Is the Columbus music scene legitimate

FM and Satellite Radio are not the sameI can't tune into 89.7 FM via my satellite radio. I have it and just reviewed the channel list online and can not find a station named "89.7 FM" either. After looking either, it's just 2 older ladies with a podcast and KLAS is just a Shoutcast stream. There is no KLAS in LA (http://en.wikiped ia.org/wiki/Catego ry:Radio_stations_ in_Los_Angeles,_Ca lifornia) and it's online only. Apparently they sell XM radios or something and that's why Steph & Jen think they're broadcasted on SiriusXM but that's not accurate. I can't figure out why they put in a frequency in the title of the station since they don't broadcast on one and I can't quite figure out just what American Radio Network is. http://www.america nradionetwork.com/ They feel the need to point out on their main page "WE ARE NOT A SCAM!" which leads me to believe.. they are. I just can't figure out what the scam is (or isn't). They claim King Biscuit's Flower Hour is one of their shows but that's not true. Same with the Dr. Demento Show. In fact, this is all I've found on the American Radio Network, which KLAS "89.7 FM", is apart of: http://www.laweekl y.com/2011-06-16/n ews/american-radio -network-under-att ack/ Strange. Very strange indeed. Either way, Will. I'll tune into the Shoutcast stream but I don't think you're on FM or XM radio tonight, buddy. Sorry.  (Jul 25, 2013 | post #2550)

Yes, yes... The music! Kyle Wilson will be at The Loft this Friday. He performed at CutBait Music Festival and recently released his new album, Let The Time Pass, which will be available to purchase at the show. http://www.fivepoi ntmusic.com/kylewi lson/  (Jul 25, 2013 | post #2543)

No, Will. It's not. DIY is a necessary ethic to have. I'm just saying, everything Artemis Records "releases " is a group of friends who are doing it themselves. There's no genuine record label with genuine distribution and promotional capabilities. It's friends. DIY. And there's nothing wrong with that, again. I enjoyed the Truck Stop Woman video. That song always cracks me up and the video was definitely humorous as well. Y'all did it yourselves and have something fun to go along with the music you're proud of. Hell, I think it's cool y'all have a "label". The open mic community has a tv show and a festival, so why not add it to the mix? That way Artemis Records can get a percentage of all of the tens of records sold! ;) jk  (Jul 25, 2013 | post #2540)

It's still just a name and still very DIY. A lawsuit doesn't add legitimacy to the entity as a profitable record label, just proves that he's used the name prior to someone else. It doesn't mean for a second that he made $100,000 from the record label prior to suing for it. Does he have a distribution deal? Are any Artemis Records releases in stores, outside of maybe local coffee shops and such? Can I go to an FYE or Best Buy in Little Rock and purchase any Artemis Records release, since the website claims to have distribution? Or even distributed to independent record stores throughout the country? I'm just saying... It's very DIY, not a real label, and very much just friends helping each other. The same way I've described the open mic community, which this "label" IS apart of, as not a legitimate "music scene" but group of friends who help each other, support each other, and enjoy each other. There's nothing wrong with it. The only issue is when it's passed off as something it isn't.  (Jul 25, 2013 | post #2535)

Best" is subjective so I won't argue that they are or aren't "currently the best" band in the area, but BCR is definitely NOT the most popular. Stereomonster is probably the most popular band in this town and definitely the biggest drawing local name. If not them, it would honestly be Whisky Bent or one of the other cover bands. If going by record sales, it would undoubtedly be Joey Allcorn. BCR is no where close, though. That's just ludicrous to even THINK that much less to publicly suggest it. I think I spoke before about delusions within the open mic community... Stereomonster hasn't played Doo-Nanny to my knowledge. They did film a video at the site, but not during Doo-Nanny. I fully stand by my statement that no one of any real stature locally has played Doo-Nanny. The open mic community does NOT run or define local music regardless of what y'all think. BCR might be the best and most popular to y'all, but looking at it realistically (who draws, who sells records, who has a crowd singing along, etc.) they don't compete at all. I enjoy bluegrass though and enjoy their music. I hate feeling like I'm bashing them but when you try to misrepresent facts, in some sort of effort to argue against what I said (which IS fact, whether open mic'ers want to accept it or not) then I will put it bluntly.  (Jul 25, 2013 | post #2528)

It's their thing. Shrug. I really don't associate Doo-Nanny with the local music scene, though. I just liken it to a backwoods Burning Man put on by hillbillys and think it's cool it made ANY section of ANY newspaper or magazine. Local involvement in Doo-Nanny is pretty slim, it's more of an Asheville artist event (with a guy from Muscle Shoals booking the bands now) that just happens to be nearby. The stage is pretty open for anyone on Friday and Sunday afternoons, and because of friendships with Butch, some local people have performed there. No one of any real stature that's involved in local music, though. The outside talent is good, though. The Pollies have played there (who share a member with The Alabama Shakes) and Doc Dailey and Magnolia Devil have played there a few times. Both REALLY good Muscle Shoals bands. I saw one amazing band there 3 years ago but can't remember the name. The Mad Tea Party and Screaming Js are fun and decent bands. I go for the good time and fact I can camp and party with my friends around a huge bon fire. I've always had a really fun time at Doo-Nanny even though I haven't been the past 2 years. I think the problem on here with Doo-Nanny is simply the fact that Will's promoted it. I just say, come to it one time with an open mind on a Saturday night (the locals don't usually play then, at least never when I've been) and have a ball. It's not the best festival I've been to but it's something fun to do in the area, especially if you go with the right people.  (Jul 23, 2013 | post #2517)

Artemis Records = "label" that another local musician, who's associated with Will, Henry, etc. "runs". It's a name and not much else. Still very DIY.  (Jul 23, 2013 | post #2515)

Kyle Wilson is an Alexander City native but he recorded his album here in Columbus and used several local musicians for studio work. Check out this link of him on Birmingham's ABC affiliate yesterday: http://www.abc3340 .com/video?autoSta rt=true&topVid eoCatNo=default &clipId=908170 1  (Jul 12, 2013 | post #2437)
