Strip club visit costs ex-official

Do your homework. The voters of Hawthorne did not "keep electing these people." The voters elected NEW people for the jobs. NEW people who promised there would be no more back room politics, there would be complete transparency, that things would be different than they had been. I'm not sure how much things have changed, but it's not the same people. There's as saying: "The more things change, the more they remain the same." "Nothing is going to change in Hawthorne until the voters make a change at the ballot box." They did make a change at the ballot box.  (Nov 9, 2010 | post #51)

Wiseburn district voters to decide on new high school

I've read a lot of interesting comments. I find it interesting when looking at the postings that are loaded with "name calling" that more often than not they have a similar point of view on this issue. I would have expected that common view point would be coming from those against unification, but I would be wrong. I have to laugh at the references to "increased property values" that will result in Wiseburn unification. What good are increased property values if I have no intent on selling out and moving? If I want to continue living where I am living then increased property values are meaningless. Of course, increased property values could ultimately lead to higher property taxes if/when my property is reassessed. Oh joy. Then there's the comment about how well the Wiseburn Board is doing and how they keep their promises and complete their projects on time. That's not altogether true. We had to pass another bond issue because they were behind and running out of money for a major project (Dana) and then after the bond issue was passed they had extra money that was put into the other schools. Then there is, of course, the old Dana building that was falling down and could not be renovated because renovation would cost more than building a new building. Was that a little white lie by the Board? Did the money from the second bond needed to finish Dana go to renovating the old Dana building? But wouldn't it have been cheaper and most cost effective to tear that all down and just build new buildings for the charter high schools? It certainly would be if the Wiseburn Board was being honest to the people living in the Wiseburn School District. And we all know they are completely honest because they are setting examples to our children by their actions and spoken words and campaign rhetoric. We want all the children in the Wiseburn School District to grow up and be just like them.  (Oct 2, 2010 | post #40)

Hawthorne charter school off to an early start

That only does you any good if you plan on selling. Do you think most people in Hollyglen want to sell and move out? Or maybe they like the neighborhood and don't really care that their property values go up. For somebody who plans on staying in the neighborhood, the best thing higher property values means is eventually higher property taxes. So your argument only applies to those who plan on leaving. And I have to ask, are you advocating that the ends justifies the lies? That's what it sounds like to me. Is that the example you want for your children?  (Aug 28, 2010 | post #19)

The schools were here when I moved here. And I supported the schools and the bonds based on what I was told by the school board. I may support the schools but I do not support being lied to. If you support being lied to because it is the less wasteful of the two, then I hope you don't teach your children that. It would be bad for them to grow up believing that the ends justifies the deceit. And be sure you don't find fault with anyone else who lies to you to get what they want. I guess that would have to include your children. So if you do approve of the school board lying to you to get what they wanted, then realize you are setting an example and a standard for your children.  (Aug 23, 2010 | post #15)

You just don't get it, do you. IT WAS A JOKE. It would seem you don't know Mark any better than you know Kyle or me. BTW, just for the record, you should realize that I am a Republican and I don't mean a liberal Republican. The views I've been expressing regarding rights - the rights of any American citizen - are my views consistent with being a conservative Republican in that I hold very strictly to our Constitution and the rights guaranteed therein. You sign yourself as "Crap on Democrats" but the ideology of your opinions would indicate that you are more in line with being a liberal Democrat as opposed to being a Republican or a conservative anything. I'm sincerely curious.  (Aug 21, 2010 | post #35)

Letter of the Day: Presidents shouldn't take part in fund...

Yes, Bush and Cheney did the same thing. And so has just about every president we've had. That doesn't make it right. I agree with Al on this.  (Aug 21, 2010 | post #6)

How much of their plans should candidates reveal?

But wouldn't it be nice if we knew what Mr. Brown's goals might be for the state? That wouldn't be making campaign promises that cannot be kept. I'd just like to know a bit more of what he wants to accomplish before I cast my ballot.  (Aug 21, 2010 | post #6)

Hawthorne charter school off to an early start

I applaud the charter schools in Hawthorne; or anywhere else for that matter. They provide wonderful learning opportunities for students. However, I am concerned for the safety of the students attending the charter schools in Hawthorne. The Wiseburn School Board was able to get a bond issue passed because it was so desperately needed. It was desperate because the old Dana Middle School facilities were unsafe and COULD NOT BE MADE SAFE because they were in such bad condition. So either the Wiseburn School Board lied to everybody and essentially has been stealing money from local residents, or the students attending the charter schools are in imminent danger of the walls falling down around them. Could the Wiseburn School Board have gotten the bond issue passed without the lies? Guess we'll never know since they never bothered trying to be honest.  (Aug 21, 2010 | post #10)

Nice sentiment, but rights aren't his to give. There's a big difference in what you might refer to as rights and what might be called the short end of the stick. By the way, a friend of mine (a Guidi hater) once gave me several file boxes of material and told me that those boxes contained all the evidence needed to send Guidi away. I spent several months going through every piece of paper in those boxes. I found things that weren't very pleasant and things that I did not like in the least. But the boxes contained nothing that would send Guidi anywhere. Funny thing is, all that information I went through is available to everyone on the internet. Maybe Guidi will be convicted of a felony now and some people will be very happy. But I wonder how many will have an empty victory because they wanted so badly to put him away for something he did politically in his role of mayor. Most of his detractors will just be glad he is gone. But some of those filled with really deep hatred for the man will only be happy on the surface because they want more than anything else to put Guidi away for political corruption. I guess time will tell.  (Aug 17, 2010 | post #27)

Apparantly you don't know me nor my wife, nor our history will Larry Guidi anywhere nearly as well as you think you do. If you did, then you'd know both Kyle and I take a dim view on convicting anyone without due process whether it be you or Larry Guidi. You'd also know that we both really dislike people convicting anybody without them having ALL of the facts. By having all of the facts I include being able to exclude any false accusations. Until all the facts have been presented in this case - and I don't think the Breeze has access to all the facts that will come out in court - I don't believe you have been privy to all the facts either. You'd also know that neither Kyle nor I have backed down from Larry Guidi on anything or have you forgotten the campaigning we've actively participated in? Any former elected official we have supported who might agree with your views in this regard would really have to be pretty damned ungrateful for actions we've taken in the past. Furthermore, if you had any respect at all for Kyle or me or our beliefs, or were any kind of friend at any time since we've known each other, you would never have taken it to a personal level like this. Guidi may very well be guilty as charged. But there is also a chance thst he is not. Whatever my personal feelings are about the man, I maintain that he should be given his day in court rather than just stand convicted in the press. And if you really want to know what Kyle would say, call her. You have the phone number. But make sure you call her, not me.  (Aug 16, 2010 | post #21)

Sorry but I have to stand by what I said. Since it is the "government " pressing forward with this case, Guidi has the rights to a presumption of innocence and to a fair trial. Even elected officials have rights to due process. And anyone who denies those rights to any other person is a fool. Deny those rights to one person and you are denying those rights to all. That idea has been maintained numerous times by individuals much more versed in law and civil rights than I am. I agree with them.  (Aug 16, 2010 | post #20)

You, as have a lot of others, found the man guilty without benefit of a trial. Thank God most of your type were circumvented by English Law and the Magna Carta. Guidi may very well be guilty, but if found not guilty after benefit of a trial you will find yourself eating your words of advice to take a plea bargain. And the worst possible insult to you is that he would have proven himself to be smarter than you!  (Aug 14, 2010 | post #14)
