Franken shuts down Lieberman on Senate floor

The jokes this guy is talking about never aired. That's what I mean by "grasping at straws." The Republicans must be out of bullets and just throwing the gun at this point if this is their argument against Franken. It's kind of sad. They used to be a lot more ... formidable.  (11 hrs ago | post #681)

Why Gay Marriage Is Such A Big Deal

Excuse my dropping in on this conversation so late in the game, but I have a small question for you, Irvin: In your hypothetical theocracy, the theocracy you crave and work toward, use your vote to effect, what happens to those of us who do not share your religious beliefs? As someone who does not for one second believe in the story of Jesus, I find it chilling to think that a fellow American would determine which laws are correct or just based on what he or she thinks their god wrote thousands of years ago in a book that has been translated thousands of times by thousands of people  (11 hrs ago | post #16)

Cute. The jokes were never aired, they were bad. It was a writers' session, coming up with material for a show. This is grasping at straws stuff, Insane. It's ridiculous.  (12 hrs ago | post #679)

You mean like the Heritage Foundation, Fox News, Salem Radio Network, The Drudge Report, Red State.org, Free Republic, National Review, and the 600 radio stations that carry Rush Limbaugh at least three hours a day and Sean Hannity another three hours a day? Yeah, the left controls the media like you control Topix.  (12 hrs ago | post #677)

Al Franken published a satirical article and wrote a few bad jokes. He also wrote a hell of a lot of funny jokes, and most of us get his satire. It's not like he was doing cocaine, abusing alcohol, not showing up for duty, and even avoiding combat in a war while later on advocating a "pre-emptive war." I mean, it's like comparing apples and oranges here. If you really want to compare, then be fair about it.  (12 hrs ago | post #676)

I think someone might have spiked your eggnog, Indy. Where is all this paranoia coming from? FYI: The book about Rush may have saved his life! Think about it -- the book comes out... Rush loses weight... So, really, Rush Limbaugh may very well owe his weight loss and thus his very life to Al Franken. And, yes, Indy, it's a joke about "fair and balanced." Did you know that Fox News actually tried to sue Al Franken over that phrase in the title of his book? They were LITERALLY laughed out of court  (12 hrs ago | post #675)

Flawed and inflammatory, in fact. Perhaps even cuckoo for cocoa puffs. I couldn't even find the words to respond it was such a bizarre answer to the divorce ban proposal.  (17 hrs ago | post #288)

That's all you've got? A satirical article he wrote 8 years ago, a staff meeting from before 1995 in which he threw out some bad ideas for jokes, and a bad joke at one of a dozen or so USO stand-up routines? The Republican party has got to be scared out of their minds of Al Franken if this is their political play at this point: Dig up and drag out lame comedy from a past career and headline him telling Lieberman that he actually doesn't get to go over his time limit on the Senate floor one time. I thought you Republicans sort of prided yourselves on being tough guys? Sounds like crying over nothing to me  (19 hrs ago | post #668)

You are way off. He published a satirical article in Playboy eight years ago. I know the GOP has tried to make a big deal about it, but it just didn't work. You can't hold a satirical piece, or even a bad joke that someone made almost a decade before holding political office against them. Especially when, in real life, he's been married for 32 years and in his first proposed piece of legislation, fought for women's rights to pursue justice if they are raped: "Motivated by the harrowing violence Jamie Leigh Jones suffered in 2005 while working for Halliburton/KBR in Iraq, Franken pushed a measure to withhold defense contracts from companies that 'restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court.' Franken's measure passed, 68 to 30. The 30 opponents -- representing 75% of the entire GOP Senate caucus -- were Republican men. Posted by Steve Benen, Washington Monthly at 8:00 AM on December 22, 2009."  (20 hrs ago | post #662)

Brazilian court, in shift, orders kidnapped boy returned to dad...

Five years -- amazing! I can't believe this child has been held for five years in Brazil. Does he even remember his native language? How could his mother have done this to him? What is the back story here? And how cynical indeed that a trade bill hold up is what finally moved the Brazilian court to act.  (20 hrs ago | post #7)

I proudly support the writer of "Lies (and the Lying Liars who Tell Them): A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right," "The Truth (with Jokes)," and "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot." He's a great writer and an honest senator. What pornography have you been reading?  (21 hrs ago | post #658)
