Rhode Island debates changing its name

Well, that's absurd. Maybe next we should consider changing the name of "cotton. " After all, like Rep. Almeida said, it "invite(s) memories of the... slave trade." Our state played a shameful role in the international slave trade, as did much of the rest of our country. That however has nothing to do with the name. Plantation was a word long before some wealthy Dixie farmers decided to force generations of Africans to toil on them. Not to mention, can we really afford to reprint all of our official documents right now?  (Jun 26, 2009 | post #1)

Dick Cheney media offensive all about fear of prosecution?

I find Clinton easier to understand if one views him as our last moderate Republican president. There was some left leaning fiscally, but overall he was more in line with Reagan than say FDR. And to the other recent posters in this thread, thank you! It seems rare to find anyone intelligently discussing politics without just resorting to their preferred party's talking points around here. Skeptic, I like your take on Marx. That's the real problem, as I see it anyway, socialism could only work in a system where altruism from elected officials was rewarded. I for one would love to see it tried someday, I don't think it's ever been honestly implemented.  (Jun 10, 2009 | post #130)

Did Carrie Prejean's Mother Have a Lesbian Affair?

Well, my apologies then. Too many blatant homophobes in the thread, I shouldn't have lumped you in. Hitler was a socialist in name only. The Nazi party collaborated outright with bankers and industrialists, and only seized the private property of those who wouldn't go along. Socialism was a popular movement at the time, and the National Socialists just appropriated the term to cash in on it. Besides, militarism and imperialism are hardly the tenets of the left. Socialists (real socialists, not fascists) aren't that interested in conquering other countries, most of us just want more equitable lives for the people in our own.  (Jun 10, 2009 | post #173)

Choosing Hell. Why?!!!

Check out the ones at this link; http://foo.ca/wp/c hick-tract-satire/ Hilarious. Also Jello Biafra packaged one called "Devil Doll" by comic artist Dan Clowes with one of his spoken word albums. I can't find it online, but it's hilarious and spot on.  (Jun 10, 2009 | post #15056)

Choosing Hell. Why?!!!

And again with the mature arguments. This basically boils down to "all of your logic and reasoning made me uncomfortable, so I'm going to call you gay!" Will the playground arguments never cease? And, just to answer your question, no I'm not. Happily married to a woman actually, coming up on our one year anniversary. Thanks for asking though.  (Jun 10, 2009 | post #15055)

Bob, I LOVE Jack Chick comics! I collect those from truck stops, they're the best. If there's any better argument for atheism, and against the evolution of certain strains of our population, I can't think of one.  (May 29, 2009 | post #15005)

Mancow: Waterboarding Gave Me Chest Pains

Yes, that's right, EVERY SINGLE liberal posting here secretly wants to waterboard you and yours. That's what we're all holding out for. I love the projection from you people. Most liberals I know are actually opposed to the inhumane treatment of anyone, whether they disagree with them politically or not. You're just upset at the notion of torture when it's not directed against brown people.  (May 29, 2009 | post #187)

No, it probably has something to do with her enormous Adam's apple. Face it fundies, your Eva Braun of the 21st century used to be a dude. I'm guessing it was the hormone replacement therapy that drove her so bat$#!t insane.  (May 29, 2009 | post #186)

Did Carrie Prejean's Mother Have a Lesbian Affair?

I'm sorry, other than showing where your mind tends to wander when discussing others sexuality is there any point to this comment? I understand you may enjoy the flush you get picturing homoerotic fascistic military intrigue, but it's a bit off topic, wouldn't you say? Or do you think because a certain number of Hitler's officers were homosexual that that is some kind of explanation? Ya know, I hear quite a few of them were left handed as well. Makes one wonder... well nothing 'cause it's about as relevant as who some of them liked to battle their bulges with. I also find it curious that you would choose this anecdote to illustrate your point. After all, in this story Hitler is taking the position you seem to be advocating for. In the future when making off topic points it might be better to consider whether or not they seem to contain open praise for Adolf Hitler before hitting "post."  (May 29, 2009 | post #166)

Mancow: Waterboarding Gave Me Chest Pains

Yeah, stupid liberals. You forget, The "C" in CIA stands for "comfort. " When they strap someone to a plank and simulate drowning them 183 times they do it with the utmost ergonomic consideration. Why, some terrorists report back a spa vacation like experience. Or, they babble incoherently 'cause they were brutally tortured into confessing to made up plots just to make the water stop.  (May 28, 2009 | post #25)

I think you're half right, but Cheney isn't exactly warm and fuzzy. Which is to say, no amount of soft lighting and puff piece journalism would make him likable. Hiding in an undisclosed location is probably the best thing Cheney can do for his popularity.  (May 26, 2009 | post #37)

TOPLESS DOUGHNUT SHOP Waitress reportedly outside with no...

Yeah, the ACLU only protects left wing loons. That's why they filed an amicus brief in Rush Limbaugh's drug case in support of him shielding his medical records. That's why they're often found filing briefings in support of right wing extremist groups (KKK, National Alliance) right to assemble. They're just sitting out there in their secret lair waiting to see the "liberal " signal light up the sky when Commissioner Pelosi needs them again.  (May 26, 2009 | post #56)

Exactly. I just don't understand why you treat it like a partisan issue? The national security state is a beast, no matter which imaginary letter we put after the figureheads name on a ballot. This "nyeah, well democrats are doing it too" line does nothing to address the real problems.  (May 25, 2009 | post #21)

Yeah, the CP USA are a bunch of idiots. Have been for decades. If Obama were really all that radical we might see a different defense secretary, and secretary of the treasury. Think hiring on all of Goldman Sachs is the road to socialism? I'm sure they're anti-capitalist to the core. Keep in mind the media that promoted him relentlessly is controlled by a handful of billionaires. If Obama were a threat he'd be as marginalized as Kucinich, no matter how pretty a smile he has. Obama's taz plan returns rates on the top earners to the same level Reagan taxed them in 1984. Was St. Ronnie of Tinseltown a socialist too?  (May 25, 2009 | post #128)
