Miserable in SA. hang in there! its 3 weeks since my treatment. last 2 days i have been itching more than in the last week. but today i am a lot better. i have lots of dry patches like exema, i use hydrocortisone on those. i have sensitive skin and the 2 treatments with Malathion really wrecked my skin. still occassionally come up with a few small spots but they fade fast. last time i itched i checked out my skin with this microscope thing i got especially. when i didnt find anything my mind stopped working overtime and the itching actually eased. as long as u dont suspect new burrows, (in my case i think they burrowed in large watery spots which then crusted over), try to ease the itch and fingers crossed with time everythings gonna be ok. good luck.  (Jan 23, 2007 | post #4)

i suspected scabies long before i actually got the doctor to treat me. but there is an interesting twist. remember i found something in my bath water? checked it out with my new microscope...doesnt look like a scabies mite! more like an adult flee..long legs and all. could this be unrelated and i just happened to pick it up somewhere? hhhmmmmm... but im still symptoms free, apart from the itch. look at the link i posted on post scabies and still worried. what do YOU think?  (Jan 22, 2007 | post #1872)

I had the scabies first. gave it to my daughter...she plays with it all the time. so it was exposed to it. then we had treatment. we are getting better after treatment 2 weeks ago. the vet just looked at the hamsters skin. i was still abit worried but daughter was missing the hamster. so she played with it since the treatment. and now the hamster is scratching last 2 days. so i think she prob picked it up again. i think my mistake was thinking i didnt really have scabies but something else... because several close contacts have not got it from me. but now the hamster is scratching im pretty sure its scabies lol. bummer. i never should have let her touch it after treatment for a few weeks till i was sure everyone was ok.  (Jan 17, 2007 | post #1793)

saying that, if you are still worried, there is a lot of info on this forum and at least you will know what to do.  (Jan 16, 2007 | post #16)

going crazy with scabies

we all have to remember that not all cases of scabies are difficult to get rid of. if u have treated yourself and your close contacts and your pets if any, and did all the washing etc, you should expect to be still itching for a couple of weeks.you may get some small spots as the debris is cleaned out of your skin. as long as they fade and you are not seeing new burrows THINK POSITIVE.  (Jan 16, 2007 | post #15)

Mary help! im going to go crazy. i really think im getting better. 2 weeks since my treatment. small spots used to pop up and dissappear after a few hours. last 2 days i have no new spots. the itching is getting better. my daughter is getting better too. BUT... since yesterday i think the hamster is scratching!!!!! as she got all clear from the vet I let daughter play with her. now im going crazy thinking that if the hamster has it, my daughter would have got it back. where are we standing on this? can they breed on the hamster? will it take over 3 weeks for symptoms to show on the animal as with humans? if they cant breed on her, how long can they live on the hamster? i dont want this nightmare to start again. my friends think im just too sensitive over the issue and maybe the hamster is just doing her own usual thing.  (Jan 16, 2007 | post #1763)

HI Mary its 8x20 MICRO MONOCULAR +X30 MICROSCOPE attachment. lol won the bid now have to pay. was dirt cheap. hamster not scratching at all i think. i was just cautious. saw the doc today. says theres nothing to make a biopsy on. im still coming up in small red spots, but they fade fast. and she thinks im over it, and now concedes i had scabies, though she didnt diagnose it in the first place. im not sure iver is approved for scabies eradication here. and i do hope i wont need it. but its good to have all this knowledge from my itching buddies here! hang in there!  (Jan 12, 2007 | post #1612)

hi fed up. Malation i used is 0.5%. its available off prescription here. and its the stuff the docs prescribe first for scabies. i understand its cheaper than permithrin. u need to cover every bit of ur body and leave on 24 hours. reaply to hands if u wash them. second treatment with malathion can be done in 2 weeks. says adults dont need it above the neck but we all aggree here we do get it on our heads so do ur face/behind ears, and head as well as u can. good luck.  (Jan 12, 2007 | post #1611)

My post disappeared too.. Thanx Been There, the hamster has been checked over, the vet cant find any signs of mites (but again no microscope check). sorry i cant remember who had their guinnea pig diagnosed with mites? how was it discovered? i was in my bath and remembered someone mentioned finding black specks in the water (im terrible remembering names). i got to searching and found something. against the stark white of the bath it looks like a black speck with what i see is 4 legs. have it on a tissue in a jar, looks more grey and see thru. waiting for my magnifying apparatus from ebay. physically im feeling much better. 10 days after my second malathion treatment the itching is minimal. i still get some little watery bumps but they disappear in hours. im hoping that because i started the treatment so early on into my infection it will be easier to get rid of. mentally im still not all there, my catch phrase is Dont touch me! FOR ANY NEW-COMERS TO THE FORUM. IF U ARE GOING TO READ THRU THE THREAD - TAKE NOTES! EVEN JUST THE PAGE NUMBER. it wil save u a lot of time going thru everything again later. going to the doctor today, dont have much to show her now so dont know if she will send me for that biopsy. the appointment takes weeks if not months here. it would be good if i still have problems then. hope not. my neighbour is still itching, but typically is in denial, wont get treated till i find out for sure what it is. well im staying away from her. i hope this nightmare is over for me, but every new spot makes me freak out till it goes down. i pray that we all beat this.  (Jan 12, 2007 | post #1603)

im looking for a microscope...plann ing to do my own scrapings. have to SEE mites before i go totally nuts, because people keep telling me maybe its not that! Slomo or Been There i think one of u posted something about what magnification u see them with... im looking but i cant find the post. could u repeat please? been thinking loads about this..if u have mites under the nails would they bite there and wouldnt that hurt as hell, the area being so sensitive? and what about a full body wax? ouch...would they get stuck on the strips and come off? taking the hamster to the vet tonight...with gloves... and will ask for that biopsy when i see the doc on friday.  (Jan 9, 2007 | post #1546)

Jersey Itch, at least now u know what it is for sure, and can treat it correctly. thats a big step. good luck. im going doctor on friday. will MAKE her send me for biopsy. just spoke today to the person i was sure had given me scabies. u know i counted 6 weeks back from when i started itching... turns out he doesnt have it and never did. think i believe him. so im back to wondering where i got it. before i self diagnosed i was very close to a couple of "friends " well hell im single. both these guys say they are 100% ok as are their families. only 1 of my chidren has shown symptoms. i assumed she passed it on to her dad. he has been itching but not one spot. his wife has been itching and has maybe 2 spots. hhmmm maybe that is just coincidense. my neighbour has stopped itching and only has the 2 small spots. i have warned all my friends. one has told me today she has a rash all over her neck which itches like mad but not at all at night..... meanwhile.... i have been stressing out at work. wiping everything down before and AFTER touching it. (its not that bad its only the steering wheel and handbreak 4 times per day). i flinch when workmates put a hand on my shoulder with hello. and i actually had a teeny accident on the road today which could nevertheless cost me my job. i need a proper diagnosis if the doctors can be bothered! so yes i think i am going nuts lol  (Jan 6, 2007 | post #1450)
