Alameda cop kills police dog that wouldn't let go
Probably a good thing to shut down the Alameda K-9 program till they get a handle on this. "The animal is the second Alameda police dog to die this year, prompting the department to temporarily suspend its K-9 unit beginning immediately as part of its investigation. Just two dogs remain in the unit." According to Contra Costa Times, the dog was a Belgian Malinois, and "...Another Belgian Malinois died in May after its handler left the dog in a vehicle for more than three [hours?] while he attended a training exercise." http://www.contrac ostatimes.com/sear ch/ci_14020466 (3 hrs ago | post #14)
Mare Island built. Mariano G. Vallejo, SSBN 658. Her steel-reinforced sail or "conning tower" should remain as a landmark, visible from the Vallejo side. This monument represents a view that was once commonplace, with myriad ships in various stages of construction, repair, testing, and resupply visible on the Mare Island waterfront. People who do not or did not live here during those times have no idea. Mr. Keadjian has the soul of a fire plug to suggest there will not be a place on the waterfront for this prize. Hang him, boys. Along with the horse he rode in on. (Nov 14, 2009 | post #3)
VALCORE asks Council to cut, not end subsidy
Interesting to see someone making a wrong guess about who might be posting under the moniker of Golden. I'm guessing that "Sally" is a male PSU employee. One of the gang of people who actually had a direct hand in bankrupting Vallejo, and then fruitlessly spent a lot of money trying to prevent the city from being correctly declared bankrupt by the Federal Judge. Talking about wasting our money, we would be wasting our time reading nonsense posted by "Sally" and her colleagues. (Nov 8, 2009 | post #11)
VALCORE asks Council to cut, not end subsidy
Some folks may think of Valcore as a business not making a profit, but I see it as a very nice place to take recyclables without a lot of hassle and without having to drive across town or across county lines. They are a non-profit, and they actually employ a few people. I think of Valcore as a service we pay for through exorbitant garbage fees, but of course the garbage company is making a profit, well above and beyond what they might be making if they didn't have a monopoly granted by Mayor Intintoli and his gang. For the next year or so, they could freeze the garbage company employee and management salaries, and keep Valcore operating to provide really nice services for citizens of Vallejo. Why won't they do that? (Nov 8, 2009 | post #9)
Gomes, Brown Sunga win Vallejo council seats
Gomes has represented the taxpayers by bringing out the details during council discussions so folks know what's going on. She has participated in a long succession of 5-to-2 votes, where the 5 votes were usually unfavorable to taxpayers and the 2 were Gomes and Schivley, voting to give citizens the services they pay for and to keep folks from having to pay ADDITIONAL FEES AND TAXES to support overly generous employee compensation packages. Vallejo needs Stephanie Gomes and prudent taxpayers recognized that fact, and as a bonus, they replaced one big stumbling block with newcomer, Marti Brown. Brown will do a better job for taxpayers than the incumbent she ousted. (Nov 4, 2009 | post #18)

Not Tony Pearsall. Just someone who challenges the nonsense you post in defense of unsustainable PSU contracts. (Nov 3, 2009 | post #374)

Yapping lap dogs? You sir, are a bogus BS'er. Why hide your light under a bushel? Or a fireman's hat? You know exactly what was in this deal, and you're trying to spin it away from the nonsense that resulted in the council shooting it down. Tell us the complete details of this deal, including "firefighters paying for part of their health care" so we can all see exactly why the city council shot it down. If it was really such a good thing, then you could propose it as "a starting point" for negotiations now. (Nov 3, 2009 | post #367)
Congratulations Tramky, Gee, Sam, Dockmaster, XMI, gun metal blue and others who posted in favor of drydock reuse. Last night's Planning Commission moved the project one giant step forward. (Nov 3, 2009 | post #4)

Silas has been doing a great job substantiating my claims, but your selective memory also seems to affect your selective attention. You didn't know what you were talking about and you recommended a bad deal as a starting point for the new CM to begin with negotiations. To lead the horse to water, perhaps you can answer a safety question. What's the allowable commute radius for Vallejo firefighters and why? What was the demand for the commute radius in the Thompson deal? (Nov 3, 2009 | post #349)

If you don't know what you're talking about, then how can you support the Thompson deal? Why do you say it would have been a good starting point for Tanner when you don't know what you're talking about? You selectively remembered something about Henke and Hiddenbrooke? Go ahead, tell us the rest of the deal and answers to your questions will be self evident. (Nov 2, 2009 | post #344)
Revival at dry docks could bring 120 jobs
There is good reason for people to be concerned, because in the bad old days, ship dismantling was a horrible operation. But that was then, and since then, there have been new regulatory agencies created to monitor and ensure that the old mistakes are not repeated. And there are new technologies for containing and minimizing hazardous materials. For the proposed Mare Island projects, noise and environmental hazards are specifically addressed. The proposals look very good for controlling and preventing airborne contamination. And occupational safety has come a long way in the last 50 years. They say there will only be a day shift, so noises shouldn't disturb anyone at night. The State and Fed also have an interest, as well as many of us who walk the waterfront. The whole plan looks like a good use for the Mare Island drydocks. All who are concerned should attend the Planning Commission meeting Monday evening, November 2, 7 PM at City Hall. That's tonight. You don't know the details but you think the deal Thompson brought from the fire union to the council might have made a good starting point? As I recall, the deal was unacceptable because it compromised the safety of Vallejo citizens, offered up a gift of public funds to the fire union, and increased the firefighter benefits as well as extending an unaffordable contract. Not a good place to start. (Nov 2, 2009 | post #334)

Sure, I'll give it a shot... I think it's REALLY interesting. But first, let's take a look at Thompson's deal. Do you remember that deal? Why don't you spell out the details of that "agreement " that was shot down by the city council? Then we will discuss why the new CM couldn't use it as a starting point. (Nov 1, 2009 | post #328)

Tanner was brought in to balance the budget. It may seem like a "huge rush" to you, but don't you think the union could have come to "the table" and started the process in four months time? Four months would be plenty of time to at least begin the process, but what were the fire union leaders doing during that time? They were dragging their feet and trying to stir up the citizens to join them in their attacks against city hall. During the four months leading up to BA, the union leaders refused to consider anything other than their boneheaded contention that the city was screwing with them and hiding money. So much for your huge rush. (Nov 1, 2009 | post #327)

According to the Grand Jury report, the chief denied responsibility for decisions that affected overtime and impacted the budget. He failed to exercise leadership, allowing the union president to make the decisions. Looks like a conflict of interest sanctioned by the chief. I think he should have been fired a lot sooner, but we all liked him because he was a nice guy. Good for his employees, but bad for taxpayers. How about them Bears!! (Nov 1, 2009 | post #326)
