How inspiring to hear about the lengths that this one young man would go to in order to try to save other human beings while ignoring the danger posed to himself. It restores my faith in humanity.  (Jul 26, 2011 | post #4)

So, you're saying that because I wasn't in the Revolutionary War, I can't possibly know anything about it? BTW, no teacher is "drafted " into the position...they are all "volunteers ".  (May 20, 2007 | post #8)

Detroit - Third World Country

Economic woes seem to be a major part of Detroit's problem, But, why are the people destroying their own history? (I read the Ruins of Detroit). Crime also seems to be out of control. I work with a woman, also from Detroit, and the last time she went back (a few years ago), she compared it to a Third World country. She said the middle class seems to have fled the area... chased out by crime and bad schools. Has anyone started a "Save Detroit" movement?  (May 20, 2007 | post #1)

Woman who ditched baby for cocaine gets one year in count...

..only 1 year? What a shame for everyone involved and society as a whole. On the other hand, at age four, you can't vote or be politically active. I guess that means whatever trauma you suffer isn't going to mean as much to judges, lawyers, juries, etc. Unless you can vote, you have no voice.  (May 19, 2007 | post #2)

Strange & Unusual - War Veteran Carjacked

The perpetrators bystanders certainly need to check their morals (or lack thereof). However, this appears to be a crime of opportunity. I don't think an older man with money of any color would have been spared. I read the story on Foxnews, but I don't remember reading about the race of the bystanders or the perpetrators. I guess that part went over my head.  (May 19, 2007 | post #21)

What happened to Detroit?

I was born and raised in Detroit. Every once in a while, I go back (online) to check out the city I grew up in. I see nothing but bad news. The city has lost over half of its population, it is filled with empty buildings, the crime rate is out of control, and you can buy houses for less than cars. I don't keep up with local politics, so I plead ignorance there. I know a part of it is due to the auto industry, but that can't be blamed for everything. I was horrified when J L Hudson was destroyed. What a wonderful piece of history that Detroit let be destroyed!!! On occasion, I've thought of coming back to Detroit, but everytime I go online to see what's happening, it's always bad news, soaring crime rate, bad schools, etc. What happened to Detroit? It almost seems as if the people who actually live there are simply existing and don't care about their own city any more.  (May 19, 2007 | post #1)
