Sam, Welty , I Can't Take This-Good luck

Hey there Welty- I had a scary issue yesterday as well! I had two itchy spots on each shin, not horribly itchy but not relieved by scratching once or twice, or even with lotion. Last night I looked at my legs when I got home & they both had pinkish areas where they itched & one had what looked like a welt. Now, this could have been from my scratching, but I thought back to the beginning of my ordeal- the two itchy spots on the tops of my feet that I thought was from the fur on my new slippers- & flipped out. I smeared perm on my shins. Today it feels better, some itch still there but not nearly as noticable. Pinkness is gone, too. Gee, anyone else would attribute this to dry skin, hot weather, shaving, what have you. But not me!! I'm still wearing things only once, too. Slowed down on the cleaning a little, but still using all the good arsenal. Better safe than sorry....  (Jun 11, 2008 | post #5)

Oh, thank YOU, Too Long, for the very kind words & wishes. Like Welty said in a former post, it is bizarrely difficult to enjoy remission sometimes due to the paranoia this disease brings, but I feel blessed to be doing as well as I currently am. Yes you have been at it too long- I really hope that you do get the well deserved break of remission, & cure, soon!!  (Jun 9, 2008 | post #2)

Scabies Questions.....

Hi Sleepless, Well I wish I could answer all of your questions, but from my experience, I can answer a couple. It is not easy to distinguish between live infestation & permithrin effects. The itching is still there, so it's confusing, but, the quality of the itch is different. It's not quite so unrelentless, & it does get a bit better each day. There should be a big reduction in crawling sensations, but, you do still get them. (I get them now, I'm in remission but sometimes I feel like I have a tiny bit of crawling but have learned to distinguish it as more of a tickle) Yes! I did/do break out in bumps that seem to scab over, heal, and get ready, pop up & do it all over again! I have a few on my shoulders & shoulder blades. Weird as can be. Dr.s will try to say scabies won't go in the scalp, but that's bull. They can & do. It might not be super common, but it happens. This can especially be a problem after a bath, they seem to crawl to the scalp to get away from the water. As for curing after only one perm treatment, I haven't read of anyone on this forum who has, but I suppose it's possible. Hope this helps you & that you get lots of answers. Keep treating yourself, family & environment & you will get better. Good luck to you, Sleepless.  (Jun 9, 2008 | post #2)

I think I made a terrible mistake

Oh, you are so right, Welty! Geez I freak out at every little thing. I got bumps on my inner forearms again, about a week ago, and I really now am thinking it's from petting my friend's dog cuz last time I did, I got them within 2 days or so, as well. They don't even really itch, sometimes have an itchy/irritated feel. If I had never been thru what we've gone thru, I'd just say Hives, and not give it much thought. I try each day to thank God for any day he gives me that I am in remission, free from the torment of constant itching & horrid rashes. The rosacea is a pain, just cuz it's, well, it's your face, ya know? But, I am having luck with SeaBuckthorn & some OTC stuff made specifically for rosacea that has, yep, sulfur. I saw a terribly disfigured woman at the mall this weekend, & thought Geez, there are people who WISH they had my problems. Thanks for the encouragement about the a/c. I just remember what Janet said, & panicked. But, so far so good. Yes, it is a big help with what is quickly turning into a very humid Chicago summer. I never thought of cleaning the sinks & stuff with the DeSolve It! I just spray it in crevices & stuff. Another great idea. Thanks again, Welty. Let's both try and enjoy our remission, I wish you the best that your remission progresses to cure very soon!!!  (Jun 9, 2008 | post #7)

I think I made a terrible mistake

Thanks, jammer & MK! Like I said, super paranoid. I think because at one point I thought I might have had bird mites (due to no appearance of burrows, there is a tree outside my window, & all around the windows & a/c unit isn't sealed very well) coupled with remembering Janet's experience, I just flipped. I'm doing so well now I just can't go back to how it was. It was a very dry winter so I think that helped with the environment. But, this was just last night. So far I am still feeling alright.... :)  (Jun 6, 2008 | post #4)

I think I made a terrible mistake

So, as per usual in the Midwest, we went straight from winter to summer. Yesterday it was so hot/humid I was starting to not feel well. I turned on the a/c at home (not central air, not exactly a window unit I live in an apt & it's a window unit built into the wall). Anyway, I remembered this morning that Janet said she made her infestation much worse by using the a/c at the hotel & 'blowing the mites around'. Yikes!! I didn't even think of that. Now, I'm in remission, have been feeling pretty good for a few weeks (despite a new diagnosis of rosacea, which, science is now pointing to mites being causative in that disease as well) so I hope there are no more mites in my environment to even be blown around. I still have borax in the carpets/couch, & plastic on the couch as well, but I don't know what I may have done by turning on the a/c. I didn't clean the filter so who knows what may be living in there. The only thing I did do was several months ago, I sprayed around the unit with Orange Oil (thanks, Welty!). I hope there was nothing in the unit, or the air blowing didn't stir anything up. I know this sounds ridiculously paranoid, & I realize Janet was still heavily infested when she had her incident with the a/c, but it made me think... and panic. Please everyone, send some good thoughts that I didn't do a bad, bad thing. Thanks for 'listening' to my rant!  (Jun 6, 2008 | post #1)

Remission... reinfestation?

Hi Itchy- I'm no doctor but I have experience with fighting mites. The key word there is 'generally' which is the medical communities way of protecting themselves just in case... Many doctors (the ones who will give you perm, anyway) do suggest 2 treatments. Also, it is just the experience of most posters here that once is not enough. As for curing with just one application, I am not sure I've read of anyone who did, I could be mistaken, though. Permithrin is a neurotoxin, and bascially classified as a poison. The reactions are systemic, which is why it can take days to start showing any reactive effects & also why they can last several weeks. Hope this helps. If I were you I'd do a 2nd treatment. Can't hurt, & it can definitely help. Good luck to you.  (Jun 3, 2008 | post #84)

how do i get rid of scabies once and for all? its driving...

Thanks, Al. I was thinking of going through the bags this weekend, either tossing some of the clothes that I (obviously) didn't miss during this time, & washing the heck out of the rest. I of course am assuming that's what caused the bumps- reaching in the bag -but I did pet my friend's dog for a while that weekend, too. I kinda gave that a thought, but, the dog is clean & she never said it had fleas/mange or anything. (course I just saw the dog 'scooting' in the yard this weekend, which could mean worms, yikes) Yes, it could also be the perm/sulfur/gosh only knows what else. Whatever it was, it left pretty quickly, thank the Lord. I will try your idea with the clothes. I am just sooo sick of being afraid of items in my own home! I'm in 'remission' & I just don't want to risk anything. Thanks again, Al!  (Jun 3, 2008 | post #219)

I agree with you Al. I have been wearing the same few shirts & pants for months, washing after every wear. I am scared to death of any clothes I wore during my beginning infestation that are now in bags. I opened a bag a month or so ago, it was half full & I put the contents in another half full bag to condense, and within a day or so my wrists/forearms had bumps. Only one of them itched, but, still, it had to be the clothes in the bag. Thank God I didn't put any on & wear them all day!! The bumps were gone within less than 2 weeks with some perm smeared on my arms (I know, I know) & daily applications of sulfur. Maybe it was some type of post issue, but, I don't think so. I never had any problems on my arms before, even at my worst. Well, I just wanted to add my 2 cents. You always have really good advice & information Al. Thanks for reminding us all of things we may not be thinking of.  (May 29, 2008 | post #211)

Oh, and the blackbird thing--- funny! But yet, not funny at all. I am fearful of animals as well now, thinking they can pick up on any leftover mite & it will just continue the infestation on & on....  (May 29, 2008 | post #24)

Hi Janet, I'm not comfortable saying I'm 'cured' as of yet, but, have had vast improvement since using permithrin in mid/late March. After that I think there was about 90% or more improvement & was only spot treating areas that had 'leftover' bumps. I have had 2 scares since then, with getting new bumps, I am not sure if it is a symptom of post scabies/treatment or what, neither time did it amount to very much as I jumped on it with sulfur & the 2nd time it happened I did full body perm for 24 hours. I'm in 'remission' to coin a phrase from Welty that I feel is appropriate. But I am grateful even for that. My life is slowly getting somewhat back to normal. I'm not out of the woods yet but I'm close. I wish you the very best in your search for a cure Janet. Continue to stay strong, I know it's hard, but I also know you can do it Janet. God bless.  (May 29, 2008 | post #23)

Acnomel

Hey Tick- Hmmm, I've not heard of that, but, I did use Pomada de Azufre which is also an acne cream with 10% sulfur. Apparently anything 6% or above is sufficient, if I remember correctly. I had alot of success with the pomada, and it's great cuz you can apply it straight out of the jar w/o mixing. A few posters have cured with sulfur, it is one of the oldest cures there is for scabies. It's a slow kill, and sulfur is harsh, but it helps with the crawlies, too! I say go for it, if you can get some.  (May 29, 2008 | post #2)

Sam, Scabies3, Welty, MK, Aha and all

Hi Bugged- I used Pomada de Azufre, it's an acne treatment sold here in the US, not sure if it is available where you are? In our Walmart & other pharmacy stores here it is in the ethnic section. I like it as it is premixed with a lanolin/petroleum base so can be used right out of the jar, no measuring/mixing. I used it full body for a while. Very drying. The usual recommendation is 3 days on, 3 off (while using other topicals or spot treating on the days off). I still use it as a spot treat to this day though I am 90% sure I am in remission. I also periodically slather my writsts/forearms with it as this is a place to pick up mites & they like to gather there. Hope you can find this product in Canada. Otherwise you can use MSM, it can be found in health stores or some pharmacies, but I am not familiar with how to mix it. Good luck to you!  (May 29, 2008 | post #64)

Janet- I feel so bad for you. Gosh, I don't even know what to say. You have been battling so bravely, so intelligently, and so diligently it just breaks my heart that you are suffering so much. I wish I had an answer for you, or something I could think of to help, but, I don't. I am praying for you though. I hope that Dr. Boote helps cure you. She sounds phenomenal. And yes, S3 (IttyBitty), go see her. You also have been fighting this way too long and it would be so great to see you cured. I just wanted to offer some support - good luck.  (May 28, 2008 | post #19)
