Rescue takes in big victims of economic crisis Reported by: Carolyn Scofield Email: [email protected] Photographer: Bruno Giglio Last Update: 10/08 6:47 am FELLSMERE, FL -- Pets often suffer the most when a family is struggling to pay the bills. Two friends on the Treasure Coast started a horse rescue two years ago. Debbie Allison-Cook and Susan Bonham met when Bohman adopted one of Cook's rescued horses. The women take in animals from all different backgrounds, retired racehorses, victims of abuse and more and more horses whose former owners can't afford to take care of them anymore. The group has placed 104 horses since they formed two years ago and they get more calls every week. "The saddest thing that we find is that the horses are a product of the environment we've created," says Allison-Cook. "We domesticated them, we make them rely on us for feed and for medical and when all is said and done and the economy turns downward, they're just as disposable as an old pair of sneakers." The two women pay for most of the expenses, but they appreciate any donations of feed and hay. All of their horses are free to good homes.
