Sees definite double standard in race for the White House

I would love to vote for a woman President, but how about a woman whose path to power doesn't include marrying the right man? If we elect Hillary, we are just asking for more George W. Bush style incompetence that tends to go hand-in-hand with giving people jobs based on their family connections rather than their own merits.  (Apr 13, 2008 | post #12)

Drug war often neglected for lighter concerns

If this is a free country, why do we let the government tell us what we're allowed to do with our own bodies? COPS SAY LEGALIZE DRUGS! ASK US WHY http://www.leap.cc /cms/index.php  (Mar 19, 2008 | post #23)

Speak your mind about forced annexation issue | OPINION | Ashev...

Nope, just a citizen concerned with the city's economic health and tax burdens, and I have taken the time to educate myself a little on these matters.  (Mar 19, 2008 | post #27)

That's not true, there are some very strict restrictions on what and where the city can annex. And I agree that if somebody is living on Granddaddy's farm, and the city comes marching out to what they thought was country, the city should not be able to annex. Maybe a 10 to 20 year limit from when the buildings go up to when the city can annex. But when you get Biltmore Lake trying to pretend that Asheville sprang up out of nowhere to steal Granddaddy's house - give me a break. These rich whiners were told before they bought that annexation was a strong possibility, but they bought anyway, apparently thinking their money and influence would buy them out of their tax obligations. If anybody should be a poster child for annexation, it's Biltmore Lake, and everytime one of these people is in the paper complaining, it just makes the whole crowd look completely ridiculous.  (Mar 19, 2008 | post #26)

Once again, if there is nothing about Asheville that you need, you are free to vote with your feet. If you don't want to get annexed, don't live on the suburban fringe - it's that simple.  (Mar 18, 2008 | post #22)

I wouldn't hold my breath. The state's population is becoming more urbanized all the time, and the trend is only going to accelerate as congestion and high gas prices lead more people to question whether the suburban lifestyle is really worth it. And as investment in central cities increases, across the state and across the country, cities are only growing in power and importance, and will be increasingly able to fight some of these senseless subsidies for sprawl that have been put in place in the postwar era. I wouldn't be surprised to see those 46 states start moving the way of N.C. and the other 3. The environmentally and economically unsustainable and culturally vacant suburban lifestyle is a shrinking way of life, and a lot of folks are going to have to make a choice between living in the city or living in the country, and come to grips with the unrealistic notion that you can get both worlds in the same parcel of land.  (Mar 18, 2008 | post #20)

Tourists pay room taxes and sales taxes. Why not put a GPS on everybody's car, and charge them per-mile for road use, instead of using the gas tax? Prius drivers get to use the same roads as Yukon drivers, but pay much less in taxes because their cars are so fuel-efficient. The fact is, there isn't a perfectly fair way to collect taxes, so we have to accept some proxies, i.e. fuel tax instead of road tolls. Increased property taxes for those who live near Asheville may not be 100% perfectly fair, but it's as fair as we can get in this day and age, certainly much more so than letting all these people freeload on the backs of city taxpayers.  (Mar 18, 2008 | post #14)

Nobody likes paying taxes, but fair is fair and the law is the law. Just because you'd rather let others carry your weight doesn't make you Patrick Henry.  (Mar 18, 2008 | post #13)

If these against-annexation freeloaders are so independent of Asheville, why do they insist on living 10 minutes from downtown, then whining when they are asked to bear some of the responsibilities of living in this community. Last I checked, there was plenty of room in Madison County for folks who don't need Asheville.  (Mar 18, 2008 | post #10)

Mumpower campaign benefits constituents, not contributors | OPI...

I'm no Socialist, but most of those on the "Government never did anybody any good and never will, being careful with other people's money" zombie bandwagon are really saying, "I have no earthly idea what people need or how to help them." Sorry, but I'm looking for somebody with a few ideas rattling around in their head to represent me, even if they are hopefully a fiscal realist about what we can actually afford.  (Mar 17, 2008 | post #35)

Label me how you want, I'm not Democrat or Republican, I just listen to people and see who's got maturity and vision, and who spouts off ignorant platitudes about "Mexicans, drug thugs and liberal kooks" without offering any solutions beyond being against all of the above.  (Mar 16, 2008 | post #31)

Does anyone really take Mumpower seriously as a big-league politician? I don't know how somebody expects to get elected to the House saying, "if you want pork vote for somebody else." Not that it isn't a problem, but does any voter in their right mind want to martyr our district to prove it? Bumpounder makes his bones ranting and raving against the "extreme liberals" on Asheville City Council, but when it comes to being a realist and a deal-maker among members of his own party, it seems that he'd rather continue to play the role of opposition demagogue contrarian, and have about as much impact as he does on Council - i.e, none.  (Mar 15, 2008 | post #26)

City Council approves an 11-story building in south side of dow...

Right on. Some people act like free parking is a basic human right on par with food, shelter and health care. The government does not need to guarantee life, liberty, and free parking. Let the private sector work it out.  (Mar 12, 2008 | post #19)
