Yeast infection is only one type of infection that manifests itself in vagina and in the area around the opening of the vagina, called the vulva, among women and in the area around the penis among men. There are three types of vaginal infections or vaginitis in their general medical term: 1. Trichomoniasis: vaginal infection condition triggered by parasitic protozoa. 2. Bacterial vaginosis: vaginal infection condition, which, in most cases, is sexually transmitted and is caused by bacteria. 3. Yeast infection: vaginal infection caused by yeast-like microorganisms called candida albicans. The medical term for yeast infection is candidiasis. Some symptoms of the localized vaginal yeast infection are: 1. Itching, irritation and burning of the vagina or vulva. 2. White and abnormal discharge from the vagina. 3. Pain during sexual intercourse. 4. Frequent pain during urination. The symptoms of systemic vaginal yeast infection are: 1. Severe swelling of the vagina characterized by swollen anus and purple color of the vulva. 2. Pain during urination. 3. General fatigue and lethargy. 4. Bleeding and swelling of hemorrhoid veins The symptoms in men: 1. Burning sensation and irritation during and after sexual intercourse. 2. White lesions and red rash in the penis area. 3. Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) in humans, that is caused by the bacterium chlamydia trachomatis. In Greek, trachomatis means harsh. The symptoms of chlamydia is mild and tend to go unnoticed -- until serious damage occurs. Therefore, some people call the disease “silent disease”. Chlamydia is found only in humans, and it is 8th most common sexually transmitted disease reported in the U.S. with over 2 million people between the ages 14 to 39 infected every year. The disease is transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person during vaginal, anal or oral sex. In women the infection can spread from the cervix to the uterus and to fallopian tube. Chlamydia can cause serious eye infection such as conjunctivitis during child birth. Moreover, it also induces male infertility and ectopic pregnancy (in the wrong place). The common symptoms of chlamydia include; In women: 1. Abnormal vaginal discharge. 2. Burning sensation when urinating. 3. Low back pain. 4. Nausea 5. Fever In men: 1. Discharge from penis. 2. A cold sores is a small, sometimes painful blister or sore that can appear on lips, the nose or on the mouth. Cold sores are caused by a virus called herpes simplex, commonly confused with the genital herpes virus, but is a separate virus strain. The virus that causes cold sores are Type 1 and it is really contagious through kissing and other skin contact. The virus may remain to stay in the body for the rest of the person’s life. Genital herpes symptoms include pain in the buttocks, legs, or genital area, feeling of pressure on the abdominal area, and a vaginal fluid discharge. It is itching and painful for the first time. Often the pain is described as a tingling sensation. This particular genital herpes symptom has been described best as feeling raw or similar to a rug burn or a sunburn type sensation. After a few days, the most common genital herpes symptom of tiny sores will begin to appear in the genital area. They can also appear in the urinary passage of both women and men, and inside the vagina.
