We'll all be on welfare soon. Unless we can land a govt job. I'm sure they'll be needing more welfare workers.  (Dec 29, 2010 | post #1186)

Ephrata, PA

Ephrata Borough facing 2011 tax increase

Ephrata has been on a spending spree for years. Like money is a bottomless pit. For instance, the purchase of the former Sprecher's Hardware store, just to keep a flea market from moving in to ruin the downtown "ambience ", like the junk shop located in the old J C Penney building. In the pre-mall era Ephrata's down shopping district was the envy of all of the small towns in the area, the place was packed on Friday evenings. Lititz apparently had the right idea for the long run, historic buildings revamped and occupied by specialty shops. Did you know there are bus trips now bringing people to historic downtown Lititz? Lunch at the General Sutter Hotel is a highlight of the trip. Ephrata tore down the Mount Vernon Hotel, forever ruining the historic downtown, replacing it with a modern Newberry's 5 & 10, now a newspaper office. What is there now to attract shoppers and tourists with most of the stores gone? And all of the downtown home cooking eateries are now gone: Sam & Sue's, Ed's Diner, Kip's, etc. No more soda fountains, either. Just how much pizza can we eat?  (Dec 12, 2010 | post #3)

Pennsylvania Society bestows Distinguished Achievement me...

Call me the ultimate cynic, but what first comes to my mind when I remember Gov Casey is the wasted millions on his failed attempt to build auto emissions testing stations all over the state. Anyone recall how much was the settlement with the company building these stations, for breach of contract? Secondly, the governor's remarkable move to the top of the list for available organs for his dual transplant.  (Dec 12, 2010 | post #1)

public cigar smoking

Government used to run smoothly when deals were cut in cigar smoke filled rooms. That must be what's wrong with govt today, no smoke, well, other than up your azz.  (Nov 18, 2010 | post #26)
