1 dead, 2 injured in motel shooting

Alright, I don't know who you are, but you're obviously on the wrong board... you can't just bust up in here talking sense to people, it'll get'em all confused and angry-like. Surely you can somehow work a racist or class-based epithet in here? Because otherwise, most of the posters here won't have the slightest clue what you're talking about. Oh, and be sure to say something stupid about someone's mom too, that's a great way to get your point across. </sarcasm> But seriously folks- I'm afraid there are far too many people interested in keeping things the way they are for any real, positive change to take place. You're absolutely right on all counts, of course, but there are a lot of people and organizations whose entire existence is based on either banning or promoting gun ownership. The idea of dealing directly with the criminals who obtain firearms illegally and use them against other citizens simply isn't as high a priority for those organizations and people. If it were, they'd funnel all the time, effort, and money spent on ads and lobbying into funding more police and outreach programs. Since they don't, I think it's safe to say that it's not going to happen, and that's because their very existence depends upon the status quo.  (Jun 11, 2009 | post #20)

Deeds' victory sets up rematch

The only reason I went with Moran was because he spends so much time on the road driving... thus, he has seen first-hand the traffic problems we have around here. Mr. Deeds (heh) seems like a decent man, and I have no problem supporting his candidacy- I'm mostly just thrilled that jagoff McAuliffe had his a55 handed to him, though. Whatever people might think of Deeds and Moran, at least they've lived and worked in this state for years- they didn't just show up to try and win an election. Good job, voters... you sent that fool home in disgrace.  (Jun 10, 2009 | post #10)

Four injured when car hits 7-Eleven

Even a broken clock is right twice a day... finally, a story which fits Capt. Like/Love's mantra. Cellphone: 50.00 Monthly cellphone service plan: 80.00 Automobile: 3,000.00 Driving through the front of a 7-11 because you're too ignorant to tell the gas from the brake while yapping away on your cellphone: PRICELESS.  (Jun 8, 2009 | post #10)

Welding inspector admits falsifying reports, says he 'mad...

I'm very pleased to see some of the fine men and women of Newport News Shipbuilding here, explaining the immense sense of pride they take in their work... my grandfather worked his entire career in the yard, from helping lay the deck of the original Yorktown (CV-5) during his apprenticeship until August 1975, when he died of a heart attack running up the stairs to his office. He, too, took great pride in his work, and his service to NNS is a source of pride to our family. More's the anger, then, when I read of this incompetent asshat falsifying weld inspection reports... clearly, this mental defective had never heard the sad tale of the USS Thresher (SSN-593), lost on a test dive due to a faulty joint in a salt water pipe, causing the deaths of 129 men. This man's actions potentially endangered the lives of hundreds or thousands of sailors, and it is only due to the professionalism and diligence of other NNS workers that we can have any confidence that this individual's failures will likely not prove disastrous for our Navy. His punishment needs to be swift and stout- our nation cannot afford such incompetence in such an occupation.  (Jun 2, 2009 | post #16)

Exactly. These right-wing terrorists are not interested in the preservation of life... they are interested in POWER and forcing THEIR views on the populace. They cloak their evil in the guise of false piety- they claim they act in the name of God, but their actions speak to their true masters- Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, and other evil denziens of the far right. Schools on lockdown after burglary, shooting

Time to enact a "Castle Law" here in VA much like the one in TX... I doubt this homeowner will be charged, but our laws are such that he could be in serious trouble for defending his property. I'm glad the homeowner is safe, and that he was able to successfully defend himself and his property against these violent morons.  (May 29, 2009 | post #4)

Officials hope new licenses will reduce counterfeiting an...

Cue the "facepalm " picture... wow. You're absolutely right, they haven't improved squat- they've just made it EASIER to create a counterfeit license, thanks to this little "temporary permit" loophole. What a complete joke.  (May 29, 2009 | post #19)

Vick leaves Leavenworth, heads for home

Just a guess here, but I'd say it's probably because Mike literally had the world handed to him on a silver platter in his early 20s... money beyond his wildest dreams, no doors were closed to him, and that's something many, many people (myself included) will never experience. We put ourselves in his position and think "Man, if I got that kind of money just for playing with a ball, I'd build an orphanage and buy everyone in my family a house and a car..." and so on and so forth. Most of us see ourselves doing something responsible with that kind of money, because we've become accustomed to balancing our needs and desires with our financial resources. But think back to when you were in your early 20s... and imagine someone gave you some insane amount of money to play a game. Would you know how to handle the sudden massive influx of cash, and the fame that goes with your new job? I know I'd have made a complete hash of it... and I suspect that's true of most people here. None of this excuses the decisions Mike made which led to his downfall, of course. Each man is responsible for his own actions. But I'd say a little breathing room is warranted for him about right now... he screwed up BIG TIME, and I'd wager if he didn't know it before, he probably does now. Time will tell if he's learned his lesson, and the decent thing to do would be to give him the chance to prove it.  (May 20, 2009 | post #49)

Ok Mike, you served your sentence... you took your punishment like a man, which I respect. I expect you've likely learned at least one or two things during these past 19 months, and you've had ample time to work on pulling your head out of your a55. By now, you should know who your REAL friends are, and who's just out for a ride on the gravy train- stick with those who've stuck with you, and kick those other jokers to the curb. There is a VERY large group of people out there who are only too happy to help facilitate your downfall once again- do not give them that opportunity. There is another large group of people out there, several of whom are on this board in fact, who expect you to fail spectacularly. Prove them wrong, do not give them that satisfaction. I have no dog in this fight (heh), but I would much prefer to see you demonstrate that you are worthy of redemption and a second chance to do something positive with your life. You've got an amazing opportunity here, Mike. Don't **** it away. Best of luck, HH Observer- a fellow Newport News native.  (May 20, 2009 | post #29)
