Public education

There was a terrific show on CNN about gang violence and shootings in Chicago. The Chief of Police made a very poignant statement to the affect that they cannot be responsible for the overall well being of teenagers; they are not their parents, they are not responsible for their education, their social manners, their respect for life, or anything else along those lines. These are the responsibility of the parents. The Police are there to enforce the law. Teachers are in the same position; they are not there to solve social problems. So far we tax payers pay to have the students brought to school, counseled, fed, educated, and transported back home. The only real accountability of a school is to educate the students that want to be educated, not resolve social problems. We have other tax funded organizations that fulfill that role; and perhaps for the families that are dysfunctional and cannot meet their parental responsibilities, let’s reconsider the establishment of children’s homes as we had in the past. Schools are in place to educate the children that want to be educated, not handle social issues. No more school levies; no more requests for money. No more alternative schools within a district. We have GED programs to handle the students that don’t want to be in school and at a cost of $520 per GED diploma opposed to thousands of dollars required by the districts alternative schools.  (Aug 22, 2012 | post #1)

Centerville teen killed in Sugarcreek Twp. crash

That is a real shame; sounds like there was speeding and reckless operation involved. I see where there will be counselors available for friends of the student that died; and I hope there will be open and frank discussions about driving safely and not endangering others. Students need to learn from these events; not just mourn the passing of a friend. . Every day I see kids driving over the speed limit, texting, talking on the phone …. All the things that put the rest of us in danger. Please learn from this event!!  (Jun 12, 2011 | post #1)
