Gabapentin Withdraws. How long will it last?

Hi JII, You might want to get a "Magnesium RBC" blood test to see where your magnesium levels are. I just got my test results back today ... RBC was 4.54 within normal range 4.3 to 5.7, ... reference range for magnesium 1.5 to 3.1 mine was 1.9. Magnesium RBC results reflect intracellular stores and general homeostasis of Magnesium. I have medicare and got a physical which covered the cost of the test. In the mean time try a Epson Salts soak 5 cups epson salts in a tub full of hot water and soak for about 20 minuites a couple of times a day. See if this doesn't help with your symptoms. If you read my post just above yours you can see I mentioned that gabapentin depletes magnesium. I supplement with 1000 mg. magnesium every day. This gets rid of my headaches anxiety depression I've got my appetite back, no more leg cramps, less irritability. Check out Dr. Carolyn Dean on the internet she has servral good recomendations for magnesium supplements. Lots of good stories about the wonders of magnesium, ask her a question and she will refere you to a facebook magnesium advocacy group where you can get answers to your questions about the Magnesium RBC blood test, which are the best types of magnesium supplements, other peoples stories about their experiences with magnesium. It continues to grow with awareness about magnesium with new members every day, I encourage you to take a look at this information. My heart goes out to you as I went through the same "god awful" withdrawal with Gabapentin before I started supplementing with magnesium. I have been supplementing with magnesium since the begining of october 2012. And became "gabapentin free" on October 11, 2012. Good luck.  (Feb 27, 2013 | post #127)

You should reinstate to 1200 mg. if you can handle this. Then do a proper taper, reduce by 10% every month. There are many fine magnesium supplements. See:http://drcarol yndean.com/resourc es.html Jigsaw I like and take it every day, howeveer you ahould take it slow at first, you can do epsom lalts soaks 20 minuites each, and a mixture of 1/2 tsp in 4 oz of water and swish this around in your mouth and spit it out. 2 Epsom soaks a day and use the mouth wash 4 times a day, be patient it may take 3 or 4 days for the magnesium to build up sufficiently to give you some relief from the withdrawal symptomes, then I would suggest the Jigsaw magnesium w/srt this magnesium supplement does not cause diarea, start out with 1 tablet for a couple day to see hou you fee, after 4 or 5 days if there are no ill effect then increase it to 2 a day.  (Feb 24, 2013 | post #120)

Gabapentin

Start with a 10% taper and hold for a month, and then drop 10% more repeat this untill you are off the Drug. Allso taking a magnesium supplement, magnesium chloride is a good one. google magnesium supplement there are plenty of them. Don't take magnesium oxide it only absorbes about 4%, don't take the magnesium supplement if you have kidney problems. Go slow on the magnesium supplement, start out taking only 50 mg. the usual preperation is a powder you put in water, sip this solution slowly don't gulp it down. The reason I'm suggesting magnesium is gabapentin depletes magnesium and some vitamins, do a google for gabapentin depletes vitamins and minerals. Check out Dr. Carolyn Dean.  (Feb 18, 2013 | post #2)

denise hi, How much gabapentin were you taking. You should be able to reinstate your gabapentin and reduce the withdrawal. Once you are stable start your Taper at 10% or less for example if you are taking 1200 mg. a 10% taper would be to cut your dose by 120 mg. a Magnesium supplement like magnesium chloride powder mixed into a glass or water, no more that a 1/2 teaspoon disolve completely in the glass of water to start sip the solution (stretch it out over an hour) this allows for better absorption. After 3 or 4 days you can up the dose to 1 teaspoon. Remember to sip don't drink it down fast it needs to be digested in your stomache so be patient and go slow. Be patient yoou might not feel the magnesium for a coupe of days. Gradually over the next couple of weeks you increase the amount of magnesium to 2 teaspoons. You might want to find your self a good liquid mutivitamin to add to the magnesium. Gabapentin depletes magnesium so you need to replenish your magnesium reserves.  (Feb 12, 2013 | post #116)

Crystal, is your drinking water fluoridated, because fluoride binds with magnesium and renders it useless in the body and is then filtered out through the kidneys. Depleting magnesium. I keep a running log of the supplements I take and note how I feel from day to day. Add supplements one at a time so you know what is working and what is not working listen to your body it will tell you if you are feeling better. B12 has a methylcobalamine which is the active form which seems to work better than the cyanocobalamine B12, B6 P5P is am active form of B6 which allso seems to work better. Folate (quatrefolate 5MTHF) an active form of vitamin B9. These B vitamins go to work right away no messing around with the liver having to metabolize them into the active form of the B vitamins. Eat whole food's that are high in magnesium content, nuts, leafy vegetables, processed foods lose 80% of their magnesium content in the processing of the food, alcahol, more than 3 cups of coffee are diaretic and depletes magnesium, sugar requires a lot of magnesium to metabolise. So reduce your sugar intake, avoid MSG this activates your system and makes the withdrawal that much worse, aspartame artificial sweetener is bad for you as are carbonated beverages. These are good ways to change your diet and eat healthy, cottage cheese is high in Taurine which allso seems to help. Apricots are relatively low in sugar content and high in potassium An other esential mineral and fiber, fiber in your diet is very important. Lean meat is a must, bakers yeast or nutritional yeast an other form of yeast similar to bakers yeast is naturally high in B vitamins. Allways rake Vitamin D3 with magnesium, soak up some rays and get your natural vitamin D3. These are just a couple of ideas. Hope this helps.  (Feb 6, 2013 | post #114)

Hi wanda, If you gargle or swish around in your mouth with speom salts don't swallow spit it out. Otherwise you will get diarea. Spsom salts infuses magnesium into your body through your skin and your mucous membrain that is swishing a diluted soulution around in your mouth. good luck  (Oct 27, 2012 | post #73)

Gabapentin Withdraws. How long will it last?

Hi Angela, You should be able to take them again and settle,I see this is a fairly old post. I spent 11 months trying to taper off gabapentin, the withdrawal went on for more than a month with no end in sight and so I would up my dose a bit just so I could feel normal for a while again. Which did work I did feel better but I knew I had to get off of this drug. I got no help from my doctor and so I reached out just as you have done and started reading the forums. And I found help in the form of a magnesium supplement which gave me great relief from the withdrawal I was going through. Today I am finally gabapentin free and without any withdrawal thanks to the magnesium. What I couldn't do for the last 11 months on my own by just witholding the gabapentin I was able to with the aid of magnesium in less than 2 weeks. I wish you the best and I hope you take this post as encouragement to look for an alternative to gabapentin, even the doctors were taken by surprise on this one, I think some doctors are unwilling to face the reality of the potential for a "god awful" withdrawal from this drug as there is nothing in the literature suggestive of any withdrawal from gabapentin. This is too bad because if they do this often enough they will soon be out of a job. What ever happened to their oath "to do no harm" Good luck  (Oct 11, 2012 | post #70)

Hi suzi, how much magnesium are you taking and what type ie, magnesium oxide magnesium glycinate or other magnesium supplement. For example only 4% of magnesium oxide is obsorbed into the body magnesium glycinate is better much higher obsorbtion. Check the internet, search for magnesium bioavailability. epsom salt is magnesium sulfate and you can take 1/4 teaspoon in half a glass of water and swish around in your mouth and then spit it out. Or Epsom salt bath the magnesium from the epsom salt soulution is infused into the body through your skin quickly this way and about 30% is obsorbed by the body. The body also need the sulfate as well but I think its the magnesium that helps the most. good luck hope this helps.  (Oct 11, 2012 | post #68)

Gabapentin Withdraws. How long will it last?

Hi Robert. I have been tapering off of gabapentin which I took 2400 to 3000 milligrams at bedtime for over 10 years. With the consent of my doctor. When I began my taper off gabapentin I soon found myself in full withdrawal at first I did not understand why I felt so sick (nause, lack of appetite headaches and general mailaise) then I figured out it was the gabapentin. I did not get any advise from my doctor about how to lessen the withdrawal and my withdrawal got so bad I would up my gabapentin just to feel normal for a while after going up and down servral times over the course of 8 months I decided to do research on the internet and I found a couple of references to magnesium and then I remember reading a research paper on an experiment which involved Epsom salts bath that magnesium is infused into your body through the skin. So I decided to try Epsom salt to treat my withdrawal. Magnesium glycinate over the counter supplement once a day is one of the better oral magnesium supplement it allows the body to obsorb a fair amout of the magnesium into the body, or you can soak with epsom salt bath(2 cups epsom salt in a bathtub half full of water), and or you can mix 1/4 teaspoon epsom salt in half a glass of water about 4 oz. and swish this around in your mouth for 20 seconds and spit it out and repeat servral times, Caution if you swallow too much epsom salt you will get diarea but I have found that this helps with the withdrawal from gabapentin. and I thought I was never going to feel normal again when I began to wean off of the gabapentin. After rinsing your mouth with epsom salt (or swiching around in your mouth) a couple of times you should start to feel better. 48 hours after I started swishing spcom salt solution in my mouth my withdrawal was gone. Sometimes I start to feel the withdrawal again and I swish a little epson salt as per instructions above and the withdrawal goes away. Epsom salt is relativly cheap so I use it instead of the over the counter supplement. I am now at 100 milligrams gabapentin and I am confident that I'll be completely off in about 2 or 3 weeks. Gabapentin and magnesium attach to the same chemical receptor in the brain so when taking gabapentin the magnesium isn't allowed to do its thing and when you begin your taper there isn't enough magnesium in the body to fill the chemical receptor and so the body gets phisically ill because of the magnesium defieciency. Good Luck Hope this works for you. I am not a doctor just tired of gabapentin withdrawal. .  (Oct 11, 2012 | post #67)
