Cigarette tax unfair

The solution is simple for anyone who feels unfairly burdened by tobacco taxes-- quit smoking. I agree it's politically expedient to gouge addicts who are too dumb or weak to try to conquer their habits, but hardly unfair to make them pay extra for their wholly curable behavior.  (15 hrs ago | post #3)

Votes for Hillary betrayed faith

What a crock! I despise the Catholic church for its centuries of oppression and deception, including sexual abuse of children and relegation of women to second-class status. I also hold its "faithful " adherents in contempt for their arrogant attamepts to impose their quaint beliefs on others. Maybe Reverend Hagee was right that the Holy See is the Great ****  (16 hrs ago | post #7)

Time to change assembly bill

On Freedom of Assembly: Towns like York, Gettysburg and Littlestown should get better advice from their solicitors or else hire new ones from cities like Harrisburg or Philadelphia so they can start complying with the Constitution and save money paid out for violations.  (Wednesday | post #1)

Hanover officer settles discrimination suit for $75,000

A settlement of this size, even without an admission of liability, is a clear win. The absence of public comment is a prudent course for both sides, especially for the criminal Chief. In retrospect, he was not a very good investment for Gettysburg.  (Wednesday | post #1)

Police wouldn't act on drug incident

I don't think the writer will succeed, but if she wants to second-guess the cops, she can file a private criminal complaint against the tenant for the weed and go to the SPCA on the animal issues. The county DA must approve a private complaint before it is prosecuted, and they usually don't. The SPCA declines to enforce much more serious cases of animal abuse. I say "chill" too. MYOB.  (Tuesday May 13 | post #16)

Don't get fumed at workers at pump

As we head for $4 and $5 a gallon, us Dutchmen can save a few cents from day to day by checking local prices at www.pennsylvaniaga sprices.com/. And _never_ buy Citgo which is owned by Venezuela which is run by Hugo Chavez. Even 7/11 dropped Citgo as suppliers of their gas.  (Monday May 12 | post #1)

Support bill to limit dog chaining

Time limits on chaining would be practically uneneforceable and thus a meaningless attempt to strengthen the current cruelty law. There are important considerations against micromanaging limits on how people keep their animals, namely: animals are property and they must be kept away from other people and their property.  (Sunday May 11 | post #3)

On Mother's Day, some say it with ink

You can't argue with honoring Mom, but tats are still gratutitous self-mutilation. They remain the marks of the lower classes. Law enforcement officers in many jurisdictions are required to keep them covered, and even the Marines don't like them. If you show up for an interview at any large sophisticated employer with exposed ink, it will work against you. If you have a statement to make, use your mouth and your mind.  (Sunday May 11 | post #1)

Some tips on restaurant tipping

Pennsylwania Dutchmen like me are tighter than, uh, any other ethnic group you can think of which is typically associated with cheapness. Not "thrifty " or "prudent "-- plain old "cheap"!  (Wednesday May 7 | post #13)

Pa. to ban gay unions?

Why not buck the trend of modern civil rights law like Virginia did and strengthen a statutory ban with a constitutional amendment in case those poofter-hugging federal judges decide that the U.S. Constitution's Equal Rights clause is paramount?  (Tuesday May 6 | post #1)

Where's uproar over McCain's nutty holy man?

I agree with the Frank Rich piece in the New York Times today entitled "The All-White Elephant in the Room": www.nytimes.com/20 08/05/04/opinion/0 4rich.html?th& emc=th I regard all religious persuasions as defects in intellect and character, with the two guys at issue here the most extreme examples of why religion has little to offer us as a solution to our problems other than a temporary hit of euphoria from the "opiate of the poeple".  (Sunday May 4 | post #3)

Let the people pick how we pick judges

Merit selection of judges is why the federal courts are properly regarded by practicing attorneys as having a higher quality of judges than Pennsylvania state courts, where judges are elected. Most voters have little or no idea what judges do or what makes one candidate better suited to the job than another. Both appointment and election of judges will remain subject to political influence, but merit selection is much more likely to give us the best judiciary that money can buy. That's another issue-- keeping judicial pay sufficiently competitive with private practice to attract good lawyers rather than political hacks.  (Sunday May 4 | post #1)

Racism exists today?

What annoys me and other members of the "dominant white culture" about people is their nonconforming behavior, which in my experience tends to correlate rather highly with non-white race and non-Anglo-Saxon ethnicity. Those behaviors include disobedience to the rule of law, inability or unwillingness to follow common manners and social mores, and insistence on using languages other than standard English in public business and government. It is possible to maintain one's culture or heritage in private yet conform one's public behavior into the common culture. Failure to do this results in a self-imposed "ghettoizatio n" in the traditional sense of that word, which is to isolate oneself from others. That's a high price to pay and is entirely avoidable with some discipline and effort.  (Sunday May 4 | post #6)

Disability allegations against National Park Service Visitor Ce...

If a facility is in compliance with the letter of the law and regulations, it is an abuse of the legal process to file complaints alleging otherwise, as she appears to recognize. Attempts to impose alternative designs of buildings by activism and constructive advocacy are proper but lose credibility if they are not tempered by the rule of reason.  (Sunday May 4 | post #2)
