Hello, Potty training trouble can be solved by keeping the dog on a leash tied to your belt when in the house. You can then observe for signs that the pup needs to go out, like sniffing circling, pacing, whining, nipping are a few. Once you notice signs then take them to the same door an say "Lets go potty" take them out and walk to the ONE designated spot. Stand there and do not let the dog decide where to go, this is not a walk or playtime, strictly for business. If they have to go bad enough the will go in that spot. Be sure to praise and have a treat with you to give the dog eveytime he goes potty outside. Once the dog goes outside, wait at least 5 more minutes to see if he need to go again. Make sure you do not make the time a playtime. Just stand there. Go inside and keep him tied to you, or in a crate. The only time you can correct the dog is if you catch him in gthe act and you may if he is leashed to you. Say NO! and clap your hands and take the dog outside to finish. Praise and treat! Hope this helps!  (Dec 22, 2008 | post #11)

Rat terriers are fun and good with children. I have a rat terrier she is 12lbs full grown. They are great with kids. Do not buy from a pet store they have a lot of health and socialization issues, also hard to housetrain. If you do get a puppy I would recommend socialization and obedience if it is going to be a childs dog. I am a dog trainer and I am stating a class above Tri-county Vet office in January if you would be interested. www.ptownhappytail s.com for more info Happy Puppy Hunting!!  (Dec 3, 2008 | post #4)

Happy Tails Dog Training in 2009

Hello communityproud, It's not to late if you are willing to do a little work with her. I could come to your house and work with her. I would instruct you on how to handle her around visitors. Desensitize her to what sets her off is it the doorbell? I could help you figure out a plan each time a voisitor enters what to do. I would probably only be an hour session for 20$ and you could do the rest on your own. The group classes are good for socalization and how to act around other dogs and people. Group classes could help also. e-mail me at [email protected] hoo.com if you are interested check out my website www.ptownhappytail s.com Thanks for your interest!  (Nov 25, 2008 | post #5)

Do you need a Dog Trainer?

Hello, That is Twig in the picture. She is a Rat Terrier. She is the best little dog, but I have worked with her. It is important when you get a puppy to make sure they are socalized to all kinds of people including children. Also is is good to expose them to as many places and noises as possibe. If puppies are raised with kids then they usually like them, if the kids are taught how to handle, approach them. Small dogs do not like kids who run up to them and grab them. Small dogs do not like people leaning over them. Twig is not a yapper but will alert bark if something is unsual, but it is just a loud shrill once or twice. The breed is very intelligent and active. She was potty trained at 4 months old and has never had accidents. If you e-mail me your address I could e-mail you info on choosing a puppy and info to get your training started. Thanks  (Nov 14, 2008 | post #5)

Any Dog Clubs in P-town??

Would you be interested in a club to get together once a month and discuss things to do to inform the community about dogs and things to do with your dogs, or just to have fun talking about our pets. Maybe so many dogs would not wind up in the shelters if the owners were better informed about dog behavior, training, socialization, etc.  (Nov 13, 2008 | post #8)

I wont ever say that

I say if they are crying for no reason "I'm going to give you something to cry about" I hated that phrase and I just used it the other day on my little girl who is the biggest drama queen ever!  (Nov 12, 2008 | post #48)
