At some point humanity decided that killing witches was wrong in spite of Jehovah's command to do so. What else in the Bible do you ignore? Do you decide which parts are still relevant all by yourself or do you depend on some religious authority (pastor, Pope, imam, rabbi, shaman, etc.)? Or maybe you understand modern morality as a function of society? (Mar 30, 2013 | post #6120)
So Biblical moral commandments are not absolute but instead are relative to the time and we have outgrown them. (Mar 30, 2013 | post #6119)
Christians argued on both sides of the issue and used the Bible to do so. Seems to me a truly inspired text should be impossible to misinterpret. I don't believe there is anywhere in the 4 gospels where slavery is condemned? (Mar 30, 2013 | post #6093)
Doesn't matter what word you use, the idea that a man can sell his daughter is just wrong. That you can't see how wrong it is speaks volumes about you. The entire section being referenced here is in Exodus as is part of the list of commandments being given by Jehovah to Moses. It continues on the to commandments to kill all witches. Which means that Jehovah believe witches are real and killing is acceptable. As this is a direct commandment, I assume you still believe witches are real and would willingly kill any you find? Or do you just pick and choose which parts of this book to follow and which parts to ignore? (Mar 30, 2013 | post #6089)
I thought at one time we might have a thread that documented some of these trolls and their known sockpuppets. "http://www.t opix.com/forum/rel igion/atheism/TIU3 LSN9QFADA5COC " Never got too far. (Feb 23, 2013 | post #39)
Should Billy Graham's legacy be rescued?
How much money does the U.S. government forgo by not taxing religious institutions? According to a University of Tampa professor, perhaps as much as $71 billion a year. ... — on property, donations, business enterprises, capital gains and "parsonage allowances," which permit clergy to deduct housing costs." Atheism requires as much faith as religion?
ReallyWhich is an ad hominemWhat I said was "You just described a deity who appreciates skeptical scientific thinking more than belief on blind faith." And you answeredBut "faith" is firm belief in something for which there is no proof, so actually "blind faith" would be redundant. And you totally ignored the content of my comment and tried to redirect the conversation by focusing on the word "blind". If that bothers you so much, leave that word off. It doesn't change the rest of the comment. So -- You just described a deity who appreciates skeptical scientific thinking more than belief on faith. (Feb 15, 2013 | post #154483)
Real Freethinkers Don't Try to Close Down Debate
We used to be better natured" you say. Okay, but when I was born "god" wasn't in our pledge nor any part of our national motto. So I say it was the breakdown of our government's secular foundations that has caused a lot of our ills. Your god has never been "marginalized ", but in today's world, all the other people's "gods" are demanding equal treatment, and you just can't stand it. No one has ever, EVER, stop kids from praying in school. (I bet a lot still do, just before every test. But it's not as effective as studying.) But in today's world, you can't demand that the school force other people's children to give your religion any special consideration, and you can't stand that either. (Feb 15, 2013 | post #22)
Atheism requires as much faith as religion?
I wonder how many people realize that this entire thread was originally only posted in the Topix "Atheism Forum" and only later did Topix add it to the "Top Stories" forum? Most atheists in this thread are seeing it from the "Atheism Forum" perspective and would naturally see theists as proselytizing where they are not wanted. (Feb 15, 2013 | post #154443)

Ad hominem is a sure sign that you have nothing on content. (Feb 15, 2013 | post #154441)
We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart. - H. L. Mencken
