So in closing, Cline, I hope you understand that it can be wise to leave an organization if common sense and wisdom is used in arriving at that decision. We all suffer the consequences of our decisions whether good or bad. When you have the knowledge to preserve life, be it yours or someone else's and fail to act on it you have made a poor decision. Remember, dead firefighters are of no use in helping someone else, you as a "former firefighter" should have learned that. You do not have to just take my word for all this. You can go to these former members and get their stories and reasons for leaving. Have you done this? You might be surprised by the "reasons " that they give you for their decisions to leave.  (Sep 11, 2014 | post #156)

This is really a sad situation. There have been many good willing, qualified firefighters that have left this department in the last few years. They were not all "quitters " as has been stated by some uninformed people here. Several had enough wisdom to know that putting oneself into the life endangering incidents that firefighters/medic al responders encounter with someone who is a liar, a backstabber or a person who shows up with the "hero/ look at me "types that show up with the wrong motives and attitudes is a good way to get hurt or killed. Sometimes the only wise choice is to walk away and live to hopefully help someone else at a later time. This can be a terrible heartbreaking decision that I know firsthand was the decision of several past members. I'm not sure what the solution is now, but the community has been at risk for a good while and some sort of resolution must come about before the community suffers great loss. The true shame is there are so many good qualified firefighters in and around the district who were on this department in the past who have been run off by just a few bad, unqualified wannabes, (some who were chiefs). The fact is at least 5 previous members of this department (maybe more) have went on to become career firefighters. These were all men who were, and still are, dedicated to helping others same as they were when they were at DGVFD. There are a limited number of people who 1. Are willing to volunteer to do anything. 2,.Are physically capable 3. Have the mental capacity to deal with traumatic situations 4.Have the time to keep their training hours and certifications up to date. 5.Are able to think/react in a timely fashion to insure their own safety and the safety of others.6. do all these aforementioned things without asking for anything in return. Again sadly, there is no way these people will ever consider rejoining this department as long as some of the same problems just keep recurring. There have been many allegations made on this forum. Many of these allegations are true, some are not. Some still need to be addressed, some are bygones that would no longer be a problem for the dept. if people would search out the truth for themselves from former members who have nothing to lose by telling you the truth about how things have been and who the troublemakers are and have been in the past. The problems have grown to a point now where only God can fix them by convicting some to confess their faults, repent and truly change their ways, and begin to prove by their actions that what the say is really what the stand for. Each one of us that believes this should be praying for resolution of this mess and soon. Thanks, Former member that knows the truth.  (Aug 31, 2014 | post #144)

You probably are unaware of things that happened at DGVFD a few years ago. This same chief was so duped by a certain troublemaker that he actually asked for resignation of a career level 2 firefighter. This same troublemaker who the BOD was highly aware of, and this same chief and some other cronies of theirs, were the reason several other highly trained and dedicated firefighters left DGVFD. Yes, they were dedicated, but not stupid enough to trust their lives to a leadership that proved themselves to be liars and backstabbers. I do know that the chief finally did see the same side of this troublemaker but after it was way too late (and I guess too hard on his pride to admit he was wrong)to win back the trust of any of the firefighters that had left. Let's see if I can explain this so you can maybe understand; If you knew that your chief would lie about you, stab you in the back, cohort with other members who had stolen from and told lies about you, even though they would be nice to you face to face; Would you go into a burning building with these people operating your truck or backing you up on a line? I should sure hope you are not that stupid no matter how dedicated you are. Things were done wrong, people in the community were paying attention and some of them were bold enough to stand up and try to get some things straightened out. Remember this when you run calls, train or perform any duty associated with your department. When you put on that fire dept. t-shirt, the public see you as a representative of the whole dept. Don't forget that old saying that "one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch." Hopefully the rotten ones can or will be removed before it's too late. Not meaning to offend anyone, just trying to keep history from repeating itself again.  (Jul 18, 2013 | post #183)

I heard today that Mr. Parsons is no longer chief and is probably gone from the department. Haven't heard if anyone else has gone also. Seems to be very quiet and hush hush even on here. Maybe the good guys are winning and the whiners are gone. Hopefully this time the ones that really needed to go are gone and the dedicated true firefighters can stay this time, instead of having to leave as they have in the past. If the news is true then congratulations to the BOD for taking a stand.  (Jul 18, 2013 | post #181)

Young man, or lady, whichever be the case, you have much to learn. If you really wish to become a certified firefighter in the years to come, there will be many hours of reading and testing which will require a lot better grammar skills than you currently have shown to have. This is not to put you down or degrade you, but to encourage you to work hard to improve these things so life will be easier and more enjoyable in the years to come. Communication skills and quick thinking are two skills that a firefighter can't survive long without. Be careful as to who you let influence you during conflicts such as these. Watch and listen closely and you will soon learn who can be trusted and who is in it for the right reasons. They are the ones who do the jobs that no one else will do, the ones who are still working when everyone else has went home, the ones who don't draw or ever seek any attention for themselves. These are the ones you should pattern yourself after, and I can tell you that they are extremely few and far between especially on this department from what I hear. It is sad that it has become this way.  (Jul 17, 2013 | post #175)

I will say that if you questioned the current board members and most of the ones that have served in the past few years especially during this chief and the one previous to him, they (BOD) would tell you they were extremely glad when their terms were and/or will be up and there is no way they would ever consider doing it again. Don't take my word for it, look them up and ask them face to face and see what they tell you. The current chief and the one right before him have been nightmares for the department. If things don't get straightened out you won't have anyone willing to serve in either capacity!  (Jul 15, 2013 | post #114)

Wow, I just went back and reread this post. I find it extremely disturbing that 2 people disagreed with this post and one called it clueless? If this was judged this way by people who are currently on the department, then they really do have serious problems!  (Jul 15, 2013 | post #113)

Wonder if there is any documentation to back this up?.....but then again I have it on good authority that there has been quite a bit of false training documentation forged by this same leadership in years past just to prevent the department from being shut down by the state. Mr. Parsons has full knowledge of this, but will no doubt choose to conveniently not recall or just blatantly lie about it. It would also be good to see an investigation into the books and past financial records for the years when former BOD member and treasurer Robert Henson was active. I've gather that reports and money info during this time was vague and not very detailed at best. I think the reason for the paid chief's position and stipends, stemmed at least in part to not being able to keep good people after the previous shake-up. The community never really had a clue as to how close this department came to getting its doors closed. Had it not been for a neighboring departments help it probably would have happened. The real shame here is this current leadership and the other one aforementioned troublemaker (in an earlier post) screwed up that relationship for a time also. Again I plead with you that can straighten this mess out and send the problem people home, or at least out of positions of authority and power, (which is probably all they are there for anyways....try it and see how long they hang around and what trouble they will try to make for the new leadership) and hopefully someone with some ethics, morals and backbone to stand up and weed out the social club and playtime and show some respect to the community and taxpayers that support and depend on them. Again, please make changes now so we all don't have to go through this mess again in a few months. You eventually are going to run out of people that will serve as board members or volunteers if you don't get rid of the ones that need to be gone. If you look at past membership, I bet you will find you've lost more good dedicated people because of just a very few bad ones that no one had the guts to dismiss and send them on their way. Most times the wounds must be cleaned and disinfected before the real healing can start. The sooner and better the cleaning, the faster and better the healing. May God's will be done in the matter.  (Jul 15, 2013 | post #112)

Does anyone know that this is not the first bunch of bad decisions during this chief's watch? A few years ago there were several very qualified firefighters who left this department when Mr. Parsons was chief. He was hooked up with another troublemaker at that time whose name has been mentioned in a previous post. Mr. Parsons did not use very wise judgment in this matter and it cost the dept. several experienced and very qualified firefighters, some who became career firefighters and officers in surrounding departments because they could not trust the leadership at DGVFD. It's very sad that one or two people with a title and greed and pride can tear down a department that at one time was looked at as one of the best in the county. It has not been so for some years now. Some of the current BOD members were serving when this all took place and one would hope that they would man up and make the changes necessary to not keep making the same bad decisions over and over, get rid of some who have proven to be problems over and over, and hopefully keep the dedicated people this time instead of running them off to other departments! I would ask that those in charge think about about this; Firefighters are taught that life safety is #1 priority. It would seem that it has not been so for some time under this leadership. Something or someone needs to be dismissed because it is very apparent that things aren't right and haven't been for several years now. Some of these people have and will continue to put their own pride, greed and personal agendas before that of life safety and the betterment of the department. My plea to community members attending Tuesday night, is that you will support the BOD in making the changes that need to be made, dismissing those guilty of inappropriate use of YOUR tax dollars, and any that are not their for the right reason, which is to provide service to the community by providing for life safety, incident stabilization and property conservation. Please remember; The dedicated, qualified and willing firefighters that may walk away this time, might very well be the one/s that could save you, your family or your property. Here's an idea that's based along the lines of King Solomon of Israels wisdom; Take away all the pay for the chief and the per call stipends that are paid to the firefighters and see who will still be willing to serve their community!!! That's how it used to be and it was a whole lot easier to tell who was dedicated and who was not. The Book plainly states "the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil." See who is willing to serve without it!!!  (Jul 15, 2013 | post #106)
