Sunday liquor sales debated

The way liquor laws have been going lately in North Carolina, this should pass. And it's about time.  (Mar 29, 2009 | post #4)

AirTran to offer nonstop service to Orlando

As much tourist stuff as there is around Orlando, I'm really surprised they weren't doing this already.  (Mar 25, 2009 | post #10)

Theory of creationism has its share of holes

The best part of this thread is the poster named "Intelligent Design" making purely religious arguments. Creationism is not science. It is not falsifiable and predicts nothing. You are free to believe in it, but it should not be treated as science.  (Mar 25, 2009 | post #38)

InstaLetters for March 21

Judging from their performance, are you really concerned about losing Wall St. executives?  (Mar 21, 2009 | post #14)

A look back in time might serve our leaders well

I can understand how the letter writer can see this as a common sense solution. A family that is in financial troubles cuts spending and saves money that is not needed for necessities. However, consumer spending is what drives the economy. If I lose my job, I stop buying from businesses, large and small. The businesses get less revenue, they cut jobs, and there are even less people spending. It's a vicious cycle. This is why we need government to act as the spender of last resort in recessions. SOMEONE has to be spending money for businesses to recover. President Hoover tried cutting spending and raising taxes at the beginning of the depression and it was a disaster. Is everything in the stimulus bill worthwhile spending? Of course not. But deficit spending is a proven tool to jumpstart a slow economy.  (Mar 21, 2009 | post #7)

Can't Duke, UNC fans just get along?

Lincoln quote shows a side of president we may not know a...

Citizen, I'll tell you what he wants- someone other than himself to blame for his problems. It's not a violation of our consitutional committment to free speech, because the government is not involved. I would argue that a worthwhile experience here depends on some minimum standards. Would Osama Bin Laden be allowed to post here? How about Viagra spammers? I realize reasonable people can differ on the answer.  (Mar 18, 2009 | post #26)

RS, Lincoln could have avoided war by giving into the demands of slavers or letting the nation fall apart. Some things are worth fighting for.  (Mar 18, 2009 | post #25)

Bull, you are the reason people denigrate the South. Southerners who try to make something of themselves and participate in American society have to struggle against the stereotype that they are racists who are always refighting the Civil War, you do nothing but reinforce it. Many parts of our heritage are beautiful and unique and should be treasured. There are dozens of reasons that I think of North Carolina and miss it everyday. Some parts of our heritage are destructive. Those too must be remembered, as a warning.  (Mar 18, 2009 | post #22)

To the original letter writer: Look at the people who are supporting you. Is this the kind of support you want? Bull, you have no right to declare who is and is not a "true" Southerner. Saying nothing will never change your opinion reveals a lot about you. Rational people consider new evidence. Bull, you have the absolute right to be a racist. I will never support a law that abridges that right. However, the company that runs this forum has a right to choose who can use their service. They laid out the rules clearly, you agreed to them, and you broke them. If the moderators are serious about enforcing the rules, you will be gone very soon.  (Mar 18, 2009 | post #19)

Yes, I am profoundly grateful for the sacrifices of the soldiers who fought to preserve our country and make it great. War is always a tragedy and a failure, and I wish the Civil War could have been avoided. However, the southern states were unwilling to end slavery and attacked their government. Who do you think would have defeated the Nazis or stood up to communism or gone to the moon or created the internet? The republic of Texas? The Californian empire? Jokey example, but I'm glad the United States remained united. That's worth the blood of those soldiers.  (Mar 18, 2009 | post #18)

Who's your early favorite for GOP nominee in 2012?

This poll is for amusement only. And if it's not, it should be. Who could have predicted Obama would be the nominee in 2005?  (Mar 18, 2009 | post #2)
