Dentist in Costa Rica

Just got back from a week at The Cavallini Clinic in Costa Rica. This clinic stands by it's guaranty. I first went for 2 extractions and 2 implants in 7/2013. It was a great experience; but both implants failed within 2 weeks. I email Dr. Marco on the weekend it happened and he got immediately back with me and personally phoned me to get me thru the situation. He told me he would replace the implants and future crowns at no cost. I returned in Nov. 2013 and both implants were replaced. He indicated I had slight infection the first time, which he felt he had cleaned out...but this could have caused the failure. No charges; but I did buy the travel insurance that time. A few weeks after this visit I took a fall and landed on a large pet cage which hit on my upper arm and just under my right jaw and one of the implants. It failed the next day. I just returned from Costa Rica and Dr. Marco removed one implant because it had shifted and didn't like how it looked. He replaced with a new implant. He said I had lost bone between the 2 teeth in front of the lost implant. The next day I saw his Dad Dr. Munoz Cavallini, who told me he would try to save the 2 molars with the bone loss. He did something I have never heard of before. He cut the molar in half leaving just one root and did a bone graft. Then he replaced the implant that had failed just behind this. He wants me to heal for 4 to 6 months. I'm jut very scared that I might be one of those patients that rejects implants. I pray this all work this time! Not only did I not get charged for any of this work; but they reimbursed all of my airfare and lodging, because I had purchased the travel insurance. I had a good friend with me the last two visits. She had 6 molars extracted and 6 implants the first visit and just got her permanents this trip and could not be happier. She was so scared of the dentist she had let her teeth go. The first visit she said she could not even get in the chair...it must have taken her 10 minutes to finally sit down. She could not believe she never had any pain. The Clinic was extremely busy and the waiting was longer this time. We stayed at The Christina this time because Casa Marco was booked. The Christina was very nice...every room is an apartment with a kitchen and living room. They also have a good breakfast buffet set up by the pool. We actually had a little extra time this trip to do the great rainforest tram tour. Actually got to meet a couple of people who post on the forum. Great to meet Euthie and DCDan. Hi Costa Rica Dental Lovers! Hope everyone had a very good Thanksgiving. It's been a long time since I last posted. You may not remember my story. I'm the one whose two implants failed within 10 days. Well I arrived in CR on Sunday and had my first appointment with Dr. Marco at the Cavallini Clinc on Monday. Dr. Marco was great during my ordeal. He kept in touch with me by email and phone and kept me calm and promised he would take care of everything once I healed and there would be no charge for my implant replacements and crowns. The first day he replaced the upper left and said he found a tiny piece of bone which would have caused the failure. The next day he replaced the lower right. He said the bone was very strong and I should be fine. As usual there was no pain. I stayed at the Casa Marco and as before they were all so wonderful. A friend of mine, needing a lot more work than I, traveled with me this time. She has always been extremely afraid of dentists and never would go the dentist. I will try to convince her to tell her story. She had 6 molars extracted. She was thrilled and could not believe she had no pain. By the way, the Clinic was extremely busy...standing room only. We thought the week of Thanksgiving would be a good time to go to CR; but I think they were busier than usual. Thank goodness we were staying at the inn. Wait times were great. There were patients from all over the world. I do believe Southwest Florida had the most in attendants. You must go to Le Monastere Restaurant. It is an old Monastery they restored. On Friday nights Casa Marco offers a tour there and several of us were taken by van. It is located on top of a mountain with the most incredible view of the city lights. The dining room is all glass windows so you have almost a 360 degree view. The food was very good too. The food at Machu Picchu Restaurant is also excellent. Due back in 5 to 6 months. Hi Y'all! Has anyone had an implant fall out within 2 weeks? Well I just did! I was having dinner with friends Saturday night and felt something foreign in my mouth. To my surprise it was an implant. I'm still in shock. I immediately sent Dr. Marco an email and he quickly got back to me that very evening. He really thought it could be the healing cap and not the implant. He asked me to send him a pic...which I did. Again he answered quickly. Indeed it was an implant and he said he was "trying to find an explanation for this with extreme guilt and disappointment at himself". He said they stood behind all their work and would replace the implant and crown at no extra cost to me. Thank goodness for that; but I'm really scared of this happening again. I cannot believe how tiny this implant is. I really don't see how it could stay in or how it can support a crown. By the way, I am not a smoker or a drinker. I actually had two implants put in on the 7/30..#31 & #19. I have a feeling the other may have come out too, because I don't see it anymore. But, it seems I would have felt it. Unless I swallowed the darn thing. Hope someone has something good to say.  (Aug 18, 2013 | post #4316)

Hi Guys! On 7/30 I had 2 extractions and 2 implants #31 and #14. I had no pain and very little swelling after the surgery. But, I do still have some irritation and eating is still troublesome. Can anyone tell me how long this lasts?  (Aug 10, 2013 | post #4263)

Hi To All! Thursday was my last appointment with Dr. Marco (Son) for this trip. Actually, I saw one of the other doctors, I believe his name was Dr. Griata. He simply examined my surgery site and said it looked great. He then gave me a few instructions regarding hygiene while healing and looking for any signs of infections. I will be back in 3 months for my permanent crowns and one more tooth to crown. I could not be happier with my experience at the Cavallini Clinic! The clinic was cleaner than some I've been to in the States. Today, Friday is a holiday and the clinic is closed. Luckily they were able to finish what had to be done in 4 days instead of 5. I would suggest you check with any dental clinic you choose to see if there is a holiday during the time you plan to visit. I actually checked on the internet for Costa Rica Holidays and it showed none. This is a Saints Holiday and everything closes. I brought along with me soups that could be heated in a micro (Healthy Choice) and also Hormel (soft) meals to microwave. These were perfect after surgery. Yesterday, I had dinner delivered from Maria Bonita Restaurant and was one of the best Mexicana food I've had. I have met a lot of interesting and nice people from all over: 3 from Florida, Colorado, California, Texas etc. Many of these have been here 2 or 3 times and are all extremely happy with the Cavallini Clinic. By the way, there were many Costa Ricans also...more than foreigners. I only had to wait a long time once. For those of you who may fear going to a foreign country for dental work, I can only say: I was one of you and I am so glad I decided to come. There is nothing to fear. I got a lot of my info from this forum. Thank you all!  (Aug 2, 2013 | post #4197)

Day 2: Two molars extracted and two implants in place. No pain, just a little light headed after the sedation. No swelling....amazin g. I was able to have breakfast this morning with no problem. Today my appointment is not until 2 PM. I will just take it easy at the hotel today because it is very grey outside, windy and raining on and off. Wouldn't you know, Friday is a National holiday here, so no office hours. I hope Dr. Marco can get finished in 4 days. He originally had said he would need 5 working days, but never mentioned the holiday on Friday. I have a flight out on Saturday. Interesting!  (Jul 31, 2013 | post #4158)

Arrived yesterday in San Jose safe and sound but exhausted. The driver was waiting for me at the airport. A nice girl was standing by baggage claim with my name on a card and gave me a sticker to where so Carlos could find me. The room at Casa Marco is very simple, but nice...it has a little fridge and the bed is comfortable. When I arrived in went down to the clinic to check in and they took we immediately for X-rays and impressions. I went back to my room and had a great nap. Young Dr. Marco went over my dental plan and I was done. This was about 7 pm...I cannot believe how hard these people work. It's like a colony of ants; they are always moving. Young Dr. Marco is extremely friendly and pleasant. Well today I will have 2 extractions and I'm very nervous...Dr. Marco insists on me have sedation because of my high PB. Hopefully this is the right thing. I will post again tomorrow.  (Jul 30, 2013 | post #4155)

Lura, Great advise. I probably won't need as much work done; but I will have two molars extracted and replaced with implants plus some other minor work done. I am a little worried about the extractions. Plan on posting while I'm there.  (Jul 16, 2013 | post #4053)

Lura, thank you for your report. I will be arriving at Casa Marco 7/29 for my first appointment. How far from the clinic is the pharmacy? I'm assuming Oxa-forte is for pain...not familiar with it. Again, thank you for your info. You make me feel better about traveling alone.  (Jul 16, 2013 | post #4051)
