Scabies and kids. Not a good combo!

A new month, hopefully closer to the end of this journey. The kids and I have not had a positive bite in close to a month now. I have slowed down the washing of sheets to every 3 days. I can't go longer than that....still so paranoid! I had a vet visit for the dog today and that has to be canceled. Two out of 3 kids are sick and puking. Sucks! I did, however, order a test kit online to determine if either of my dogs has the MDR1 mutation. If they come back negative then I'm going to start them both on ivermectin. If it's positive, possibly moxidectin? I realize I'll have to order it from overseas and I'm okay with that. I am fairly certain the dogs have some type of mite as my son who seems to be the most sensitive to them. Every time he touches the dogs he instantly gets red, bumpy (like bites) and itchy. Last night I freaked out and put on permethrin as they looked like scabies bites. They showed up quite suddenly and all over! Though, the permethrin really helped stop the itch almost instantly and this morning there are no noticeable signs of bites. Next Monday we leave for 4 days so I plan on putting down some borax or something on our furniture and carpets just in case there are residual mites.  (Apr 1, 2013 | post #56)

Have you tried mixing sulfur with some conditioner (to make a 10% solution), putting on a shower cap, and leaving it on overnight? Use Vaseline or permethrin around your scalp just in case they decide to make a run for it. I did this a couple of times when I thought that I had them in my hair and it helped a lot. I'm so glad you aren't as itchy! A new month, hopefully meaning closer to the end. Unfortunately, I have to cancel my vet appointment today. Two out of 3 kiddos are puking so that means a definite no go. I did, however, order a kit to test if either of my dogs have the MDR1 mutation to see if it's safe to give my dogs ivermectin. I am fairly certain they have some type of mite. My son INSTANTLY gets bites, red and itchy. I have been putting on permethrin (nervous paranoid mama), and it gets rid of it all instantly. Which, never happened before when we had full blown scabies.  (Apr 1, 2013 | post #457)

I did read that link VSS. :) Very helpful, and I remember coming across it at one of my lurking sessions. I'll keep it in my favorites for now and come back to it in a few days. I have to wait until Monday because I'm taking him to the military vet on base. It's 1/2 the price (I know, my dog's health is not based on a number, but it's what I can afford).  (Mar 29, 2013 | post #51)

Thank you. Now I'm all sorts of confused. :/ I do know that we DID have scabies. We have not been affected for 3 weeks since we did the last dose of permethrin and Ivermectin. My dog though.....I haven't been treating him at all except washing him in some special soap. I kick myself for not realizing it sooner. He has patches of hair coming off on his belly and legs, skin darkening, crusty areas, he's always biting himself, and he stinks something awful. He also has hypothyroidism, so I guess I just assumed that this was due to that and his meds not working. This makes so much sense now. It has happened 3 times in the last week that when my son even touches the dog he instantly gets scratchy like crazy on his arms. I put him in the bath right away and wash him with sulfur soap and that really helps to stop the itch. I have no idea if that's because of scabies mites or something else. Monday can't come fast enough for his vet visit. I'm so done.  (Mar 29, 2013 | post #47)

Oh God! I'm so sorry that happened. :( Bet it was terrifying. I'm gonna hop on in this thread. Seems like support is something we all need right now. Still plucking away at these suckers. Just found out that my dog has big problems with these mites as well, I'm thinking that is how we keep getting reinfected with these things.  (Mar 28, 2013 | post #453)

Thanks for a big dose of reality. I guess I was using the wrong terms with "medical establishment. " I guess I could say Google says it's impossible. lol I'll definitely have to talk to the vet on what to do effectively. Have you ever tried Ted's Dog Mange Cure from Earth clinic? Making a dip out of hydrogen peroxide and borax? I don't want to bombard them with harmful chemicals, but at the same time I want this gone!  (Mar 28, 2013 | post #41)

Oh, from reading on here I know that isn't true, I just wish the medical establishment would get up with current info and stop saying that they can't. Just need to get the dogs on some meds, keep up with the dips, keep up with the vacuuming. I'm going to be getting a kennel for my big guy and they are both gonna be kennel bound when they're inside. Sounds harsh, but I need this crap gone. I'll still let them outside often. I just don't want them to keep reinfecting us until I know they are gone.  (Mar 28, 2013 | post #38)

I now know that it is 100% my dog. My son's arms got all red and itchy and raised bumps the other night. I thought that was the beginning of the scabies again so we did Permethrin (this was Monday night). The itching instantly stopped. Well, tonight, before I could put the dog up, my son was playing on him and touching him and lo and behold his arms got super itchy with bites showing up. He's in the tub right now. I'm going to keep my dogs segregated until their Vet appointment next week. I know we did have scabies in the beginning. My sisters were diagnosed with them. But, I think that this last power push to get rid of them worked (maybe too wishful thinking? Only time will tell), but these crop ups we keep getting are from the dogs. I did read that canine scabies can live on humans for upwards of 3 weeks and then die off. I haven't found much literature about human scabies infecting dogs except that it's "impossible. " Not sure what the scenario is here, but I'm hoping it has a good ending!  (Mar 27, 2013 | post #36)

I will. I can't do both of them together, so I booked 2 separate appointments for them. I did dip them in a borax and hydrogen peroxide treatment and let that dry on (Ted's remedy or something like that). You know, thinking back, my son started getting bites and super itchy this last time right after loving and playing on the dog too. I'm trying not to jump to conclusions, but if it is from him, what a great thing it would be to get this gone!!!  (Mar 27, 2013 | post #35)

It's my dog!!!! Holy crap. I thought I was treating them, though only externally. My dog has started smelling so foul lately. I looked up mange online and lo and behold all his signs are of sarcoptic mange. He has a severe case of hypothyroidism, so I assumed this was from that. Shit!!! No wonder we keep getting them. I'm booking an appt with the vet asap. He's a boxer/mastiff mix, I'm pretty positive he has no collie breed in him at all. I obviously would like to save my $$ as I have 2 dogs and just give them oral ivermectin I have, but I think I'm gonna have to suck it up. My other dog is showing no signs of this at all though.  (Mar 27, 2013 | post #33)

This is a great post. I have been battling scabies, and even though we get rid of them for a bit they always come back. For some reason I started researching mange as my dog's hair is starting to fall out and he stinks like no tomorrow and lots of crusty areas. He also has hypothyroidism that has been difficult to control so I assumed it was just that. Though, this makes SO MUCH sense!!!! I'm booking an appt with the vet for some meds asap. I have Ivomec here, and we have not done any sort of heartworm meds for about 6 months now, I'm just nervous about giving it to them without the vet knowing. Thank you so much. :)  (Mar 27, 2013 | post #5)

The progress ebbs and slows so much. You think you're there, then these suckers throws you right back. Last night my son started itching the shit out of his arms. To the point where he was leaving scratch marks. I have yet to actually see any bite marks, I have no idea what is causing that. I gave him some children's benadryl last night and it helped. Our perm rashes seem to be improving a lot. I learned that applying coconut oil was aggravating it, not helping so I stopped. I bought some Eucerin and it has helped. Every time something happens I keep asking myself, what am I doing wrong??? I was talking to my MIL (one of the only people who know) and she couldn't fathom why I was having to work so hard to get rid of them. She got it when she was a kid, used the cream, and they were all healed. :/  (Mar 25, 2013 | post #31)

Permethrin treatments-- how long should you wait before t...

Definitely do another treatment. There are various life cycles that you must get rid of in order to get them gone. One treatment will get rid of the current live mites, but you still have eggs under the skin. That is the exact mistake I've been doing the past 3 months until the middle of Feb when I started to wage war. Definitely do one or 2 more treatments on EVERYBODY. The rashes are generally delayed, so it might not be for a while unitl you start seeing bite marks. If the perm makes you nervous, especially on the littles I would start doing sulfur lotion/ointment on the kids and everyone. It's not a quick fix, but if you keep it up it will also help with the mites. Also have to mention the cleaning aspect of it. Gotta cover everything and keep everything clean.  (Mar 23, 2013 | post #11)

Thanks for the info RK in the house. I think though, until things come back really bad for us (praying they don't), I am not going to do the ivermectin (we actually took the Ivomec brand) or even considering Eprinex again. I did not like the side effects for myself or the kids. But it DID work!!! We have been doing Epsom salt baths with lavender oil and some TTO, and wow what a difference that has made to my skin. I am going to keep up with it. I'm also going to be ordering some cocoa butter and Shea butter and make some homemade lotion. :)  (Mar 23, 2013 | post #30)

Thank you. :) I think we are not going to treat again at this time. We all have wicked dry skin, almost flaking, itchy and painful from the permethrin. It's pretty bad. It's been a full month of treatment. I'm going to let our skin heal. If I feel the need we will continue with the oil and DE for my dd and then the sulfur lotion for the rest of us. We live in the desert right now so it's wicked dry and starting to warm up. I grew up in MA and so I can fully say how jealous I am that you have snow! It snowed once this year here. I hate the heat. But I can fully understand your frustration. I hope that all the hard work pays off for you! Bet your booty too that as soon as DH walks back in the door he is getting doused head to toe in permethrin. Just in case!  (Mar 21, 2013 | post #26)
