Was Noah's Flood Real?

The flood story shows up in multiple religions and cultures. One of the first and most interesting appearances is the Epic of Gilgamesh, in which Gilgamesh meets Utnapishtim, that version's Noah.  (Sep 23, 2009 | post #2423)

I'm in definite agreement that there are many, many countries in which insane, dangerous Muslims are in power, and while they may account for the core of Muslim political influence, they do not account for the majority of Muslims. Majority is not necessary for influence. The Nazi party, for example, only reached a 44% vote by outlawing campaigning by the other parties - rather pathetic, really - but still seized total control over Germany through clever political maneuvering. It would certainly be absurd to claim that certain Muslims do not present a significant threat to world peace; our main disagreement appears to be one regarding the level of permeation of their ideals into general Muslim society. And to show how divergent Muslim ideals can be, the Hadith are extremely polarizing. Some Muslims believe one group is real, others believe that another is, others believe that none are. Some of them, certainly, are pretty alarming, but Muslims as a whole do not necessarily believe in all or even any of these passages.  (Sep 23, 2009 | post #58)

Stamford woman pleads guilty in newborn's death

Yeah, I can see how your background would cause you to develop opinions on your side. As for me, I was born in Birmingham, but never actually lived here until about 3-4 years ago. And I have literally zero experience with the public school system, other than in knowing that it's not doing especially well at the moment. Most of my experience with illegal immigrants is with the workers I mentioned before - probably an example of the better sort - so that's where most of my opinion comes from. I can say that it annoys me when some of them refuse to even attempt learning English - there's nothing inherently bad about Spanish, but it seems like many of them won't even put forth a slight effort. As for the wall, I wasn't especially serious either, although a good public works program can do wonders for unemployment. And as for your not being sure which side of the issue you're on, I'm increasingly uncertain myself. I've seen some pretty eloquent and reasonable arguments on the anti-immigration side in this discussion, along with some that are . . . less so. And thank you as well for your politeness. I try to maintain a similar level, but sometimes when one post manages to combine about half of the things that annoy me . . . see above.  (Sep 23, 2009 | post #24)

What about my numbers was "bogus?" All of them were deliberately skewed in your argument's favor, and applying simple division to them still returned an answer in favor of mine. I admitted that a significant number of Muslims are crazy mass murderers, just as a significant number of Christians, atheists, Hindus, whites, blacks, and, in fact, HUMANS are crazy mass murderers. Again, our fundamental disconnect here is on whether being a Muslim makes one prone to violence. I am of the opinion that violent, insane people who happen to be in the largest demographic in their own region, i.e. Muslims, have come to rule many areas in the middle east, and this is a terrible political situation for the Muslims there who are just trying to live in peace. If you have been "there," wherever "there" is, please tell us all about it in detail, rather than just throwing out "you don't know! you weren't there!" as a blanket "I'm always right about everything" phrase and following it up with a misspelling of part of the creed of a religion you hate.  (Sep 23, 2009 | post #55)

Stamford woman pleads guilty in newborn's death

I apologize in advance for blowing up at this guy, but I do not tolerate ad hominem attacks on my character or that of others in a debate on serious issues. ------ Do not EVER call me a liar. When I state an opinion, it's because I genuinely believe in its truth and feel that my statements are supported by facts I've seen, not because I know that you're so obviously right but just feel like being evil. I have already demonstrated the ability to accept several points by those with whom I disagree. You responded to my valid personal account with a racist, COMPLETELY uninformed attack on a group far too large to generalize into a set of character flaws (which, admittedly, apply to some of them, just as in any group). But to suggest a reward for the killing of people for the crime of wanting to live in a different place, and even for caring about their lives is morally indefensible, and those who would do so represent the worst of humanity.  (Sep 23, 2009 | post #22)

First, I'd like to restate that the story was just an anecdote that occurred to me, though that's actually a valid idea - it would employ thousands of people who were looking for jobs. Your statement about the IRS is a scary point. As for having to spend government money to give them stuff, you're right, but I've always been of the opinion that the government should give fewer handouts, especially when in debt. Although patrolling and regulating the border has to cost a lot. You know, the main problem with the immigration debate is that both sides have some valid points. Isn't it annoying when the issues are so debatable?  (Sep 23, 2009 | post #21)

A valid point about the fake social security numbers, although it should be fairly obvious to any judge that you weren't doing your jobs in multiple places at once. I still say that we clearly aren't letting enough people across our borders if so many people (37.5 million as of 2006, accounting for about 1 in 10 people) are finding it impossible to get in legally. Keep in mind that only 2.7 million US citizens (less than one percent of the population) are not descended from those who immigrated without permission in the last five centuries or so. One aspect of immigration I find particularly interesting is the quality of the work. A stone wall was being built in my neighborhood. When the workers were fired and replaced after the discovery of their status as immigrants, the speed and quality of construction decreased significantly - the exact spot of the change is as visible as if a large red line had been drawn down it. This tale bears no real relation to the morality and legal status of immigration; I just thought it an interesting one while on the subject.  (Sep 23, 2009 | post #16)

Health Care - Birmingham, AL

I think providing free Healthcare is probably doable in theory, but not on a government-mandate d scale; I wonder how well a free hospital supported by sponsors would work? Likely not very, but it's conceivable. The point about competition is an interesting one - that had never occurred to me. Also, don't forget that "free" means "paid for with taxes" when the government says it.  (Sep 23, 2009 | post #5)

Jews Killed Christ so why do Christians kiss their ass?

Excellent. I think the "fact" you were replying to was likely made up on the spot by somebody who doesn't want to admit that there's a problem. Incidentally, why does your username include "Anarchy " when your avatar is the symbol used by a rigid dictatorship? I know it's off topic in a thread that needs to get back on topic, but that really confuses me.  (Sep 23, 2009 | post #53)

I'm not saying that THIS SPECIFIC immigrant shouldn't be jailed for murder. I'm just saying that immigration isn't the huge problem people think it is. Also, they simply don't have the power to fix their countries. And they can't immigrate legally because the USA doesn't like letting people in (above relatively tiny numbers) for some reason. Incidentally, a lot of illegals get fake social security numbers and pay taxes. I can't blame you for not knowing that, what with it being extremely weird and all.  (Sep 23, 2009 | post #12)

Should Firearms Be Banned All Together?

If guns are banned, do you think criminals will say "okay, I guess I can't do illegal things with illegal weapons" and hand them over before switching to using their bare hands? The scenario that seems more likely would involve more of an "Nobody else has a gun anymore? Now I'm unstoppable!" sort of reaction. I think certain varieties should be severely regulated (So, you say you're buying this car-mounted minigun for . . . self defense?!) and a better system for keeping track of who does and doesn't own guns should be in place, but that's it.  (Sep 23, 2009 | post #46)
