Dozens in Texas Town Report Seeing UFO

Well, I'm not going to call the American public stupid. Reasonable people can disagree - my aim is to do so agreeably as nothing is gained when commentary turns into a poo flinging fest. Ufology suffers from having a very high evidentiary bar set, and rightly so, since as the adage goes, extraordinary claims require extraordiary proof. There are ufologists who will swallow any story of a sighting without question, despite perfecly mundane explanations and this muddies the waters and feeds the skeptics who claim that therefore all sightings are misidentifications of the mundane or hoaxes. And that's a shame because there are some compelling cases (Trindade, McMinnville, Bentwaters, D.C. 1952, Belium 1989) which deserve more thourough inquiry. Ufologists would do well to be more skeptical. And skeptics would do well to follow their own advice. Swamp gas? C'mon!  (Jan 16, 2008 | post #284)

It is natural to joke and join in with the tribe's jeers when when confronted with something out of the ordinary. Human behavior dictates that it is more important to be perceived as belonging to the group than it is to challenge the old paradigms. But why then joke when confronted with good evidence, such as the Trindade Island case then complain later that nobody will give you serious answers to what you claim are valid questions?  (Jan 16, 2008 | post #274)

It's warm in Mexico. Send the illegals there. Even if they're illegal Poles, Irish or Pakistanians. Problem solved.  (Oct 1, 2007 | post #3)

The Next Crisis: Crazy Boyfriends --

Women are stupid. They complain that guys won't stay on the porch, but if some dumb schmuck is willing to, then they don't want them around anymore. Men are stupid. After they get their milk and cookie, they just want to get out of there, but if some other guy is cued up next in line for that same milk and cookie, the guy wants her back suddenly. Stupid humans.  (Sep 28, 2007 | post #6)

Tolerating A Climate Of Hostility --

It was a cartoon. People with low self esteem pen outrageous cartoons, and people with even lower opinions of themselves cling to outrage in order to give their otherwise empty lives some meaning. At the end of the day, all the fuss will have been about cartoon, and those making the fuss will still hate themselves for having allowed themselves to be so easily cranked up at the pleasure of the cartoonist.  (Sep 27, 2007 | post #17)

A Long Way From `South Park' --

No, the act of watching is not the act of thinking. Thinking about what you are watching is, however, and South Park, besides being incredibly f*cking funny, provides much food for thought. Mindlessness is a character flaw of certain spectators, not a consequence of spectating. As for people or groups that you feel have not been adequately slammed, if you don't watch, then how would you know?  (Sep 27, 2007 | post #8)

Hola, SolToro! --

Have you tried the "Platino "? It will stand up to the silvers by El Charro Silver, Herradura, Don Julio...and yet it is a Jose Cuervo product. That is, if you like silvers. (and I sometimes like a break from reposados and anejos.)  (Sep 27, 2007 | post #3)

Blackwater Sparks An Internal Battle --

You need to wake up. You cannot win unless you kill and destroy the enemy utterly. Nothing less will make the enemy cry mercy. We will never win through policing. The current administration is hellbent on maintaining a police presence which only results in the deaths of more U.S. soldiers. If Bush wanted to win, he'd MOAB every Iraqi city flat and CBU anything that moved out in the flat hinterlands. He just doesn't have the stones to wage a real war. (Reinstitute draft, go to wartime economy, go Carthage on their butts). The result is that we have already lost. Don't blame Americans or the media. Blame the leadership which already HAS the authority to wage this war (in the wrong country mind you) and who has failed utterly to do so.  (Sep 26, 2007 | post #10)

A Long Way From `South Park' --

Yes. And that is the point isn't it. Trey Parker and Matt Stone target ALL groups with equal abandon. No sacred cows here. Every race, every religion, every political stripe gets skewered. Most gratifying. For people who feel threatened by the act of thinking, there is always such safe fare as "Dancing with the HasBeens" or "Happily Ever After".  (Sep 25, 2007 | post #6)
