Can a convicted felon be a sheriff?

The answer is yes. Although state and federal laws bar felons from possessing firearms, the constitution doesn't require a sheriff to carry a weapon. Since sheriff is a constitutionally created position, any changes to the job requirements must be made through an amendment to the state constitution. state law doesn't bar a convicted felon from being elected as a county's top law enforcement officer. There would be certain instances where prior "felonious convicts" or other "reformed probationers" may have their rights restored, case expunged, expelled, sealed or otherwise "removed from reasonable disclosure". if you have a felony on your record the best thing you can do is go through the process of getting a pardon from the state where you committed the crime. Every state offers a pardon from the Gov's office. There are only a few states that offer expungement of criminal records. Note: a pardon does not seal or erase a conviction. A pardon is the governor¬ís forgiveness of the crime you committed and is noted with your criminal record.  (Jan 13, 2011 | post #1)

There are people who have committed felonies who have changed their lives for the better and there are people who have never had any charge who change their lives for the worse every day. Voters have a right to decide. Former Sheriff Ronald Hewett was sheriff one day and is now serving time in prison. There are people with clean records who are more corrupt than some people with felonies in their past. The government should not take away my right to decide.  (Jan 13, 2011 | post #103)

when you go to the polls, write in Dave Miller for Clay County Sheriff. He has a plan to rid remaining corruption and serve the people the way those elected are supposed to. He also plans to have a cold case investigative team in place and producing results within the first year in office. http://www.faceboo k.com/profile.php? id=1065633992  (Jan 13, 2011 | post #31)
