Oh to be a minority

The only thing that all these 'affirmative action' and minority groups do is PROMOTE racism. What ever happened to people getting jobs, promotions, college acceptances, etc based solely on personal aptitude?  (Jun 10, 2009 | post #32)

Tennessee and guns

Kudos to the lawmakers of TN for overriding the Gov veto. I still laugh when I hear people talking about 'guns in bars' in Virginia. Where are these 'bars'?? Thankfully, here in Va we are still allowed to open carry in restaurants that serve alcohol. Hopefully McDonnell will get the Gov seat and we can pass legislation allowing concealed carry in restaurants since Kaine vetoed the last attempt. And to CaptainAmerica...i f you are going to attempt to make statements regarding the risk factors, safety, etc of gun owners, please site your 'sources' for this information.  (Jun 10, 2009 | post #9)

Deeds' victory sets up rematch

IMHO I thought that Moran was the weakest canidate and would have been the easiest for McDonnell to defeat. That being said, I can't stand the NOVA political mentality and voted for Deeds. McAuliffe, IMO, was 'tainted' by the Clinton/BHO association. I am interested to see if Deeds abandons his 'Conservative Democrat' status and leans more left to appease his party...  (Jun 10, 2009 | post #13)

A sample menu for Georgia prison inmates on Friday, when ...

Damn...they eat better than my family. Sucks to think that inmates are getting meals, including dessert, when there are many families that consider Ramen noodles a staple because it is filling and cheap.  (Jun 5, 2009 | post #11)

Woman accused of hitting child with belt

I am 25 years old. When I was in elementary school, the Principal had the authority to spank a student if such a disciplinary action was required. We said the pledge of allegiance every day and the teacher said a morning prayer. My parents used everything from a belt to a switch from the tree in the backyard to a wooden spoon. I have never been arrested, have held down a full time job since graduating high school at 17, live on my own, and am in the process of finding a house to purchase. Now look at the generation shortly behind me...I know of kids who have THREATENED their parents as young as kindergarten age by saying my teacher said if you spank me to tell her because you are not allowed to do that, etc. And people wonder why society is going to hell in a handbasket. Wake up people.  (Jun 5, 2009 | post #8)

Confirmed case of swine flu at Grafton High School

Fairly significant as compared to what?? 2008 Census of the US shows a total population of 304,059,724. So, 36,000 is really a drop in the bucket as far as looking at 'statistics'. 36,000 deaths from flu equates to .01% - not 1%, .01%...decimal equivalent of .00001 of the ENTIRE United States Population. http://www.census. gov/popest/nationa l/asrh/NC-EST2008/ NC-EST2008-03.xls  (Jun 3, 2009 | post #16)

Private gun sales

Nice of you to post myths. According to the BBC News, handgun crime in the United Kingdom rose by 40% in the two years after it passed its draconian gun ban in 1997. http://news.bbc.co .uk/low/english/uk /newsid_1440000/14 40764.stm  (Jun 3, 2009 | post #163)

Agree on every citizen carrying a firearm. No license is required to openly carry a firearm. Perfectly legal in Virginia. Concealed carrying of a weapon requires a Concealed Weapons Permit.  (Jun 3, 2009 | post #59)

Police say abduction ended when neighbor knocked on door ...

Really? So tell me, who would own firearms if they are outlawed???? It wouldn't be the law-abiding citizens, it would be criminals. Stripping law-abiding citizens of their rights will do nothing to deter criminals. I would ENCOURAGE people to own guns. If all these criminals knew that more and more people were arming themselves, as it is their RIGHT to do, then the criminal may just think twice before a home invasion, robbery, rape, etc because they may just end up looking down the barrel of a gun.  (May 28, 2009 | post #22)

Virginia unemployment: Stimulus money for jobless

There need to be sticter guidelines for those collecting unemployment, food stamps, etc. As it is now, you just have to 'apply' for a few jobs a week to receive unemployment benefits. You can apply anywhere, regardless of whether or not they are hiring. Drop off an application, resume, etc and you get your 'paycheck'. It is ridiculous. And the food stamp fiasco is even more absurd. Anyone receiving any type of government assistance should be required to put in a full day's work, whether it be picking up trash on the streets, working at a local park, etc.  (May 20, 2009 | post #6)

Private gun sales

Very well stated commentary. As an American female, I take responsibility for my own safety and therefore exercise my right to keep and bear arms. I carry daily for personal protection with the hope that I will never have to use my firearm in self defense. Exercising your Second Ammendment right is a huge responsibility and should not be taken lightly. The government in no way has any authority to limit that right.  (May 20, 2009 | post #56)

Banning Guns to fight crime is like Banning Spoons to fight obesity.
