"Shopping While Black"

shakes head* I even warned you to read the ENTIRE thing. Context is everything; it does your (very thin) "argument " no favors to cherry-pick small sections, then try to spin them in a manner you think will support your ignorant beliefs. For example, your quote has to do with profiling in general, not the use of that practice as it relates to minorities. Based on your ineffective response to my post, I believe you missed the section specifically devoted to Racial profiling: "Racial Profiling ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Racial profiling is an improper and illegal practice based on the mistaken belief that certain ethnic minority groups are more likely to shoplift than others. Because of this, misguided belief, store employees will focus their surveillance on the color of a customer rather than their conduct. Racial bias can blind store personnel and cause them to monitor only the ethic minorities and ignore the real source of inventory losses. Racial profiling eventually leads to a pattern of false theft accusations, wrongful detentions, and harassment when no real probable cause exists. The result is that a particular ethic group will be made to feel like they can't be trusted and are unwelcome in the store. African Americans and Latinos have called it “shopping while black or brown”. Unless the wrongful conduct is corrected by management, civil rights violations will occur and false arrest lawsuits will follow along with damaging the reputation of the retailer. Most retail inventory loss statistics have shown that the majority of shoplifters to be of the Caucasian race. To concentrate surveillance on minority customers is not only improper, but is an ineffective method of controlling shoplifting losses at most locations. The thought of racial profiling is distasteful. A 1999 Gallup poll confirmed that eighty-one percent of Americans disapprove of the practice. Despite this belief, the same poll indicated that seventy-five percent of African American men said they had been victims of racial profiling while shopping. These polls and other media reports are what give the term profiling such a negative connotation. In some circles, any mention of term profiling is tainted from the onset with distrust." Not a problem. As I have said, having worked in corporate security for a luxury retail corporation, I have years of experience in this sort of thing. Allow me to direct you to the information available on the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC) website at http://www.lpresea rch.org/cms/?q=nod e/275. Members of this organization include well-know jewelry, electronics, and clothing stores (http://lpresearch .org/cms/?q=node/5 ). Read for yourself what the experts have to say on this subject and why it is counter-productive to persist in the delusion that African Americans and other minority groups are somehow more apt to steal from retail stores than other groups. Go ahead and take your time. Be sure to read this information in its entirety; I believe you will find it both helpful and enlightening. And yes, WE will be waiting for YOUR response... - Heretic  (Apr 6, 2009 | post #59)

American owes African Americans, and everyone else, equal opportunity and a fair shake. Hell, the most patriotic thing in the world would be for Americans to try living up to the precips of the Constitution. If all men are created equal, as the Founding Fathers wrote, why can't they all be treated the same? Again, we have some moron who thinks African Americans are demanding more than their fair share when all this groups wants is an equal share. Why haven't you figured out the difference yet? - Heretic  (Apr 6, 2009 | post #58)

So, you're okay with irrational fear and the discrimination it breeds? Maybe this seems perfectly okay to you, but this is far from the accepted social norm in this country. In case you missed it, there are Federal laws against this sort of thing. The fact that these laws have been upheld in court should clue you in to just how marginalized this ignorant line of thinking has becomeYou say this as though thievery is an ethnic quirk, rather than human nature. For someone who uses the handle "Truth Teller", you sure have a knack for telling only about half of it. Using your twisted logic, European Americans should be banned from the banking and finance industry. They must ALL be thieves, considering the policies and practices some have pursued in driving this country into financial ruin. And do I even need to include people like Madoff? How about companies like Enron and Arthur Anderson? How about other events that have cost the taxpayer, events like the Savings and Loan scandal? Human nature, son, not ethnicity. People will usually take the easy way when presented with an opportunity to make money, even if that way is criminal. They don't need skin color to prompt themYou don't have to agree, but at the same time you shouldn't walk around in an African American forum spouting ignorant and racist bull, then act surprised when you are called on it. - Heretic  (Apr 6, 2009 | post #57)

Is it your intention to spin circular arguments, jumping from question to question every time an ignorant point of yours is shot down? Twisting words and changing topics in an attempt to find something to make a comeback with is sad and pitiful. Quit while you're behind and you may actually manage to retain some shred of dignity...or not. Trolls by definition have neither dignity nor shameAt least I can say that this was a small mistake in the tags I typed. Your flaw encompasses your entire "argument ", if you can even elevate what you have had to say to the level of a viable discussion. - Heretic  (Apr 6, 2009 | post #55)

This is just a stereotype born of ignorance and fear. Thieves come in all shapes, sizes and colorsTo insure a loyal customer base during these tough economic times, simply treat everyone the same: with friendly and helpful service. Making everyone as comfortable in your store as you can will insure your economic survivalExcellent advice on forum trolls! We'll be sure to keep that in mind. - Heretic  (Apr 6, 2009 | post #54)

Any time. Hopefully, you will now be free to seek knowledge rather than wallowing in ignorance. - Heretic  (Apr 5, 2009 | post #27)

People make assumptions about other people. This is the natural result of having very little information about them. Once more information is acquired, those assumptions should give way to facts. Stereotyping is simply persisting in the belief of the assumption in the face of evidence to the contrary. Do not defend the bias involved in this type of profiling by claiming it is "only natural" or that "everyone does it". Every intelligent person has the option of placing facts and knowledge over fiction and ignorance. The choice is theirs. - Heretic  (Apr 5, 2009 | post #19)

Again with the statistics, as though this somehow legitimized your bias. You are quoting CONVICTION RATES, not crime rates or even arrest rates. Anyone with even a basic understanding of incarceration rates in this country knows that African Americans are many more times likely to be held as a suspect in a crime and convicted of a crime, not to mention receiving much harsher sentences, than any other ethnic group. You are only highlighting the imbalances (based on class, race, etc.) inherent in our judicial system. Your "argument " does nothing to support your biased view of a particular ethnic group. If you want to bring the knowledge, be sure to make direct comparisons rather than fudging the numbers to make yourself look informed. - Heretic  (Apr 5, 2009 | post #18)

A troll trying to speak of others "looking like trolls"? Did the irony of that posts strike you before or after you hit the "post comment" button? :D - Heretic  (Apr 5, 2009 | post #17)

Been there, done that. I happen to have worked in corporate security for a national luxury retailer and seen the industry statistics. While the security teams for other area retailers wallowed in high theft rates and harassment lawsuits, we use our heads rather than our prejudices to do an effective job the right way. "Don't believe me?", you say? I don't have to doubt your word; I know first-hand that you are simply trying to elevate you own prejudices and paint them as logical and legitimate. What need is there to discredit an opinion like this, based on little more than projected bias? Truly, you should be embarrassed to have even bothered to post such a laughably idiotic opinion. - Heretic  (Apr 5, 2009 | post #16)

Considering AIDS had yet to appear anywhere in the Western Hemisphere, your juvenile attempt at an insult obviously didn't even have the strength of intelligence behind it. Nice try, but...no, it wasn't even a nice try, was it? How about a little education? You may want to go back and actually READ something about the events explored in that photo essay, and how people like him worked to improve even your stinking, tiny-brained corner of the world. - Heretic  (Apr 5, 2009 | post #7)

You'll need to explain how this old adage could apply in this case. The whole point of this article is to expose the manner in which people fool themselves, wallowing in ignorance rather than recognizing it and moving past it. - Heretic  (Apr 4, 2009 | post #3)

A janitor cleaning up MLK's blood from a balcony versus Michelle Obama meeting the queen of England.... Not really seeing the connection there, James. Are you Brits really THAT weirded out over the the Obamas visiting your country? - Heretic  (Apr 3, 2009 | post #3)
