Socialism explained

How about translating those 1911 dollars into today's money and see how that looks. You have apples and oranges here.  (Apr 9, 2009 | post #59)

Socialism explained

I agree to the no cap philosophy, but I was being practical. There is no way congress would take the cap completely off. In fact, the figure being thrown around is a measly $125K. If we also increased the income tax on those same individuals you mentioned, as the president has indicated will happen, we could easily balance our budget as Clinton did his last four years. Also, presidents submit the budgets and congress approves and amends them. Additionally, republicans controlled both houses from 1994 to 2006, and the Senate during Reagan and Bush I. Remember Bob Dole, Senate Majority Leader? 98% of our national debt falls in the hands of the three men I mentioned and Bush Jr. created half of the $11 Trillion.  (Apr 9, 2009 | post #57)

Show me figures that show Obama has spent anywhere near the 5 trillion in debt that bush created. By the way that $700 billion belongs to Bush. It happened BEFORE the election. Also this budget year also belongs to Bush. Obama's budget for 2010 is still being reconciled between the House and Senate. All of this years deficit until September 30 is owned by the bush/cheney regime. Sorry, that's how it works, all of these expenditures are in reaction to the failures of the Bush Administration. It's about time we started to spend some money on things besides war. "It's the ECONOMY, Stupid!"  (Apr 9, 2009 | post #42)

Socialism explained

Too bad you conservative types don't understand WHY these programs are in so much trouble. I'll clue you in. Social Security: Borrowed from to the hilt by Reagan, Bush I and il dubya to the tune of nearly 5 trillion dollars, which is the paper surplus value, to make it appear their budgets were in balance. It would be solvent for 30 to 40 years and can be forever if only that maximum level of contributions was raised from $109K to $150K or even higher. Medicare: 1, It's underfunded; the rate should be equal to that of Social Security. 2, The insurance companies have run the entire medical system in the USA into the ground. By the way Medicare cost me over $1400 per year. I am paying for sick people, as I am relatively healthy. But if I get sick, it will be there for me. I couldn't buy private insurance for anything close to that. And none of those countries would exchange their socialized medical care for the fiasco we have here. Our Parks: Bush cut funding each of his 8 years in office and even attempted to privatize them as he wanted to privatize Social Security. That will change. Education: Public type. We all know the single biggest joke of the entire bush/cheney regime has been No Child Left Behind. Why? Because Bush, who dreamed it up, refused to provide the funding for the states to implement it. It was his second biggest failure. The first being that $5 trillion he personally added to the national debt. By the way, of not for the stimulus bill, you would see many of our police and firefighters in the unemployment line soon. That, too would have resulted in another republican failure and crime would skyrocket even more than it has. So all the failures you listed can be attributed to these. Lack of government oversight in the business and financial sectors. Lack of paying the bills, except for the last 4 years of Clinton, for thirty years. The belief that if you give more money to the rich through tax giveaways, it somehow will magically trickle down to all of us. Paul, we tried all this crap and none of it worked for more than a two year period. That's when the greed takes over and no one wins except the wealthy and big business. Additionally, you still do not comprehend that social programs do not a Socialist Nation make. That would require the nationalization of all capital ventures in the country. Something even liberals do not want. Only a tiny minority as far left as you are right would want to see that happen. Thank God that minority is even smaller than yours.  (Apr 9, 2009 | post #39)

Cigarettes singled out

Right, Amy, we need a sugar and fat tax. Unfortunately, there are more eaters than smokers. Imagine that uprising!  (Apr 9, 2009 | post #3)

Socialism explained

You left out the granddaddy of them all, Corbin, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. First of all, Social Programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, Unemployment Insurance, Police and Fire Protection and even the dreaded Socialized Medicine, which the right fears more than the wrath of God, do NOT make a Socialist Nation. For that to happen all businesses and financial interests have to be brought under the direct control of government. This is something that We, the People, would not allow to take place. Although there is a small segment of the population that would love to see our name changed to The United Socialist States of America and the death of capitalism, that far-out-whacko-lef t movement is far smaller than the equally far-out-radical-ri ght, who would have big business run the country (as it essentially did under bush) and a truly fascist state.  (Apr 9, 2009 | post #1)

'New jobs' will follow plant

WEll, Daniel, you forgot the jobs created by the influx of dead bodies to our local funeral homes. We will soon see which of our politically elected officials would rather line their pockets with Rubino money than serve the wishes, needs and welfare of the citizens, who elected them. I cannot wait to vote them into joblessness.  (Apr 9, 2009 | post #2)

Race remark isn't fair

Dave, you are way off base here. I quote from the Gallop Poll: "The high percentage of the black vote going to Obama is not unusual. Gallup polling estimated that John Kerry received 93% of the black vote in 2004, and Al Gore received 95% in 2000. So it may be that black voters are making the (correct) self-observation that they would be voting for the Democratic candidate regardless of his or her race, meaning that Obama's particular race is not a deciding factor for them." Clinton took the black vote as did Jimmy Carter.  (Apr 8, 2009 | post #63)

Race remark isn't fair

Megan, please don't expect these narrowminded people to explain racism, liberalism, socialism or totalitarianism, because they have no idea what those terms really mean.  (Apr 8, 2009 | post #47)
