Emotions, anticipation, and caffeine headaches, as Yom Ki...

Ah, the "Days of Awe!" Awe at finding out you have to pay hundreds of dollars for a seat in a shul to pray to G-d. Wonder at being amongst your fellow Jews who, for one day, need to seek salvation so they can go back to being their immoral selves the next day. Here's an idea. Take the money you would spend on High Holy Day seats and donate to your favorite charity. Go outside to a quiet spot and revel in the splendor of the Lord G-d who made this earth and the people on it, including yourself. Thank Him for this one day and all the days before it and accept them as precious gifts and live each new one to its fullest. Pray because it makes you feel good and not because you're afraid of what might happen if you don't. Help the poor, offer comfort to the ill, feed the hungry, bless the children and, believe me, even if G-d isn't listening to you, you'll feel a lot better. Yes, I am a Jew. I find my G-d in the flowers of the field, in the laughter of the young and the wisdom of the old, in the inky blackness of night and the bright hues of the day, in the smoothness of the babies skin and the wrinkles of the old woman's face. Where do you find yours? LShana Tovah to all  (Sep 21, 2007 | post #19)

Fed May Enter Period of Unchanged Rates

The DJIA is the sum of 30 specific stocks divided by the dow divisor which changes periodically based on the performance or activities of the stocks composing the average. While this average usually performs as a broad market indicator it is in no way a guarantee that the overall market will respond as the Dow does. Now while this may be important to some, my question is how this affects those of us who work for a living. Houses are priced beyond our reach, we cannot afford adequate health coverage and the price of food, gas and other necessities are spiraling out of control. We have no savings and our credit card debt is, per capita, higher than ever. Are the crediit card companies going to lower their rates to us, NO WAY. WIl houses become more affordable?, probably not. Is the price of oil or milk or baby food going to go down? Who is going to help the little guy? I am an American citizen, a veteran and I have worked since I was 13 years old. Both my children are college graduates struggling to make their own way in the world. I now find myself living in a foreign country because my $1,445.00 per month Social Security payment does not allow me to live in the USA. Statistics indicate that today's generation is the first that will have a lower quality of life than their parents did. I'm sure Alcoa, Disney, Microsoft, GM, AIG and all the others on the DJIA are grateful for he rate cut. Now what are you guys going to do for the ral people, huh????  (Sep 18, 2007 | post #55)

Bush Motorcade Crash Kills N.M. Officer

I agree that this isn't about GW but about a young mans life being taken for no apparent reason. I'm still confused about the country, states and local governments providing these services to the President, and other high government officials, when they are out there fund raising and not performing the business of our country. If I go to a fund raiser I can't charge my employer the cost of the trip, so how do these guys come off charging their employers t,the American people, with the costs associated with keeping their jobs? Another Catch 22 situation. Again my sympathies to the friends and families of the officer who lost his life in the performance of his duty.  (Aug 28, 2007 | post #428)

Price, sale slumps of South Florida homes continue -- Sou...

Figured you'd be from the Great State of Texas, home to our fearless leader, GW,Jr and his pappy. Guess you're speaking from first hand experience, huh? Anyway, even if I wanted to, my Social Security benefits aren't that big that I could actually afford it. And at my advanced age it would probably kill me anyway  (Aug 28, 2007 | post #167)

**** Hum, another sad day in the financial world. That should send the stock market up another 500 points. What does it all mean??? The only things that really count for most of us is that we can put some kind of roof over our heads, food on the table, and take care of those we love and are responsible for. Who cares where the market is today or tomorrow? How many of us regular people really depend on that kind of thing except as it affects the costs of food, housing and transportation. What's really important?? Our youth are dying in foreign countries and for what? So we can drop soccer balls from helicopters in Afghanistan that infuriate the population due to our failure to realize a basic cultural difference. The average American can't afford basic health care because the cost of insurance is out of reach. I had to leave the country of my birth, the country I served during the Viet Nam era, the place where my children were born and where my parents are buried because, after working my entire life, I could no longer afford to live there. Maybe we should get back to the basics. I don't have the answer and it's obvious no one else does either.  (Aug 27, 2007 | post #157)

Bad Thai Cops to Endure Kitty Shame

First, these officers WILL NOT be required to wear these armbands outside of the local police office. The officer will serve his reprimand time in the station and not on the street. Great idea, taking an officer off the street because he dropped a piece of chewing gum so he can wear a pink armband while sitting around the station-house. Have any of you ever looked at the streets of Bangkok??? Even with the street sweepers working all the time the amount of trash is amazing. Don't forget that a majority of business from selling clothing and food to fixing shoes and motor bikes is done on the street, not in tidy little shops like those lining the Main Street of your hometown. Also remember that the loss of "face" to a Thai is a major issue and not something to be trifled with. Finally there was an article in the Bangkok Post, I believe, that noted that the Hello Kitty icon is a source of great pleasure and enjoyment to millions of young people world-wide and that using it as a badge of disgrace might give these young people the wrong message. A simple Pink armband would have been sufficient with the publicity this stunt was given. In any case the Thai public will probably not even know which officers are wearing the armband and it's probably better that way.  (Aug 24, 2007 | post #7)

Broward County tax notices bring little relief for some p...

Golly Gee Mr. Greenjeans! How can we get a tax cut that actually cuts taxes? No way in Florida my friends. Won't say "I told you so" but "I told you so!" Having lived in Weston for a number of years I watched with amazement as the true masters of fiscal manipulation shat upon the residents. WE NEVER INCREASE THE MILLAGE RATE, they said, and they didn't, BUT, the contractor type of Government did require additional monies so every possible fee or assessment was increased yearly to more than make up for any increase in millage. Many of those things that were usually included in your Property Tax were assessed outside the tax burden so they could hold the millage rate, yet my taxes went up every year. SURPRISE. Living comfortably in Bangkok I have to chuckle when I see the things that are going on in South Florida. We don;t even have a Government here yet the opinion among the ex-pat community is that we are still better off than those of you still trying to survive in South Florida. Have Fun, y'all  (Aug 24, 2007 | post #10)
