God or condoms - take your pick

********WHOA and WAIT A PRECIOUS SECOND DO YOU PREFER GOD IN SCHOOL OR CONDOMS IN SCHOOL? This kid, BRIAN HAGAN LYNCH, wrote in the paper today that he is frustrated regarding "the ignorance and hypocrisy of Dr. Martin" due to her removal of the word "God" in little girl's poem. Then, he says he is also extremely frustrated that a local pastor suggested that if "God" were back in the schools, babies wouldn't be having babies. Lynch felt this was a "condescendin g and ignorant" remark by the pastor. Then he blasts the school system as being run by Southern Baptists (correct spelling noted) "who view sexual intercourse as morally wrong" (I'm assuming he means sexual intercourse amongst young unmarried teens ... but he might be saying all Southern Baptists are sexually repressed)and NOW GET THIS (the best part) If "McDowell High students were given condoms, teen pregnancies would become a rarity." GIVEN condoms? - You mean like taxpayers should pay for them? Now, don't get me wrong, I appreciate young folks expressing themselves in the letters to the editor, but now I find myself in a "state of perplexity"  (Dec 6, 2012 | post #1)

Self righteous so-called Christians

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE CONTEXT This was what Paul (who was gay, BTW)said in a letter to early Christians which made it into the New Testament in Corinthians. You will say the letter has to do with context- please don't trouble yourself. Everything has context- there lies the problem. Paul said it is better not to marry. Paul says in 1 Cor. 7:8, “But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain even as I.” And, in 1 Cor. 7:24,27, “Brethren, let each man remain with God in that condition in which he was called… 27Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you released from a wife? Do not seek a wife.”  (Dec 4, 2012 | post #15)

raped & pregnant - THANK GOD

I AM SOOO CONFUSED********** ***** Dear Old Fort preacher, Is your question whether people could agree to limit abortion to rape, rape by relative, and life of mother prior to 24 weeks - cut and dried with no exceptions? I can't really answer your question until I am sure exactly what you are talking about. After reading all your posts – I'm confused as to your position. Others say they understand your position, but I really don’t understand how you rectify the cognitive dissonance of saying abortion is murder at all times YET murder can be justified. If you are ambivalent, please just say so. I would really appreciate your clarification by responding to the questions. THESE ARE YOUR BELIEFS THAT YOU HAVE CLEARLY STATED: ** Women have the right to choose if they meet criteria that their condition was not their fault. **Abortion at any stage of pregnancy and for any reason is murder. ** Murdering a baby CAN be morally right when two lives are at stake. ** Killing a baby is OK when a. the mother is a victim of rape b. the life of the mother is endangered c. the mother is a victim of rape by a relative THESE ARE THE SITUATIONS WHICH I'M NOT SURE WHAT YOU BELIEVE ** Killing a baby due to rape, incest, life of mother should only be legal before viability or should it be legal after 24 weeks’ gestation? ** Killing a baby due a birth defect, or non-viable condition is OK or not OK? And if you believe this is OK, can the killing occur after 24 weeks' gestation or should the woman be forced to continue on at that point?  (Nov 13, 2012 | post #171)

raped & pregnant - THANK GOD

IN A PERFECT WORLD - WOULDN'T THAT JUST BE PERFECT? - A world with no accidental pregnancies (50% of all pregnancies are unintended in 2011 and in 1950 - no change) -A world in which women can afford to care for her children (5.2 million is the number of custodial mothers who were due child support in 2009.) US census data - A world where the majority of mothers aren't single (10.0 million is the number of single mothers living with children younger than 18 in 2011)- US Census data - A world where men don't rape women. (Nearly 20 percent of women in the United States have been raped at least once and one in four has been severely attacked by an intimate partner). - CDC - A world where fathers, grandfathers, uncles, etc do not rape innocent female relatives (number is unknown - but I've known numerous women who are victims of incest) - A world in which people have the knowledge and resources to prevent pregnancy - A world that values compassion instead of condemnation and judgement in areas they have not had to walk - A world without abortion  (Nov 12, 2012 | post #159)

MEN WHO DESIRE TO CONTROL WOMEN SHOULD TRY GETTING THEIR INFORMATION FROM SOME OTHER SOURCE THAN GLEN BECK AND FOX NEWS - HERE'S JUST ONE LINK INFORMATION IS READILY AVAILABLE - STATISTICS ARE AVAILABLE - SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE RE: VIABILITY/ FETAL PAIN - AVAILABLE. NOT SURE WHY THE FETAL INTELLIGENCE WOULD BE AN ISSUE FOR YOU - GO FIGURE. HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED "THE WHY" A WOMAN MIGHT WAIT UNTIL 24 WEEKS FOR PREGNANCY TERMINATION? http://www.guttmac her.org/pubs/fb_in duced_abortion.htm l If you feel this link is "liberal " (which it isn't), let me know cause I can get you more from the CDC, etc.  (Nov 6, 2012 | post #123)

OBJECTIVELY OBJECTIVELY OBJECTIVELY He clearly says if the results of the heinous crime of rape is a baby, that God willed it- intended it. HE SAID THAT AND MEANT EXACTLY WHAT HE SAID. He does praise God for ANY conception -no matter if it is caused by torture of a woman. The conception's rights supersede the woman's as well as the rapist (who has parenthood rights in many states. You are correct - he doesn't thank God for the rape - just the product of the rape. Kinda makes one feel better about the act of rape if you might just get a baby out of it- don't it. Bottom line: He has no right to impose his religious beliefs on the rest of us. He can have all the religious beliefs he wants = first amendment = but has to keep that separate from his legislation = first amendment  (Oct 27, 2012 | post #41)

What have you always wanted to ask a preacher?

TO HELL WITH SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE PREACHER SAYS:"I don't think the founding fathers intended the separation of church and state to separate elected officials from their beliefs any more than they intended to separate them from their political ideologies." BUT... do you think the founding fathers might have thought religious ideologues should not have the right to force their personal beliefs on the rest of us? cause that is exactly what ryan intends to try to do. Are you saying you agree with that?  (Oct 27, 2012 | post #203)

What have you always wanted to ask a preacher?

hey hey - I FOR ONE HIT THE BIG NEWS! It is because I struck a harmonious chord of understanding OR because I struck a nerve in folks who feel their religion has the only validity? The question, by the way, was for the person who started this thread, and he seems to be busy. The religious hate talk is rampant on TOPIX - I never said "on this particular thread."  (Oct 12, 2012 | post #173)

What have you always wanted to ask a preacher?

ISN'T MORMONISM EVERY BIT AS LEGITIMATE AS ANY OTHER RELIGION? WHY IS YOUR BRAND LEGITIMATE AND ALL THE OTHERS ARE NOT? When one religious group CLAIMS others are not legitimate, that is a huge disservice to us all. This kind of talk turns up the heat in the repulsive culture war battles over religion. This kind of talk can ultimately lead to people burning down black churches, beating up Muslims, painting swastikas on Synagogues, gunning down Sikhs and ignorant hate talk like we see all the time here on topix. No one expect religious leaders to lead the way to spread religious literacy. I do know some churches have had programs on the worlds religions to increase tolerance and understanding and an appreciation of the shared moral values - but this is relatively few and far between. It is frightening to see people on topix posting religious hatred from their anonymous position behind a computer screen. Do they get this hatred via their pastors who preach that theirs is the only legitimate religion? Do you think if people could be educated about world religions there would be less religious illiteracy, less rage filled hate crimes targeting people for their religion? PLEASE PLEASE stop saying your brand of religion is legitimate and others are not.  (Oct 11, 2012 | post #168)

He IS a Muslim

NOT SURE THE POINT OF TALKING TO A BUNCH OF UNSCHOOLED ANGRY REDNECKS None of our founding fathers were really Christians, according to the standards of that time. None of them showed any piety or religious zeal. Thomas Jefferson even created his own “digest of The New Testament”, which reportedly contained no magic/ supernatural events. Romney is just faking religion right now to get your vote. Since the first debate his acting lessons are paying off. He had an audience FL this weekend almost in tears - the suckers. He is using god talk ad nauseum and I wish someone would count how often he has mentioned "the poor people" since he stated that 47%of us are takers. That would be just about everyone in Marion - poor and takers. But he is not a religious person at all and will not govern from the pulpit as you would like. Obama is not religious either but give it lip service when appropriate.  (Oct 7, 2012 | post #24)

Jeffs is a fundamentalist mormon - quite different from the type of mormonism Mitt professes to practice. You need to find yourself some better ammunition - there's a plenty out there.  (Oct 7, 2012 | post #23)

WOWZA YOWZA OOOOOOWWWWZA Brilliant! Where were you on page 1? "Romney, who has polygamous roots, is a member of one of the Marginal Christian sects (which include Jehovah's Witnesses, Christian science and various pseudo-Christian cults) which purports to be the "only true and living church" because divine authority was restored to it through a known conjurer named Joseph Smith and avows the Book of Mormon is divinely inspired and a correction of errors in the bible?  (Oct 7, 2012 | post #373)
