I didn't get the quote directly. Kale was there this weekend on the pit box, and so after the race Kenny commented: "I guess Kale gets to come back to some more races!" and Kasey's like "Yeah." It was cute! After the race, they were all talking about how crazy it was and whatnot, and his engineer Keith said "I think I'm gonna go throw up!" Haha. But anyway, he was upbeat overall yesterday. They did good! (Nov 2, 2009 | post #13)
Not sure Kasey was helping AJ, but they got together. He lost the draft early because he had no one to push him...and as we know, he can't go on restarts. So, with nobody behind him to push him, he was screwed. I think he would've won had it gone green. I believe Joey was committed to him. He had a deal with Jeff that he & Joey would push Kasey if he decided to make a move on the last lap, but as we saw Jeff ran out of gas before they even restarted. I'm pretty sure Joey would've done it still. But, second is nothing to be upset about! I'm quite happy with it...and it's nice to see a fresh face in VL with Jamie. (Nov 1, 2009 | post #11)
The good thing is that qualifying doesn't mean anything here (although I'm worried about the people he's going to start near! haha). It's a good thing that they found the problem now rather than in the race! I'm sure he'll be fine. (Oct 31, 2009 | post #3)
Haha yes! I was cracking up. It was definitely good hearing him upbeat. I guess it's because the car wasn't half bad all day, it just got demolished from the damn tires! (Oct 26, 2009 | post #7)
On the last caution, he came down pit road (he didn't pit though) and this is how the convo went down: Kasey: "Do you want me to just keep going?" Kenny: "Just keep going." Kasey: "I just wanted to surprise you guys!" Kenny: "You did a good job (laugh). We were like ‘what?!’" Some other things were that he wondered why Scott Speed even bothers to race, because he doesn't act like he wants to. And on the last restart he was like "I'm gonna hang back and be lapped traffic". (Oct 26, 2009 | post #4)
It SUCKED! But it was good to hear them laughing and joking around on the scanner despite the bad day. Kasey was pretty funny! All I want is for him to finish in the top 10 in points. I just want to see him at the banquet! (Oct 25, 2009 | post #2)
Vibration in the right front tire is what happened. He was basically just trying to take care of it at the end. The car was amazing, and I think he would've had something for Jimmie had he not had the vibration. (Oct 17, 2009 | post #6)
Only Kasey and Elliott have been using the R6. Elliott has been using it since Indy. Kasey, AJ, and Reed all have the R5 this weekend while Elliott obviously still had the R6. (Sep 25, 2009 | post #23)
He probably could find a way out, but he won't. He'll stay to finish his contract for sure. Beyond that, it's anybody's guess. (Sep 25, 2009 | post #5)
