Body Found In Deep River Pond -- Courant.com

Steve, I agree with you. I actually signed on to be an editor of a page, and then realized some of my posts were not posted. I stepped down and I will be getting my own blog, without the monitoring. But this should be in a different post, since this one is to honor the memory of a very special young man... Devin Gaines. He will be missed.  (Jul 13, 2007 | post #74)

I have to say YEA that I feel rather suspicious as well about this... and I regret to say I agree. It would be apalling to think there was any foul play, but as we all know people can do things to others out of jealousy... I hope there is a thorough investigation. I heard the police already have ascertained that this death was ruled as an accident. How can any one investigator come to a conclusion that quickly? If there were autopsies on the family that drowned in the van in Beardsley Zoo pond, than I hope there would be more of an investigation here in this case. Sorry if I have offended anyone, but I feel his life was just to important to just guess upon. I know I am not the only one who feels uneasy about this.  (Jul 11, 2007 | post #67)

Body Found In Deep River Pond -- Courant.com

I heard of a young man that drowned from Stamford yesterday, and this morning realized who in fact it was that had lost his life. While I am not saying that someone who has achieved less than Devin, (Most of us), would not be greatly missed, I will say it is a far more impacting to lose not just a great inspiration, a great scholar, an over-comer, an over achiever, but most importantly in my eyes, he was an African American. Transcending the views that Black people are not capable. Wrong... Devin was a shining example. I never knew him personally, but I have read about him and I feel a great sense of loss today. My prayers and thoughts go out to his family.  (Jul 11, 2007 | post #66)

Are you inferring to there being a "non truth" here? Is racism dead and gone and no one notified me?  (Jun 15, 2007 | post #19)

Teen's Tattoo Tips Police To Warrant For His Arrest

Wayne.... you my dear are of a brilliant mind. A Failure to Appear can be for many crimes, and I assure you if the courts deemed him to be a violent member of society, he would of been locked up and not given the opportunity to FAIL to appear in court. With that said, I am not at all looking for conspiracies since as we know through statistics, young minority and low income men and women are "overrepresen ted" in school supensions/expulsi ons, special education, and harrassment and detaining in juvenile facilities/jails. No conspiracy, just facts, undisputable facts.  (Jun 15, 2007 | post #17)

South End plan could face lengthy review

The City of Stamford seems intent on revitalization and urban renewal and has sold out many parts of Stamford to developers such as in the South End. Just take a look at the Stamford Urban Transitway,(you can google it and get info). This plan, according to the City of Stamford website is to: "Provide a direct link south of the railroad tracks to the Stamford Transportation Center area from Elm Street, to improve traffic operations, safety, efficiency, and encourage public transportation and non-motorized modes of transportation to address current and future traffic needs." Although I'm not an expert, you can plainly see many things in this plan that are in contempt. First off, the development south of the plan had been factored in along with this plan, such as the Petro site buyout and the old Northest Utilities area sellout to name a couple. Secondly, many properties were taken by Eminent Domain in the name of this project and businesses and families lost out on the deal when it came to the money they recieved for their property. Thirdly, there is an issue of gentrification, def inition following.... Thanks to Wikipedia.com: "Gentrificati on, or urban gentrification, is a phenomenonin which low-cost, physically deteriorated neighborhoods undergo physical renovation and an increase in property values, along with an influx of wealthier residents who may displace the prior residents." Fourth and I think the most important to the community, the areas that are being dug up for construction, are some of the most contaminated sites in town and when they dig further and further into the ground, they dig further and further into potential carcinogens that can permiate the air and cause illness for individuals in their future. There needs to be measures in place to prevent the neighborhoods and people who work in the area from not ingesting this toxic dust or any other chemical. Asthma rates in the South End are very high to begin with. The South End, I agree needs to be cleaned up a bit, but please do so responsibly. That's all. The only place that is safe from not getting taken or knocked down in the South End... is Woodland Cemetery.  (Jun 13, 2007 | post #2)

NAACP seeks security video from Southwood melee

Well then maybe we need to DELETE some of these "organization s" and members who run them. We need effective, thorough leadership in Stamford. Not grandstanders who vy for the spotlight, one over the other.  (Jun 11, 2007 | post #3)

Why wasn't the whole tape played?

Phyllis, The worst thing that can happen to the citizens, moreso than the incident itself, is everyone shrinking back and not speaking up and demanding justice. Change does not take place overnight, so it crucial for the community to keep up the rhetoric on the subject and not let it die. Stamford has a 30 day rule. Let 30 days go by and most people will shut up,shut down and fade back. Just look at other issues and incidents of the past. We are heading into an election year come 2008, so now would be the time to get things rolling so come November 2008, our voices will be loud and clear!!  (Jun 11, 2007 | post #15)

NAACP vote to be held amid dispute

Well... your depiction is funny... she opposed Jadakiss for his lyrics. And yes... she is running for the Presidency of the NAACP. For all intents and purposes... she is calling herself attention with the Southwood Square issue, under a certain someone'(s) guidance from the NAACP. She, along with a very specific cohort... are responsible for the change in the by-laws, in stating that you can become a member the DAY OF the election and inturn vote. Right in the face of National and it's specific laws. Which states that you have to be bonafide member for at least 30 days in order to even consider voting for elections.  (Jun 10, 2007 | post #4)

NAACP vote to be held amid dispute

I must say I agree... If the organization cannot get itself together, then it becomes sterile to the citizens and the community. There is to much "back biting" within the higher ranks to be of any good to the community. How effective were they with the Southwood incident. They demanded the tape and then allowed the Stamford Police to show their side in a very "biased" depiction of what happened, never demanding the other side to be shown, and the whole story be told in its entirety. There is more than one videotape, since there are more than one camera. Where are they now that the South End and the West Side youth and citizens are being further harrassed by the police? I have heard the police are stepping up their antics since the incident. Where are you NAACP? Ms. Eaton? Mr. Bryant? Yoohooo........... ......  (Jun 9, 2007 | post #2)

18 Legal Age for Adult Jurisdiction

In the states of North Carolina, New York and Connecticut, when you or your child reaches the age of 16 and gets into trouble, they will get sent to an ADULT prison. Raising the age of jurisdiction will ensure our young adults get the proper attention at the appropriate time. Most youth at the age of 16 and 17 fall through the "proverbial " crack in the system, where there are limited or NO resources or services available, leaving our youth in the hands of the system that will place them in an adult jail. The voices of many of our youth and families have spoken and they are demanding better care for our children. Our children who, for as little an offense of not attending school, will enter into a facility that will expose them to physical, verbal and sexual abuse. Our bill that proposes to Raise the Age of jurisdiction to 18 is currently in "special session" waiting for the budget to be finalized. Creating hope for the future of young adults and families who will have more choices for deterrance and rehabilitation through the system. Thank you to all who support this bill.  (Jun 8, 2007 | post #1)
