Teachers, Students Call For Governor Cuomo To Fully Fund ...

That is the point. I have paid for both public and private school and with that choice came responsibility... I paid for it. We also have public drinking water. If I choose not to drink it, I do not expect everyone else to pay for my Perrier. The issue with charter schools is that they are not better run, not performing academically better, do not automatically have better faculty or administration, can participate in the public school pension system, is held to NO reporting or academic standards, is privately owned by god knows who (political party donors), and on top of it, they get to privatize the income and pass on to the taxpayers the losses and expenses.  (Feb 8, 2015 | post #124)

I am a hardworking taxpayer too and charter and private schools do not have a lock on great teachers. Seen and paid for plenty in both.  (Feb 8, 2015 | post #104)

Teachers, Students Call For Governor Cuomo To Fully Fund ...

No one is afraid of charter schools. Problems arise when the spending level remains the same and these charters are funded by decreasing aid to active districts. I am strictly private corporate America and no fan of the Herkimer district, but stop with the teachers and unions et al as the source of all of your educational problems. Charter schools have failed to address anything and common core will accomplish even less. I run across students from other countries daily and marvel at their literacy across the board in languages, science, math, history, , etc. This kind of education can easily be found in many districts, but they are the Pittsfords, the Schenendehowas, the Brightons, the Williamsville East type school districts. The state took money from funding less wealthy districts to fund charters, benefitting far fewer students at the expense of many more. If I am going to have one funding source, fine. Have ONE public school system. Don't rob Peter to pay Paul only to see neither succeeding. Neither can with such a split commitment and forcing one of them to comply with all of the common core, teacher evaluation, and unpaid mandate experiments (and they are exactly that) and not the other only skews any results. Our public schools have served us well throughout our history. While they need to evolve with the times, the hardest part of changing has not been in the schools themselves but with the adults....adults in Congress, adults in our state legislatures, adults on our school boards, adults as taxpayers.  (Feb 5, 2015 | post #85)

Dollar Tree buys Family Dollar

As part of the purchase agreement, the Justice Department will probably require Dollar Tree to divest a certain number of stores. Judging by the non existent inventory levels in the Herkimer Dollar Tree, it is probably one of the stores selected to close.  (Jan 28, 2015 | post #3)

Interesting facts about the Merger vote

What merged school districts have you paid taxes in lately ? Look around the Canadaigua area .....lots of merged school districts and many sitting in the top100 school districts and none of them starving to death.  (Jan 27, 2015 | post #182)

Interesting facts about the Merger vote

Fight at whose expense ? A school district has a fixed cost and you can either fund it or you can't and you cannot. Unless you are writing checks to make up the difference (and you are not doing that either), there is no other way. How is the current situation elevating you out ? In terms of the now CVA district, they foresaw these issues and opted to pool their resources. Yes, it required significant change. Yes, some people do not like change. Yes, it will be a work in progress. But I give them credit. They did not stand around in denial, they understood their numbers, they understood that major changes were inevitable, and combined what they had to invest their money in programs, courses, and preschool, not into aging infrastructure they could no longer afford separately. This is not unlike the right sizing of business JC Penney or Sears/Kmart is going to have to go through shortly. All your money is going into keeping the doors open....nothing is invested in educating your kids. The school rankings are based on a 4 year average and CVA is only 1 year into it. They will need to establish a base. Herkimer is indeed been performing in the bottom 10% for the last several years. This info is online and easy to find.  (Jan 22, 2015 | post #175)

Interesting facts about the Merger vote

Lots and lots of words in the last few posts that all simply mean that you can no longer afford a school district by yourself. Your tax intake is simply not enough. It is okay, you are not alone and many of the top districts in the state were once in similar positions. They made changes and grew from there. Apologize for the reality check, but employee pay and benefit packages, building costs, maintenance, transportation, et al are just a few of the minimum fixed costs that are part and parcel of running a school district. Given that none of the above expenses are extraordinary or out of line, we are now forced to confront the significant changes the adults have been avoiding. We are simply going to have to merge or annex in some form in order to properly educate our kids. What is wrong with that ? Your identity is in being one of the bottom 10% performing schools in upstate New York. What better time to change ? There is no point in the "not going to happen" conversation about teachers and administrators forsaking their pensions and health care to keep your school going maybe another year or 2 . The constant contraction conversation goes nowhere because it does not work mathematically either. You sure want to get paid and school personnel are no different. At some point, we have to speak about how we grow and the ONLY way that happens is if we all get together as a valley, pool our resources, imagine the best of what the US has to offer for our kids, and execute it.  (Jan 22, 2015 | post #173)

Interesting facts about the Merger vote

Mohawk was fully informed of the inevitable financial demise of the Mohawk district when they voted for or against the merger. They made the tough call and I wish them well. They, at least, have a future . You...........not so much. That Mohawk school may be needed to house former Herkimer students.  (Dec 28, 2014 | post #91)

An what you have now is so much better ? A poor performing school in the beginning stages of bankruptcy is better than dealing as adults with the reality that your tax incomes are no longer going to be able to support a lone school district ? This is not complicated math....it is addition and subtraction. You need X to fund a school and you are only bringing in Y. This started years back and will only continue. You just use the conspiracy saga to cover up the cold, hard truth about the numbers.  (Dec 28, 2014 | post #84)

Herkimer to be annexed in 3 years?

Herkimer to be annexed in 3 years?

First, the NO votes won, by less than 200 votes......not a landslide by any measure. Second, the truth is never condescending. You can say things are "fine" all you want, but they are now measured against other school districts, many in the same position with the same economic situations, and you still perform in the bottom 10%. The poster just pointed out that all of the information is online IF you are willing to read it. It is not pretty and less so if you had kids attend other school districts. I have never understood the unwillingness to effectively address the academic issues. I am not a CVA person, but they voted for a change, they have a plan to address their future, and I wish them well. Herkimer, on the other hand, is still in denial and these threads point to people who are suddenly amazed the school has no money and they think their financial issues began somewhere in the fall. Really ?? I do give credit to the people who tried to keep the school running as normally as possible for as long as they could. Tough position to be in. There only ever was 2 ways out of your long term financial situation......mer ge or pay your way out. It took a year and a half to get here, but it was inevitable. Now the bills are due and it is man up time.  (Nov 30, 2014 | post #48)
